At 50 years old he was still winning races at the highest level. Imagine any other sport if a guy who was 50 years old winning something. Football? Hockey? Baseball? Nobody at that age still performs at that high if a level. Mark is a LEGEND!

2009 was my first year watching NASCAR, I had a lot of good memories watching Mark Martin win races. He's one of the reasons why I got hooked to NASCAR. He should of won the title that year, at least in my eyes.

Most will say 98 was his best year (he would agree) I say it's 09 cause of the early struggles and then his sheer dominance afterwards... Sure miss watching that 5'4 120 pound man wheel around the track

I was at Darlington for that night. Absolutely loved watching Mark win that race. I don't think I've ever seen and heard a crowd cheering that loud before.

Mark was a brilliant driver and a larger than life personality in my eyes. He was my favorite driver of the 90's and was someone I looked up to.

I sure do miss me some Mark Martin.. Legend has it, Mark was actually assembled on the same factory grounds as Chuck Norris..

He could've scored at least one more win in the 55 if he didn't have that accident while leading, where he spun onto pit road and and hit an opening awkwardly. Lap traffic was the cause of that. Although Kahne was catching him, and also was caught up in that wreck, so he probably wouldn't have won. Happened at Michigan, I think.

Man that Michigan race is such a classic race I remember watching it the roll coster of feelings with 3 lead changes on the last lap

Growing up my two favorite drivers were always Mark Martin and Bill Elliott. Glad I got to see Elliott win a championship when I was a kid. Being a Mark Martin fan was kind of hard in a way. There seemed to be heartbreak every other season.

Oddly, 2009 stood out as a season that the #5 team didn't perform a step behind the other HMS teams. From 1997 on, it seemed that the #5 was a level behind Jeff Gordon or Jimmie Johnson in performance. Kyle Busch drove it and only managed 1 to 2 win seasons, then Kyle went to Gibbs and won 8 races his first year there. Casey Mears performed better when he drove the supposedly cursed #25 car than he did in the #5. Then Kasey Kahne took over after Mark left and was outrun by Dale Jr at times.

A huge loss for nascar when Mark Martin retired. He is a class act! One of the greatest drivers ever.
