Refit your Td5 cylinder head and head gasket yourself following the steps shown in detail in this video!
This is basically a three part series where I show you in detail the whole process of removing the Td5 cylinder head, Discovery 2 or Defender, preparing a brand new cylinder head and then refitting the cylinder head!
There's a lot of useful information on what to do to change your head gasket as well. I also plan on using all the footage from these three parts and make one dedicated "head gasket replacement" video, that's to come when I get the time to edit it all :)

Head Swap!? shipping to Dominica(NOT Dominican Republic) is very expensive and add to that customs import duty! I can get a good TDI 200 for very little money, in fact the whole Discovery, maybe I should just swap engines! Can I get the traction control to work if I swap in a TDI motor? Can the 200 TDI be mated to a 110 R380 Gearbox?

Just watched all three videos a second time to end.....I am confident of doing Td5 head too (new AMC head from Turner Eng).....my Defender has done a lot of miles and the head has been off and skimmed previously. My understanding is that the Td5 head can only be skimmed once. I have no means or access to a workshop to get the head checked for cracks, so a new head was the rout I chose.......I am nervous about doing the job and still have that "scary" feeling as you did. The scariest part for me is torqueing down the head bolts 90, 180 then 45 degrees! All will be the same for me except I need to build a purpose bench on wheels to lower the head onto after pushing the Landy back out the way. I am on my own so will use a block and tackle for removal and re-fitting......like you, I am awaiting a few additional parts to go with the head gasket set I already have from Turner Eng. Great informative videos and what a perfect easy listening voice you have too! Cheers, Jon

Thanks for watching! As long as you take your time it will go well👌🏼 You could ask someone to help you lift the head on and off, it is easy with two people. The torquing was scary but once I started it went pretty well! Good luck!

At 26:00 mins you wind the cam onto full lift of the rocker, you then adjust the tappet until contact with the valve is made, then wind off one turn, this surely means that the cam/rocker, adjustment is without purpose as it will achieve nothing in operation, could you please explain it's function. I have past experience replacing head gaskets on many petrol engines. Very nervous about attempting my Td5 head gasket which is leaking and pressurising the coolant. Found your videos today and they are truly quality. I will definitely be doing myself, I already have the Turner Engineering gasket kits. One question - where did you purchase the new exhaust studs and brass nuts as I'd like to replace same? I do not have the means or access to specialist for determining whether the head is cracked or warped. It has been skimmed once by Land Rover some years back and I understand that the heads cannot be skimmed twice? Anyhow, I have already had my eyes on the AMC head from Turner, so may well just plump for that option too. I shall be re-looking at your videos a number of times. ps. you are right on the Haynes manual where you have too sort through the Tdi and Td5 differences - a bit of a pain. I also have the Land Rover manuals, but are difficult to wade through....Cheers, Jon

Sorry for the slow reply!! Thanks for watching! The brass nuts and upgraded studs are available from eBay, I haven't found them on the big Landy part sites. Search for Td5 Würth exhaust studs. I hope these videos will help you do the job! Thanks for watching!

Hi! new subscriber from Canada and new owner of a 2002 TD5. Congratulation for the quality of your videos. I noticed that your fuel pump was noisy. Myne is also noisy and I am wondering if it is typical of a TD5. We don't have a lot of Defender around here to compare with so I was curious if I have to replaced it.
@Td5Adventures
@Td5Adventures 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for subscribing! Awesome job getting a Defender! The fuel pump makes a lot of noise but it's not excessive and doesn't really show signs of wear. It is also hard to judge by video as sound levels really differ from what we experience irl. I'd say just run it until it fails unless you're going very remote and really rely on it!

Did your TD5 have plastic or steel plugs originally fitted, I have a 2002 2A626857 Defender and I think it should have steel dowels but not sure. I have not had any cylinder head issues as yet and hope I don't in future. Great video very informative, thankyou.

Thus was a 2A623103 with plastic dowels and according to the Haynes manual they were supposed to be replaced with plastic ones again, so I did that, they hadn't failed in 270.000km so they will probably last another 270k at least!

Can you explain how you ensure the top sprocket for the timing chain gets bolted down at the correct position in relation to the piston positions. Thanks

The sprocket bolts are tightened AFTER tightening the chain tensioner, that way they are always tightened in the correct setting. Hope this helped!

Hi great video. Just about to do rings, big end, head etc. 180000miles on mine so really just doing it for a freshen up as shes starting to blow by a bit. How do you asses if the timing chain and sprockets need replacing? Or at that mileage i should just do it regardless? Thanks
@Td5Adventures
@Td5Adventures Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! If you can afford it then replace the chain and sprocket but if not and they haven't shown any signs of wear then they should last you lots more miles. The chain isn't a know item to fail commonly on the Td5 👌🏼
@stickydingo
@stickydingo Жыл бұрын
@@Td5Adventures ok thanks. So I suppose the question is how do you determine if the chain/ sprockets are showing signs of wear? Is it measurable? Or compare a new sprocket with the old one etc. Experience is likely the best way but as this is the first td5 I've tackled be good to hear if anyone had method to working it out. Cheers

Great Videos. By chance did you observe how much Torque on your your torque wrench at the 90 180 and 45 degree sequences?
@Td5Adventures
@Td5Adventures Жыл бұрын
Thank you and thanks for watching! No, the 90°, 180° and 45° sequences are done without a torque wrench. It requires a lot of strength but is purely based on how much you turn the bolts and not how much torque is required.

@@Td5Adventures wowww thanks for your quick response! I realize that but was just wondering by chance if you did. before i bought my TD5 had pitting in the head due to wrong coolant used in the cooling system.(that's what I was told) it was welded up to fill in the pitting and cut back to specs. however I am finding oil in the cooling system so before I pull the head to inspect I want to just make sure the head bolts are torqued down to 90+ NM...would be interested to know the final value after its all done.
@Td5Adventures
@Td5Adventures Жыл бұрын
@captarmour ah i see! I guess the only way to find out is to remove all the head bolts and replace them with new ones and tightening them yourself, to know I is properly done up. But I'm guessing your head gasket might need replacing or something is wrong with the head. If it has been done recently I'd go back to whoever did the job, should be some sort of warranty job if it has been done improperly.
