Borderline Personality Disorder vs Bipolar Disorder - How to tell the difference

Nearly two-thirds of individuals with bipolar disorder have been misdiagnosed at some point in their lives, and they visit nearly four physicians on average before receiving a definitive bipolar diagnosis. Perhaps the most troubling feature is the length of time it takes for a person to receive a bipolar diagnosis and appropriate treatment. It takes an average of 10 years from the time a person experiences their first bipolar mood episode until they receive bipolar disorder treatment. This treatment gap is the result of widespread misunderstandings about bipolar disorder and how it shows in episodes, as well as a general aversion to discussing a persistent psychological disorder, especially when symptoms are present in a young person.

I have BPD, my therapist considered the possibility of Bipolar disorder. As someone with BPD, the biggest distinction for me is my mood swings are not episodic, but more frequent and fluctuate a wider range of emotions. I’ve literally gone from being inconsolably angry to being hyperactive and bouncy within the span of 15 minutes Edit: And definitely the fact that my mood swings are triggered by others 😭💀

Mushrooms are very medicinal. This is why anybody familiar with psilocybin and any other kind of fungi will tell you, "They are alive." They have a very ancient wisdom. To my experience, all mushrooms have always said, "Pay attention to your life. How you think, how you feel, and what will you do with the information that you always knew, but now are seeing in this point of view." This is why mushrooms are so respected in tribal cultures. This mental health treatment works for me too. Half micro doses do the trick for me. At least a few days at a time with lengthy time in between. Thank you for sharing this point!

My new psychiatrist diagnosed me with borderline personality and I was very relieved to hear a name for what I feel. I am hypersensitive and have always had extremely intense emotions more than anyone I know. I freak out really bad over anything that goes wrong. Like the smallest thing causes me to have an emotional breakdown. I told my counselor and good friend what I was diagnosed with and they both say there is no way you have that. But my mom and boyfriend think I am borderline. I truly think I do bc I have almost all the things that go along with borderline. It really pisses me off that some people tell me I have it and others say I don't. so now I'm confused and don't know who is right and what is wrong with me.
@DaimonTrilogy

Similar experience with the relieve! But dont put so much pressure on yourself if you have it or not. The fact is, that you have symptoms of it and this diagnostic is more important for the person treating you. If you want/need I can give you tips on how to deal with things. I have visited some therapist, but without luck. And being pretty much geologically isolated from therapists didnt help much either. Therefore I needed to find some solutions myself on how to handle paranoia, episodes of anger, fear of loss, extreme mental rollercoasters and delusions. There are ways to gain control of your situations, not always, but most of the time. I have also managed to help my wife with her severe emotional distresses with the knowledge I have attained about this.

Get yourself a DBT workbook and look up the issues you feel you are dealing with like anxiety and learn steps in how to manage and overcome. Honestly with any dis-ease, a Dr or a pill will not make it fully go away, you need to do the self work to at least manage if not overcome the dis-ease. You can do this!!!

I used to work in research for bipolar d/o in a NYC hospital 20 years ago. One of my jobs was to train psychiatrists both attending and residential on how to identify symptoms. I would test them by having them watch a clinical interview and they would have to give a diagnosis. Most of them failed at first and I would have to educate them on what they missed: If a person didn't sleep all night and is manic, they would say they didn't feel they needed sleep and would not feel sleep deprived. - To qualify as manic, they also would have to do something that put themselves at risk either financially, legally or sexually without caring about the consequences - Most doctors got the time duration wrong for mania. It does not last for a few hours. It goes for days, sometimes weeks. This determines whether a person has BP 1 or 2. If a person hears voices, this is psychosis and they are automatically BP 1 regardless of the duration of mania. Another symptom not mentioned in the video is rapid speech as well as grandiosity which can escalate into delusions (ie, convinced they're Jesus).

@@TSquare7741 It's not. Rapid cycling is like having your mood go up (slightly manic) and down (depressed) like a yo-yo or being on an elevator going up & down. Bpd is a diagnosis created to rationalize behavior when no one knew that Trauma from childhood could have long-term effects

I can relate to both and it’s really difficult to manage even with medication, therapy and a lot of self help and work. In the beginning, I couldn’t tell the difference, there’s a lot of different emotions, impulses and I really wanted to control my them. But the more I understand both bipolar and BPD and the more I’m aware of my emotions, the easier it became, especially if I know my triggers and traumas. My ex had bipolar disorder and it was very toxic yet I was blind, manipulated and afraid. I remember if I leave him, he will share my intimate photos to the public and my family, it took many years to fight the fear. After I left him, he did share my intimate photos to the public. After he did that and my anxiety disorder calmed down, I told myself "So what? People will forget and i need to remember that this is my consequences for not listening and sharing my intimate photos. I remember he even told me that the police won't do anything and just laugh it off, when I told my mom she asked her friend who works for the police what can we do?( she lived in another city and it was 4am) She told us to report to police and we did that, my mom helped and supported me the whole way and I'm thankful for that. My close friend that I've known since 2010 also comforted me and shockingly was the first person to warn me about my ex. Btw I was with my ex from 2016- 2022. I still have that "mix my ex" feeling but I remind myself of what will happen if I go back and I worked up the bravery to leave him. Week after I broke up, I found out he was cheating on me with 7 other girls! I'm grateful I worked up the courage to leave my ex. Now I am able to be myself (my ex was controlive that I couldn't even do simple make up) months later my close friend asked me out, he gets along with my family and friends, he's bit shy but my friends and family trust him. He's been having a crush on me for a while but didn't have the courage to ask me out. I'm grateful I'm with him that I can be myself and do the things I like, we even have many similarities and work great as a team in video games❤ Conclusion: if you're going to be with someone that's bipolar try to get them to know first and very well, not all bipolar people are like My ex. He had the Manic Bipolar

