It's not being glued to the phones per se that's the problem. Back then the only way fans could really share how they felt was through crowd reactions. Fans can react immediately on social media now. There is no emotional build up anymore for big pops. Takes a 7 year buildup now instead of a 2-3 month buildup then

I remember that match & HATING IT. (Im 42) so my taste was older wrestling & I didn't follow dirt sheets. I was recording every episode of RAW/SMACKDOWN/HEAT etc & my friends & I would break it down pre KZfaq era (We worked the Indy scene in Florida) & tape trading was still a thing. So it was important for us to do commentary, & call matches & study moves etc. We were professionals as much as any 22-25 year olds could be that had watched wrestling & worked in the business their whole lives could be. Which is why it pisses me off to see so many fake KZfaqrs think they understand those days. They are re-writing history & things are being changed just as Jim Cornette says. I am slowly trying to learn KZfaq & post a little about wrestling but I would love to have a full shoot interview show where I set the historical records straight.

In a way, them leaving was best for business. I don't think Cena would get his push, had Brock stayed, I don't think Batista and Orton would've been in the title picture so often had these guys stayed. Edge would probably still be a mid carder. A lot of things that happened in the early 2000s shaped, the superstars we know today. The Rock leaving for Hollywood, Austin's neck putting him on the shelf. In a way, these things forced Vince to push stars he would never have pushed.
@johnnys4094
@johnnys4094 Жыл бұрын
I respect your opinion on this. I personally think Cena would’ve still got a push still especially after dropping that U Can’t See Me song a year after. Song was huge and played everywhere. Vince would’ve gave Cena that push because he was getting so much shine from just that song alone back then. Lesnar and Goldberg were going to fizzle out anyways. They were just powerhouses but terrible on the mic. They left at a good time. Orton would’ve faced Goldberg as a heel and lost to him but still wouldn’t get push that he got after Goldberg left. Also I agree Edge definitely would’ve stayed a mid carder lol.

Man this match should've been a clash of the titans classic. I hate they left since there was still a lot of potential dream matches to be had for both goldberg & Brock down the line. Something that wwe or most sites never brings up is that Goldberg had a successful short run in AJPW from 2002-2003 before his short run in wwe in 2003-2004. Brock also had a somewhat longer but more successful run for NJPW from 2005-2007 in which he won the iwgp world title in his debut match. His match against former sumo champion Akebono was the only time in which Brock failed to hit the F-5 which he renamed The Verdict because of an ongoing lawsuit with wwe at the time. His last match for NJPW had Brock vs then tna world champion at the time Kurt Angle. Brock was unable to return to Japan to defend the title against Hiroshi Tanahashi because of visa issues so he dropped the title to Kurt. & that was the last time we saw Brock in a wrestling ring until 2012.

@@bwestacado9643 that we can agree on. Spent most of his WWE life having to put duds over like Khali, GG, Sid etc. Let's make no mistake Taker is easily top 5 of all time depending who you ask, but he'd be on the WWE Mt Rushmore with better booking and more title reigns, even if it was just him chasing the title and being in that picture consistently as he should have been. Taker was over with the crowd the instant Million $ Man introduced him until his retirement and somehow that gimmick never even went stale. Man knew just when to adjust thay character and persona to keep it fresh. Nobody will ever manage that again. Cena couldn't, Hogan couldn't, Buckland couldn't, Roman couldn't. Only Steve Austin, Michaels, Rock and Taker could ever get away with running the same gimmick for so long. Mark Calloway is indeed a "sport entertainment" genius. Just wish most of his feuds and title runs weren't wasted as they were, through no fault of his own. You can see that guys like him, Cena and Hart breathed wrestling and would do whatever to make it succeed, even make themselves look bad.

The first match was better because it was during a time when both men were nearly unbeatable. A match between old men later on is insignificant because it’s basically two different wrestlers at that point. The fans being butt hurt about a wrestlers leaving didn’t change what the match meant to me.

The Ruthless Aggression Era is right up there with the Attitude Era...even more polished storylines & even bigger dream matches and PPVs. I rem watching this match as a kid and was both hyped and let down, BUT thats what happens with 2 Titans. But MAN was the Build Up & Promo to this match was fucking EPIC!!!

I had a friend in high school that would record Monday night Raw and sometimes ppv on vhs. But he rarely got the ppv because it cost so much back then(early 2000s). I know that feeling...😌 then I had a group of friends where we would discuss wrestling and the storylines. Good times...

I really like how he keeps it in perspective, really pragmatic about what was happening and why, being real about what was going on, and just didn't let it get to him. I was kind of torn inbetween for vs against Bill because I had seen his run through WCW. There was a lot of sentiment about "who does Goldberg think he is?!" by the fans who were more dedicated to WWE. But at the same time I had hoped for a match between these two. Obviously was hoping it was going to go better than it did. It was okay but...hind sight is 20/20 even if it's still a bit fuzzy as it was. Guess I didn't really have the low-down at the time on what was going on backstage and Jim Ross told us Lesnar was leaving for the NFL which was short-lived because he got in a motorcycle accident a few months into it. I learned later on about Bill's animosity and attitude about the business and why. But I don't think I ever really held it against him, even if I still think he wasn't the safest wrestler to work with.

I agree this match felt like neither of them wanted to be there and they didn’t. I’m glad said that part that he felt the fans had a right not to choose to cheer for them because they were both leaving.
