Just wanted to say how helpful these videos have been. These are by far the best tutorial vids for I’ve found for td5 land rovers. I’ve basically had exactly the same problem with mine, and watching these videos has made the whole process a lot faster and less intimidating. On a fairly tight budget, so I got a reconditioned head from auto tech cylinder heads in the UK. £732 for the head and all the gaskets, washers, dowels etc. Time will tell how well it holds up VS an amc one, but he does guarantee them for a year, and says he’s never had one back. Thought I’d mention for a budget option against the AMC. Thanks again. I owe you a few pints if you ever find yourself in South west England.

Thank you so much for those kind words! I'm really glad even to help one person and I've noticed that videos like this are lacking from KZfaq or like 10 years old and filmed with a potato, so that's why I wanted to fill this gap. It seems very intimidating reading the forums so I'm glad it helps watching these first! Good job on the budget option! We don't have that possibility here in Sweden. I hope yours will last a long time! The originals last like 15-20 years anyways so it should last you that long at least!

Were you not bothered by that massive defect in the injector socket wall on the new head? The whole purpose of this upgraded head is that the injector socket wall is twice as thick as the original, but the very first injector socket you look at has got a massive chip in the outer wall. I would have sent that back.

very well done job and video. My only additional point is to drill 9mm holes of exhaust manifold of cylinder 1,2,4,5 and leave the original 8mm for cylinder 3 as reference positioning of manifold itself. Than place the nut and locknut on the studs and tighten the minimum necessary to avoid gas leaks but leaving room for the manifold to expand and contract as a result of heating and cooling. I have run this system on both of my TD5s and the exhaust manifold have never had a problem again.

That's nice! I skimmed and dewebbed the manifold and used upgraded Würth studs and copper nuts which also works well👌🏼

I can't count how many times I've watched your videos! They are fantastic, so clear and easy to follow! Keep up the good work! At long last I am putting my head back on my 2006 Defender 110 TD5! I lost one of the Dowels. I found 2 that are shorter, can I bronze them to make them long enough? Would that be strong enough.

Great videos. Really useful. I have exactly the same Defender as you and I also have fuel in oil. It's booked in to be fixed and I'm hoping it will only be the Injector seals. But your videos make it very tempting for me to try and do it myself. If only I didn't have a family and a day job that keeps me busy :)

Hi nice video. My AMC head has been fitted 10 years and been no trouble at all. Slightly concerned the you used plastic head dowels as they looked black when you installed them. These were originally used by LR but allowed the head to move relative to the block and cause head gasket issues. They were updated to steel, possibly stainless steel and of course much better. Hope you’ve used steel ones.
@Td5Adventures
@Td5Adventures 3 жыл бұрын
Hey! Thank you, great to hear you've had no problems! Yes, unfortunately I fitted plastic dowels. According to the Haynes manual the VIN number of this 110 has to be refitted with plastic dowels, it says so specifically, so I didn't want to risk it. Unfortunately they are a weak link but in my case the original ones had been in for 267.000km so I still am not concerned about them failing immediately. If they were to fail some day I'll contact Turner Engineering and double check if steel dowels can be fitted then.

Hello TDAdventures I got my 2006 110 TD5 running again, I had given up trying to start it a few months ago but was encouraged by a mechanic who worked on it a few years ago to put a tiny bit of oil in the cylinders and started it running down a hill. It still doesn't want to start on the starter but runs ok. I made a mistake in lapping the valves as the head was off but was told I should not have as the valve clearances would become too tight. At this point I'm not sure what to do...

Very interesting Vedeo. When you clean the motor block surface, how can you make sure there is no dirt or debris going in the oil and water holes? I understand that you are putting some rags in the cylinders but I assume that the oil and water ports have to be clean also.
@Td5Adventures
@Td5Adventures Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Yes, it's always hard to keep everything clean. I kept coolant and oil in the block and changed the oil and coolant when I put it back together as well as after only about 100 kilometres to "clean" it out. And after cleaning the surface I used air tools to blow out the passages.

Hi thanks for the vids, I am currently doing the same swap with my own head. Did you transfer your old gauze from the fuel pressure regulator? Was just you don’t mention it and I only realised when moving the old head and it fell out. Great vids, helped me so much 👍

Thanks for watching, hope they help! I'm sorry I forgot to mention that, yes I moved the gauze little cylinder. I don't know why they don't supply a new one with a new gasket kit. Good luck!

Lol, they're so over-blamed for failing. They lasted 267.000km and still hadn't failed on the original application. So there's no reason for worrying.
