I've been to Slab City. Everyone was super friendly and the residents are mostly societal outcasts, many with mental illness. Law is out there about once per day, usually for drugs. The art there is beautiful and unique and the people are incredibly passionate about their community so it always hurts to see them painted in a negative light.

my close friend and ex-boyfriend, who unfortunately died a couple years back, was in slab city for a couple of days because his abusive partner kicked him out. i was the only person who could let him stay for an extended period, so he had to drive a uhaul from texas to northern california while going through heroin withdrawal. slab city was about halfway on his route so he stopped there to sleep and eat and all those things you need to do to live. that is the type of story that is common among slab city residents, and to treat those people as evil npcs for a shitty youtube video is repulsive in a way i cant describe. its absurd how little empathy people have for those on the margins of society

The throwing out the food thing was pretty bad, but i dont feel like it was nearly as bad as the kind of message he spread on his platform about the people living in slab city and also just going to Hawaii against the wishes of the locals living there. I mean dont get me wrong, throwing someone elses food out without a second thought or even concern that maybe it belonged to someone else was disgusting. But it broke my heart even more to see him make the people of slab city out to be dirty drug addicted scum, and be so disrespectful to the people of Hawaii by showing up. Him and his friends are just disgusting people all around.

(As someone that lives in Hawaii I wanted to share my personal thoughts) What he threw away is a common breakfast/snack thing that you can buy in stores (it’s spam, eggs, sausage, and sometimes rice) Hawaii is surprisingly expensive so that house is actually pretty well sized (also that means that the food is more expensive so that food was probably around 10-14$ and they don’t put a lot in there) and honestly watching him act that way made me want to bathe him in Pele’s hair

As much as I dislike Brent Rivera, coach class airplane seats are cramped. At least on the airline I’m used to flying, the seats have gotten smaller and more cramped together, and like, heaven forbid your taller than like 5’. Like it’s manageable sure, but let’s not forget that airlines are encouraged to make coach class seats as small and as cheaply as possible. It also doesn’t help that I myself, have mild claustrophobia, but still.

like others have said, the casually throwing away someone else’s breakfast was so hard to watch. in my culture we’re taught to believe that everything we have was given to us by the animals and plants who gave up their lives so we could live. so to watch people not only be disgusted by what was probably someone else’s meal that they were looking forward to, but then to throw it out and look down on it, was really frustrating. it just made my blood boil

@@cupriferouscatalyst3708 I live in Hawaiʻi & things are so bad here. I have mental breakdowns almost daily for how hard it is to just afford necessities & I’m technically middle class based on US standards. Native Hawaiians make up 10% of our population but over half of the homeless population. In our culture the land here means everything to us. It’s where we come from; it’s where our ancestors are. We fight so hard to stay here & some of us fight until it gets to a point you can no longer leave to live somewhere affordable. I really appreciated Kurtis’s response to them coming here & how they treated the people Brent’s sister was staying with. Also, there’s literally no way she spent $50 to stay there. She most likely spent at least $100-150 per night. Hostels cost $70 a night & Air Bnbs have so many restrictions due to laws in place to prevent rent increases, so they’re really expensive.

A finnish youtuber called Miska also stayed overnight in Slab City. People there were nice and helpful, they told him just to not keep out expensive filming gear or anything of the sort and to be careful moving around during dark. He even visited a local bar/pub/nightclub there and the people were all nice and talkative. And yes, he did ask if there's laws - yes, there is. There's rules and there's laws.

i am genuinely seething about the girl complaining she had to share a room with 2 other people, and then threw food away because it "came with the place". She really just tossed out her roommate's food. evil behavior

I've litterally cried because I was waiting all day to come home and eat my food only to find out it was thrown away. like it would seem like it's not a big deal but when it's your driving motivation to get through the day it really hurts to have it trashed.
@Noone-hp8zm

Wasn't it Brent who threw it away though? I feel like the friend in that was acting a script made by him. And even if the complaints were the real response, I feel like it says something that it was untouched before the 2 others guys came over. Like spoiled, but not THAT far out of touch to throw a stranger's meal into trash, one lending their house at least

No but that would literally cause me to cry for hours. Like, my roommate accidentally threw out my milkshake the other day and I cried in my room for a while, I can't imagine if someone threw out a bunch of food that I was probably looking forward to eating later, just for a video or sm. I would probably be upset for a couple days honestly

I went to Slab City in 2017 and it was actually a beautiful example of how community members take care of eachother through collaborative efforts despite the area being extremely poor. It's treated as a tourist attraction during the winter time because in the summer it gets so hot that most of the people there move elsewhere, but those who stick around year-round are very nice and helpful. The only instance I've ever heard of Slab City being dangerous is the occasional harassment of obnoxious tourists, drug overdoses, or heat exhaustion.

As someone who is born and raised, and currently living in Hawaii. I can say we dislike people who act like this. If you come to Hawaii: respect the people, the places, and the rules. If not, do not come. Hawaii is a home to many wonderful cultures and people, it’s not your playground to act disrespectful.
