Your Land Rover repair videos are a lifesaver! I've been grappling with a persistent issue on my TD5 involving excessive black smoke and noticeable power loss. Your expertise in troubleshooting and fixing Land Rovers has been evident in your content, so I was wondering if you could shed some light on this particular issue. Your insights could not only help me but also countless others facing similar challenges. Looking forward to your thoughts on this!

I feel your pain! You are really great at explaining things in your videos and very thorough, thank you. I'm new to Land Rovers having bought a Wolf last year, lots to learn. And being a girl, sadly some people don't take me seriously. Can't wait to paint my cross member using your tutorial. I hope you get a solution for the cracked head 🤞

If your machine shop cannot repair your head, you can get a AMC cylinder head from Turner Engineering, they are meant to be a much better head than the origional. File this under "the joys of motoring" and keep up the good work.

Yeah I've been looking at the AMC head with the appropriate double wall thickness for the injector bores, would be nice if this head is not fixable!

I know the feeling (valuable personal experience). My advice is - get the head pressure tested. My td5 10P head was cracked in one of the valve ports and failed the pressure test + exhaust manifold was also warped.. All the typical td5 issues unfortunately.

Hi, can you please share some of yur experience with me? How do you first noticed de problem, was the oil level rised or only the smell on the dipstick was present? From what I've noticed from other posts on forumus and videos the cracked head lets good amounts of diesel get into oil. How did the oil smell compared to the other discos (known good I supose) I've seen in your videos? I'm really interested in this cause mine smells a little diesely but the level is steady, but only when the oil is warm and only the first time I'm reading the dipstick, what I mean by that is if I put the dipstick back and pull it out for a second sniff the smell is somewhat gone (maybe cause my nose is getting used to the smell, I'm getting paranoid about this), also when it's cold I can't smell it at all. I even added some diesel into the oil from last change and tried to compare the smells, but I can't definetly conclude something. I know that the only way is a test lab, but we don't have that in our country as a service for individuals..maybe some workshop do it but I'm not aware . So basically what I'm asking: when you first discovered the problem was your oil only smelling like diesel or also the level was rised, and how it compared with the smell of the other td5, I know it's been some time since you faced this land rover dilemma but any shared experience would be greatly apreciated. Thank you for you time and keep up the good work ;)

Hi! Yes, my oil level was rising. It was noticeable on the dipstick but I also measured exactly how much oil I put in it and then measured when draining the oil and saw that it was a few litres more in just 100 km. The oil smelt very much like diesel and was thin like diesel (water thin). If you don't see thin oil and a diesel smell you should be alright. Why do you think you might have this problem?

@@Td5Adventures I' realy hope it's not the case with my 2001MY td5, but I suspect o-ring failure and I want to be sure before adressing the problem. The oil looks good so far, the only thing that bugs me off is the slight scent from the dipstick. From all I have researched I still don't now how would the oil appear in case of o ring failure, I suppose the contamination would not be so obvius hence all this questions for my quest into landy world.
@Td5Adventures
@Td5Adventures 3 жыл бұрын
@@cosminnemes7364 If the o-rings are bad then your oil will get thin too. You can just replace the O-rings and see if it helps, it's not a difficult job and doesn't take much time 😉

Was you oil level rising. I changed over my injector seals a while ago as the oil level was really high. Oil doesn’t seem to be increasing however the oil still seems very thin
@Td5Adventures
@Td5Adventures 3 жыл бұрын
Yes! It was rising and getting thin! Make sure to change your oil and filters and measure exactly how much you pour into the engine, then drive for a while and empty the oil again to see how much comes out. I put about 6,5 litres in and after only 200km I emptied the engine off 11 litres😲 Don't drive on thin oil! Your turbo will go bad very soon

Too bad see crack there. I just had to replace the head with used one. Got crack in it and blown head gasket. I think this crack is repairable. In special shop good experienced welder can do the job done. It's the easyest way.

Thanks! Yeah, the crack is very accessible so I'm confident the machine shop will be able to weld it. I'll also let them inspect the head closely first to rule out more problems.

Sorry to see that you have this issue. There may be further issues with the engine even if you replace the head. It may be worth considering a replacement rebuild engine from a reputable company. I know this is expensive but you get what you pay for. Worth it if the Defender is a keeper. Buying a used head or engine is a high risk IMO unless you know its history.
@Td5Adventures
@Td5Adventures 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I'm either letting the head get welded or replace it with a brand new one. The engine is running perfectly fine, can't notice anything else wrong other than diesel in the oil so I'm not replacing all of it :)
