I agree about giving. That’s a first for us every month and I dream of the day we can give BIG! Our biggest money saving strategy is to not take on any monthly payments or reoccurring debt. We want our monthly expenses as low as possible, for those “just in case” months, when something happens and there isn’t a lot of cash to go out. That means we pay cash for cars, pay yearly insurance premiums in full, pay cash for phones and everything else that we can opt for one payment instead of monthly payments.

Rule this!! Hi Kate! Great video as always! I have been utilizing every rule you listed for the past 20 years and they are all spot on! The one thing I did add was a spending allowance for my husband. I do all the financial stuff in the relationship which meant I had to be the bad guy and say NO to my husbands wants. It really put a strain on my marriage. I set him up with his own spending account about 10 years ago! He gets the same amount every month and he can spend it on anything he wants and I am no longer the mean wife!! Lol! Saved us a lot of stress!!! Keep being you because you are marvelous!! 🤗

We do the same and it definitely benefits us. Each person should get a budget amount that is their money to do with as they please. They just have to stay in their $ limit.

Rule This! I check my accounts daily and have everything set up on auto pay. I’m knocking out my car loan as fast as I can. So soon we will be debt free.

Use sinking funds for those bills you get a discount on if you pay them in 1/2 , or 1/4 year increments. Those small savings add up. Took me a year to save the extra to pay our auto insurance in 6 month increments but the $20 savings we felt right away as an extra payment on debt. Use "snowflake" payments to pay a little extra on debt in-between due dates. Truly makes all the difference.

Giving is so important. It's like some sort of cosmic law~when you give, even a little, you always get something in return, whether it's material or a deep great feeling that you're making a huge difference in someone's life. My one frugal thing I do (okay, two..:) is give every buck I have a job and put everything in an envelope. Okay, three: I moved my bank to another town so that I have to make a very deliberate decision to go and deposit that cash. Most of the time it just stays in the ol' envelope.. :) Great advice, Kate. Keep it coming! :)

My money rule I follow is tracking every expense I spend daily so I know my actual budgeted amounts in my 4 spending categories. Grocery/Household, Restaurants, Miscellaneous, and Gasoline. That is what keeps me in budget and I do this paycheck to paycheck. Great video!

100% - Budgeting is THE most important thing to do - Especially when you are trying to reduce your debt burden on the cusp of retirement...

My top personal finance advice: have a brutally honest, written household budget that accounts for EVERY SINGLE KNOWN EXPENSE, from the routine monthly expenditures to semi annual, annual, every 3 years (septic) etc. My budget has always been designed this way. Case in point: HVAC. I just had all of my HVAC appointments completed. I knew about them, I've set aside $X monthly per line item, every month for 12 months, so when the appointment is made, I've got the funds. ZERO financial stress. While my budget does have some variable expenses (food, clothing, medical come to mind), experience has helped me to allocate set amounts monthly. Should I go over, I make sure to deduct from the upcoming month. It comes out in the end. And yes, my budget is the same for 12 months out of the year. All monies (outside of my extra-keep reading), are accounted for. I may not spend those monies on the line item, they may be amassing until it's time to spend it for annual expenses. Living well, well below my means translates into a significant amount of after tax income on a monthly basis. I set aside these funds as I save for the next project/goal such as the drainage work I have on deck this Fall. I got my quote, am saving and once I have it all amassed, I will call my landscaper and set the job up. No additional debt that I can't pay off immediately. Does life throw curveballs? Absolutely! I just incurred a large, unexpected Propane bill, thanks to Isaisas (SP?), so I have fewer dollars to set aside this month, as I work towards my Oct 1 goal, which will soon be met. I have $2000 built into my checking account, and have a savings account/e fund attached to my checking account. I no longer need 6 months of living expenses amassed as I retired early, and have a set pension for life.

My Dad drilled the following into our heads, as regards credit. Yes, credit/loan for home or education if OK. Otherwise, do not put anything on credit if you don't have the funds to pay for it UNLESS it is a repair to a vehicle to get to work or the purchase of a piece of work clothing NEEDED to keep your job. If the work related expenses occur, pay them off ASAP. Key, overarching concept: you're working!

