My ancient (30+) thoroughbred is blind in her right eye and losing sight in her left. A former polo pony, I rescued her from a kill buyer's feed lot. Amazingly, she is still sound, and we ride the trails together a few times a week and do the round pen nearly every day, where I work with a dressage and a lunge whip, my voice, a clicker, and a bag of treats to continue to prepare her for when she loses all sight. I spend a lot of time getting her used to measuring my proximity by the sound and pitch of my voice, get used to being touched and tapped and felt all over with hands, cords lain over her back, saddle, bridle, everything, getting her used to coming to a halt and standing when I call out.... So I am something she can recognize when it goes dark. It's pretty dark from where I'm standing already, my sweet Kai. We'll see where the time ahead takes us both.

My boy is blind in his right eye. And is the most amazing horse i have ever owned. I believe He will walk though fire for me if i asked it of him. Mine did the same in that when i first got him he would tilt his head to see me better but once we developed a bond he stopped. I just treat him like other horses but always be aware of his ability to know where you are. I still forget some times and pat his blind side without letting him know i am there. Wr both get a fright then thats it. He follows me around every where but always respects my space. When riddrn if he is unsure he stops rather than bolts or spooks. If you let him look at things he is fine. In fact he is the safest horse we own. Basically it is all about trust. Once you have the trust and bond the rest just slips into place. And the reward is a horse so in tune with you it is almost scary.

I have 2 horses- (one completely blind) and one who was born blind in her right eye. She lunges and rides just like any other horse with 2 eyes we just had to have more patience getting her to work on her bad side but with a little patience she now does it well. We can even free lunge her with a herd.

My Appaloosa Keely has become almost completely blind due to UVITIS 😢 I love her so much she is an Angel in her pen but as you remove her from her pen she starts getting nervous and when you go to put her on the walker she starts tripping out about everything around her and I try to keep a horse in front of her for guidance and I talk to her if you stop the walker like to add a horse or take off a horse she starts spinning around and she can be dangerous because she is huge and if I smack her chest she seems to get a grip long enough for me to get her rope undone but it can be scary and once she is released from the walker and back in my control she calms down should I leave her off the walker? And just walk her by hand? I hate to let her go she was once a barrel racer she’s 20 years old and I just love her but I want a horse that can see I am a novice and I don’t know if I have the ability to train a horse that’s almost blind!

Hey Donna, sorry to hear about the uveitis, it can certainly be a tough deal. I would absolutely stop putting her in the walker. If she needs that type if exercise I would spend the time walking her in hand. Many may disagree and that is fine, however in my experience this is a quality of life situation. If the environment, management and human experience is at a level the horse can continue to live a good quality of life that is great. However not every situation is just that and oftentimes letting that horse move on to the next life can ensure they leave this earth on a good day as opposed to an accident taking place and the horse having to be put down due to an injury. Only you will be able to make that decision and either way it’s never an easy one. Appreciate you watching our videos and we’re always here to help & support. God Bless.

My first blind horse(my second horse) was the sire of my heart horse. He was an ex ranch horse then dressage horse . He ended up blind and then was a trail horse. I trained him to drive .

I have a completely blind morgan who seems very smart and has clearly had some training at some point. I believe she use to be ridden but don't know if she's been ridden since going blind, ( or anything about her past) because I rescued her in August. What would be the best way to go about seeing if she'd accept the saddle and if so - also a rider?

Start working with her from the very beginning of the colt start process like she has never had those experiences. Make sure she’s prepared. If she has in the past she may progress rapidly. If she hasn’t, then you’ll find out without putting yourself, the horse or anyone else in a dangerous situation.

My 22 year old gelding is now totally blind now (moon blindness). He was ridden for years and years, but now that he can’t see, he has a tendency to stop and not want to move. I feel like this is fear or lack of confidence. But I’m not sure how to help him and convince him to keep going. When this happens, he won’t respond to leg cues to move forward. Sometimes I can get another rider to lead us but I want him to feel comfortable and confident under saddle if possible. Any advice?

Last yr rode him 8-10 times with someone hand walking him or on lungeline, I need tips on desensitizing him so he doesn't spook and bolt. He seems to lack confidence and scared of other horses moving around him and things moving or touching him on blind side. I've been working on rubbing him with a training flag. Need ideas on despairing him so I can show him. I have to try to get him ready for walk trot class for fair
