In this American standard flush valve replacement video, I show you how to remove and replace a vintage American standard actuating unit. Originally made from heavy brass construction, the modern replacements are constructed of plastic.
My recommendation was to replace the entire toilet but there were some obstacles in the way and the customer stated a possible bathroom renovation in spring 2022. I located a replacement actuating unit and proceeded with yet another American standard flush valve replacement. Enjoy the video!
Regards & Happy Plumbing!

You saved me a ton of money..I never fixed a toilet until I saw how you replaced the gasket between the tank and the bowl. I was able to replace all 3 ...One gave me a problem...A bolt was too rusty to remove with a philips...So I had to buy a small hand saw and cut the bolt between the bowl and tank...Took me 30 mins just to cut threw the bolt.

Outstanding video presentation. Very detailed with clear video. I appreciate your showing the actual flush operation. I have a similar unit But American Standard did not send installation instructions showing the proper positioning of the valve in the toilet. I will definitely try "Blue Block". I also coat the gasket with a light application of silicon grease to help preserve longevity.

That was an awesome video Bob! That blue sealant looked alot like leaklock! I have had great success with that ! Had a similar issue with a 1957 Kohler toilet ! The seal between the tank and bowl was leaking! I couldn't replace the toilet as you can not buy a blue toilet today that would match the tile in the bathroom! Why are all of them white today Bob? Found I could get a Kohler in black if I ordered it!

Hi Bob! Thank you for this, this is very helpful. Can you provide the link to the Blue Block when you get a chance? I have a leak even though I replaced the actuator with flapper and flush valve and black seal to the porcelaine but still leaking through the bowl. So the tank is never getting filled as water runs out through the bowl as it fills up. So the fill valve never stops running....

Thanks for posting. Do you have a link for the fill valve and the flush handle for this vintage toilet? The handle on the toilet I’m in front of has the handle staying down when it is flushed so the flapper never drops. You have to pull it back up every time and visitors obviously don’t know to do this.

Would you recommend a flushometer based toilet or a tank based one for home use? My apartment building currently uses flushometer toilets but some tenants have been remodeling and opting for tanks instead. Just wondering what you think?

Many apartments in my area are equipped with flushometers, just the way they were built back then. I personally like a tank as it doesn't feel like a public restroom. Check that the refill tube is above the overflow. If it's shoved down inside the porcelain overflow, it's going to siphon water back into the bowl.

Hi, I'm pretty sure the gasket is no good on mine. I can't get the screws out of the brass seat....any suggestions? I'm scared to break the porcelain! Thanks Kate

If you can dry it out COMPLETELY you can try to apply some Flex-seal around the perimeter of the flush valve. Read the instructions carefully! amzn.to/3ohkXLx I would brush it on and allow it to dry at minimum 24 / 48 hours.

My American Standard one piece was filling every 15 minutes so I replaced this flush valve but I still have a slow leak and it’s filling every 1 hour and 45 minutes. I can see a very slow drip into the bowl. My new flush valve has the brass seat rather than plastic seat. Should I try the Blue Block? It looks like you put Blue Block in two places: 1) between the plastic seat and gasket and 2) between the gasket and the porcelain essentially sandwiching the gasket in Blue Block. Is that correct?
@BobsPlumbingVideos
@BobsPlumbingVideos 2 жыл бұрын
That is correct! It's just good practice I.M.H.O. to prevent unwanted callbacks. An option would be to use a very thin ring of plumbers putty between the gasket and the bowl, blue block between the gasket and the flush valve.
@jasonbkau
@jasonbkau 2 жыл бұрын

My toilet continues to leak every 1 to 2 minutes even with new valve parts installed and a brand new gasket with the flush valve. The tank is extremely clean but that doesn’t seem to be the problem. The valve kit I installed is the original American Standard part with all metal pieces and not all plastic like todays. I am bewildered by this because it eliminates the toilet off our bedroom and is pink in color. I don’t want to change to an all white toilet since it would not match the rest of the bathroom. The toilet is about 52 years old and a similar toilet in a blue bathroom has no problems. I did notice that the gasket under the brass piece is bigger extending out side the gasket all around. This is not true of the new gasket. Please help me with any suggestions you might have. Thanks, Norm Goodln

My only thoughts are to add the blue block compound between the bottom of the flush valve and rubber gasket as well as between the gasket and tank surface as I did in the video. Very sparingly, a very light coat is all that's required. Other than that, are you sure there are no visible cracks? After you go thru the process, flush it put some foos coloring in the tank and cross your finger the color does not show in the bowl.