YNAB is so amazing because it enables me to use my credit card like a debit card! 🤩 So for example if I spend money from my Grocery category YNAB “moves” money from my digital Grocery envelope to my Credit Card envelope...so there’s always the exact amount of cash set aside to pay the card at any time! It’s been life changing! We earn free cash back this way every month just from paying our regular bills and expenses.

100% agree. I do practice all. 👍 For me rule 1 and 10 are definitely the main ones. If you live below your means it automatically set you up to have left over money=savings. When you practice generosity you will have abundance in return, It’s the law of sowing and reaping. About rule#2 In my house we have a saying: rich people make money first and they spend it later vs poor people spend money first and they might make it later.👎

Most of the time people run out of money not only because they don't do these things (and everything you said) its because they are spending on "stuff" snacks, candy, cigarettes, alcohol, and cute little things they see etc. tfs Have a good weekend Kate ! 💗💗💗💗

Just seeing the numbers and track them makes you spent less! I check once every week, half way in to the month, and perhaps you had unforseen costs (things happen...)you still can keep the budget that month for example I than skip the hairdressor or skip my planned eating out. Or in case of emergency ( like extra food cost to the fill up the pantry in februari) I use my saving and alter next( couple of ) months budgets right away to save up again as fast as i can!

Thank you for all of your Budgeting, Living Below Your Means, Frugal Living & Savings tips. Today I achieved an important goal: I was able to replace my 18 yr. old car with tons of mechanical issues (194,000+ miles). Thanks to you I saved & was able to buy a 1 yr. Old car with 30,000 miles & Still under Manufacturer's Warranty! This time when I bought my car I wasn't only making a Down Payment. This time is different: This time my car IS PAID IN FULL since I saved a lot & was able to just get a Cashier's Check for the entire amount. I can't tell you how thrilled & excitrd I am to have Zero Monthly payments & Best of All...Zero Interest to pay!! I owe it all to you Kate. Thank you! You Are the BEST! I could never have accomplished this without your wisdom & guidance. You are my Hero & inspiration. As a single woman I finally realize the true importance of saving & being able to achieve my goals & not be stressed out over money. Sending you a Big Hug.❤

I love having savings goals to turn something that seems like drudgery to most people into a game. We paid off our house in just under 6 1/2 years because we made a game out of it. It was kind of like a money scavenger hunt. You wind up asking yourself what you can do to save money today. Twenty dollars here... forty dollars there... It all adds up and surprisingly quickly.

Hi Kate The money rule that I followed was to set up automatic deductions from my pay check for retirement. At first it was hard but soon I adjusted to living on less. I got into a financial problem and stopped contributing for a few years and really regret it now that I’m retired. I should have looked for a different way to solve the problem like a tighter budget or another source of income. Later on when I got a raise I saw it as a time to jump back in. I was ok without the raise so I arranged for the amount of the raise to be directly deposited into my 403B (like a 401K). Each time I got a raise I put that percentage in. I also got a company match which made it even better. So my advice to everyone out there is to take care of your retirement because it comes around quicker than you imagine. You’ll thank me later.

Creating a sinking fund for larger purchases. This way I only have to save a smaller portion each month but get a bigger reward at the end.

I track everything except for petty cash. In Europe is not common to pay a coffee or a baguette with a card, most shops won’t allow it so you need some cash. I budget around 20€ a week for those things (and I write it down on my budget as cash) but I don’t track if those 20€ were ten coffees with friends or five coffees and a visit to the cinema. Other than that I track every expense right after swiping my card on my spreadsheet (I keep it in my phone for easy access).

Yearly budget what? LOL, We are an every paycheck budget. My husband gets paid biweekly and yes we use the every dollar app. And we discovered we can use it per paycheck instead of monthly. I use actual amounts instead of guessing what the amounts will be. This works for us and yes I am a stay at home housewife and have the time to organize our budget this way, I know others don't have this time and that's ok. But, I did want people to know you can use the every dollar app per paycheck instead of monthly. Happy Budgeting and Happy Friday!

Hey Kate🤗. When you paid off your car was there any reason that you saved up the money to pay off your car off instead of making "snowball" payments to save yourself interest along the way? Your background trees look so lush and pretty😍