I’m diagnosed with both 🥲 with time I’ve been able to often recognize and distinguish them from each other though: personally, my bpd is more fiery, intense, agitated, chaotic, whilst bipolar swings in hypomania is happy euphoric chaotic and restless, and depression is more numbness and despair How long these last is a HUGE teller; my bdp swings last in terms of minutes to hours, but bipolar is entire days, weeks, months Oh and ofc, the BPD i feel is more an everyday thing whereas bipolar it hits during the swings. I know its BPD because the emotions felt are way more intense and impactful than « normal » people’s Hope this can be helpful to someone

I got diagnosed with Bipolar disorder a few months ago. I was hospitalized and in an outpatient program and doctors still couldn't figure what was wrong with me. My best friend said when I tried to run away from home and try to elope with a boy I met in the hospital she said I think you were having a manic episode. I told my doctor and was put on lamotrigine and turns out she was right on the money.

I’ve been diagnosed with BPD for 6 years. I got a new therapist last year and she thinks I have bipolar 2. I also have MDD. She wants me to get re-evaluated. My moods are very unstable ie crying one minute, to angry and extremely irritable, to being okay. Back and forth multiple times in a day sometimes. My biggest symptoms are the chronic emptiness, crying a lot, and not having a stable sense of self or knowing my purpose. I also have a bad pretty bad case of derealization/depersonalization. It’s been a struggle and feel very alone. I’ve also felt confused since I’m unsure what is really wrong with me

I feel that I have both of these. I randomly felt depressed for about a week, maybe more. This made me feel like killing myself, but i try my best to control it when this happens. After that ended, I helped my dad with his work. I was yelled at (he is stressed out about his work because there is a lot to do; he has no employees), which made me hate myself and feel useless. This happened one or two weeks ago as I turned 20 years old. Perfect present. The aftershock of these events is still ongoing, but they are dying down.

Bipolar disorder is more rooted in the biology of the nervous system and more responsive to medication. Borderline strongly involves the psychological level of the mind - the way meaning is generated - in addition to the biology of the brain and nervous system. A more biological condition like bipolar lacks these deeply rooted psychological aspects or ways of seeing the world and perceiving the self and others. Mood swings of bipolar disorder are more random and less related to events than those of borderline. Those with bipolar might have a hair-trigger kind of response during an episode, whereas the borderline person has a hair-trigger response all of the time.

No need to be scared! Things can actually turn fine in the end! There are ways (atleast I know for BPD) to cope with the symptom and get a more relaxed and sustainable life. The more you work with it, the more you can get knowledgeable about it and can gain more or less control of situations.

This is my Bipolar video for today. Remember in on of my previous video I mentioned I was also diagnosed with BPD ant the same time I was diagnosed Bipolar 1.. I also said that this was going to be another video. When I was diagnosed I was 302 involuntary hospitalization in the mental hospital. My stay there was 10 days sedated right out of the gate. After the 10 which is all the insurances cover then they kick you out of the hospital. Well, the Dr put me and my terrified family in the same room with me ask asked them if I was ready to come home. Well, they sent me home. Hurt the family dynamic So what happened. I went back to the hospital on my to for treatment of extreme anxiety. I worked so hard to achieve years prior. Mind you I never seen the psychiatrist face to face, and they put me on the youth floor. With teenagers or upper twenties. I was told he was evaluating my behaviors from afar. What happened to the assessment at least that I’m aware of. !!! I never had one. How’d they come up with these diagnoses???? Mind you in 2008 I sought out the help of a psychologist named Wendy. for my anxiety. When I first started going manic, she was called but no one took her or her notes into consideration. Why did I even bother going there for almost a year. I still and have used her cognitive behavior techniques for thee last 15 years. That’s why I was against any kind of therapy. In the 15 years I went to therapy a few times. But they didn’t understand me. Now with educating myself on BPD all the pieces fit. I have nothing to hide. If the drs and hospitals and therapist kept good notes this should be in my medical records that how I found out I was diagnosed BPD no one told me!!!On a good note I’m stable for 3 years this May. I worked hard to achieve this. I’m in therapy again. Bottom line if someone anyone would have treated the BPD with therapy and anxiety med I wouldn’t have been on this 15 year bipolar Rollercoaster. Thank you for letting me vent…… Much love sent!!

The P's, S's, T's were quite loud and some of the other parts of the words were soft which made it challenging to concentrate. I am bi polar and struggle with sensory problems, my biggest one is sounds. I feel this suggestion would make it easier to listen and concentrate on the content :) hope this helps!

I currently only know a lot about bpd but I am trying to learn so if anyone else has anything similar between the two please feel free to let me know! It’s very much appreciated
