"Construction from hell" happens all over the world, even in the US and Canada. Happened to my cousin in California.

My advice to you as a Filipino living here in the islands, is that as a foreigner trying to build a structure, you will get exposed to scammers due to language barrier and as you mentioned lack of construction knowledge. Would be preferable if you had a Filipino friend whom you can trust to act as a mediator or negotiator on your behalf who knows construction. Best of Luck!

Very sorry to hear what you’d been through while constructing your own home. Nowadays scammers are everywhere and will always rip you off, and of course this is not just happening in the Philippines. I have my own home built here in Australia and I swear I could have punched some people for treating me like I’m idiot. But that emotional turmoil has passed now. What I see now is the reward of all those troubles because my humble house is now gaining popularity among home buyers. I see why you can’t see the same benefits especially now that Siargao is making its name to the world.

This one mayor in USA woke me up when he said he went to visit the islands one time and was surprised that we are all divided by oceans,islands and tribal groups and beliefs, at the end of the day we all united with one flag. Loved your house. Stay safe life is tough out there but it's no better either on the other side of the globe. Tal why don't you find some oldy Filipinos or them lasingos in the streets there to help you build a house? Anyway you're right. I just have a suggestion, I think it would be nice if U enclosed ur kitchen with all glass , just to feel more secured and at the same time U can still enjoy the view from outside. But , it's all up to U ok. I really like ur house cuz it will be easy to manage .

There are foreigners who build their house in the PH. Sunshine Shoulders (American), FinnSnow (Icelandic) to name a few. They also have their own struggles if you listen their own story in KZfaq.

Thank you for sharing the troubles you went through in building your house. I understand about your experience being a homeowner myself having dealt with dishonest contractors here in the US. There will always be expenses related to maintenance so keep that in mind. Really love your house and your dog and chickens. Hopefully the kitchen will be enclosed with a glass door in the future. I am single and I also built a small bungalow during the time when I was still working .. though I had also some problems then but since the work was on straight contract like for example my contract was 400,000 pesos for the 2 bedroom and 2 comfort/bath rooms, luckily, I contracted with a young architect and a young civil engineer as partners whose family business is on construction, so I was blessed to have them to do the job .. this was way back in 1996-early part of 1997
