Steam Radiator Vent

So what is the correct location for a steam radiator vent? The correct answer would be opposite the supply valve about midway down from the top. Steam is lighter than air, so when it enters your radiator it heads for the top.
If it's located at the top of the radiator there is a good chance it may shut before the entire radiator has a chance to heat resulting in a partially heated radiator. Don't get me wrong, there are hundreds of steam radiator vents located at the top of the radiators.
Not the ideal location but nevertheless ended up at the top. Let's jump down to the bench and check out the options and if you haven't seen this video "Steam Radiator Not Working" -amzn.to/33gLlek, I highly recommend you check it out!
Happy Plumbing!

Good to see another New Yorker here! I had my handy man install a new radiator for me from the fin style, he had the valve up top and it was a cheap mist o made self adjustment one. The radiator had cold spots so, I plugged the top and moved it to the middle/bottom. Next step is getting a better quality vent, a Gordon or vent rite adjustable 1

Happy New Year Bob! Any harm in leaving the original air valve at the top instead of plugging it? Also, a video suggestion is to show us how to tap the threads for the new air valve.

Love your videoed…great content. Question-Does Dan Holohan agree with placing the valve lower rather than higher for a one pipe steam system? I know you consider him the “master” of steam so you must know his opinion. Just curious…thanks Bob.

Hi Bob, your videos are very informative and helped my fix the service valve on my radiator, can you please tell me what the best air valve to buy to use on my top floor (3rd) steam radiator would be? I currently have the Maid of the Mist brand but some of them don't seem to be working very well and they are only about a year old.
@BobsPlumbingVideos
@BobsPlumbingVideos 2 жыл бұрын
Maid-O-Mist valves are imported knock off's of the Gorton valve. I like a Gorton "C" or "D" on upper floors further away from the boiler. Valves should be sized also in relation the the size of the radiator, big fav of the reliable Hoffman #40 which is a bullet proof valve in my opinion.

You're going to have to drill it out, maybe this will help...kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r5l5ZLFjs7rVoXk.html. Drill dead center of the flat head plug with a small (1/8" bit) increase the size accordingly.

Bob thanks for your videos! I have a question for you with my steam system. Several of my radiators are banging ( like someone is hitting them with a baseball bat). I have tilted the radiators to ensure water flows toward valve. I have new vents installed and the valves are always kept wide open. What else can be the problem?

Hi Bob, thank you for the video. I just want to ask you where did you got the vest you had on you. I have a Weil McLain Steam boiler. The house is getting heated up but the pressure gauge does not affect any. I cleaned the pigtail. Still nothing. What you think? Thank you.

Vest was from Duluth Trading Corp many years ago. Not sure they still make that one. Check them here..www.duluthtrading.com/men/outerwear/vests/. Is your stream gauge broken? May just need to replace it? If the house is heating up, may just be a bad gauge

The last radiator on the first floor main, spits steam and water out of the air vent. The tilt is fine. I can hear the water gurgle and surge and finally spit out the vent. New main air vent. The radiator gets hot. I catch the water in a can every day. 1/8th of a cup daily.

@@BobsPlumbingVideos This problem started last season when I replaced some radiator air valves that were "hissing" air/steam all the time. I was adding too much water twice a week. One plumber tried to force the pipes in the basement down for a better drain, but nothing has helped. Thanks for the reply.

Not easy, but I most likely would drill a series of hole around the square hex until I could knock it out. Then make two or three cuts from the inside up to the radiator without hitting the female threads,. Then take a small cold chisel and knock the pieces out. You could try heat ing the plug with a torch and try to unscrew it with an 18" / 24" wrench, but thats a gamble. Good Luck!

Hey Bob, your videos are helpful. I generally have 1/8 fitted straight air vents on the 1st and 2nd floors. However there is one 3/4" straight valve in the basement that keeps blowing. Ive replaced it 3 times within 6 months. I use a Weil McLean SGO-4 boiler. The system always stops at 5psi under normal operation, so I don't understand why I'm replacing air vents so frequently to get rid of the hissing noises everywhere. Also, the banging noises go off every morning around 4 am is a major annoyance. All of the radiators are pitched. Any ideas?

Is it common to have two valves in one radiator? One of my steam radiators, located in the second floor bathroom, has two valves. I wanted to swap out the valves and was wondering if I need to plug one or was it by design to have two valves?
