Today, we ask the question: Can you swap different engine's in your Jeep? whether it be older to newer or newer to older. This applies to the jeep liberty Jeep Comander Jeep grand Cherokee why they will work, and won’t work. Pertaining to the 3.7 and the 4.7 Jeep engines this will also be helpful on Dodge Durango‘s Chrysler Aspen‘s Dodge ram pick up truck dodge Dakota pick up trucks as well. Although some of the different truck styles may require you remove the oil pan and switch them over so they fit correctly. Hopefully the video informs you a little bit and you gain a little bit of knowledge that you may not of had about a 3.7 4.7 Engines.

I could use some advice. Want to swap the 3.6l that's in my 2012 Wrangler JK with a 4.7l. Can it be done? Does it have to come out of a Jeep or can I use a 4.7 magnum out of a 06 ram? Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks.

I got a pretty clean 07 Nitro R/T 4.0 I’ve been debating on putting either the 4.7 or the 5.7 in it I’ve heard the trans and axels in the R/T are pretty decent

hey clay i have a 02 jeep liberty sport 3.7l and it now has a bad ticking noise, already checked lifters and rockers and their still in place. did notice timing chain had alot of slack so assuming maybe chain guides and or tensioners broke and making all the noise but anyways i wanted to know how diffucult would it be and what yr model to look for on a 4.7l v8 to put inplace of my 3.7?. i know thier pretty simular motors but just needing info on what yrs of motors i could use.. thanks..

I have my 2003 Jeep Liberty 3.7l, changed to an h100 engine, from gas to diesel, from automatic to manual. So I would say you can do anything 😂

I think our ideas of older motors are it the same. I want to put a old-school 318 or 360 in a 2002 liberty 4x4 with manual transmission. I'm trying to find out if the bolt patterns are the same and other issues like fly wheel and starter that may creep up.

You can swap in the later 2008 Corsair 4.7 with 310 HP (approx) into the 2004 and older JGC's by changing the 32 tooth ring and cam sensor to the 16 tooth, and the motor doesn' t need to be disassembled except for the oil pan and some minor other things. A custom program may be needed...easy also to do (if you are capable of swapping any basic engine, which will still pass state smog with no CEL PO-codes. Other things you covered. I did this myself on my 20 JGC Limited, removing the factory low HP 4.7 Vin N. I have the Magnesium VC's, HO intake, coils. You extend the coil harnesses for the extra plugs as the later 4.7's had 16 plugs, EGR etc.

I want to know if the bell housing for a 3.7 will fit an old school chrysler 360. I have a nice 4x4 liberty with a 5 speed and a motor that runs but sounds like it's eating itself alive. I know the bell housings look similar but I don't know if they'll bolt up. Also if I could use the liberty's flywheel, use an 70s era chrysler flywheel or have to customize something. 8 hate the 3.7 so if I can't put an old 360 in it or if I can't find a 3.7 that runs good for cheap I'm probably gonna scrap the damn thing.

I had a shop put the in a commander v6 he didn't put the tin plate between the motor and transmission is this going to be ok

If you unplug the cam position sensor will the engine run? Should it run? Or at least start? Should it not start? Just had engine put in my Liberty 2002 and there was a question about a lifter bleeding off when hot soaked. Engine builder asked me to pull cam sensor and start it and call him with the result. I did and engine didn't start, tried 2 times. Plugged it in and engine fired right up. He has not called me back after I left a message with him with the result.

If it’s out of time it will run with the cam sensor unplugged that’s why he said that.

@@sharpcarco That means mine is good then. Second engine I put in this Jeep. First one did myself in 2015, last fall got misfire and turned out to be scuffed cylinder and piston #5. Had shop install this time. Engine builder rebuilt same block since it was under warranty. Only 25k miles on it but it always got bad mileage, less than 14mpg.

Well I’m not sure why he’s asking you to unplug it if it’s still running properly but if it runs better when it’s unplugged that means it’s out of time sorry I should’ve been more specific in my last message. That’s strange that it will not run with it unplugged. It should run either way. If it’s out of time it may run better and with it plugged in if it doesn’t run at all that means it’s 100% out of time but when everything is working correctly with it plugged in or unplugged it should run either way. It’s common for them stupid lifters to collapse I actually made a video that I have an added it out yet . Or I take a couple of them apart the Chinese ones and the original ones probably made in Mexico I’m guessing. I can see the difference between cheap ones and the more expensive ones. Thanks for reminding me I should get that video edited…….. along with like 20 others.

Neither the 4.7 nor the 3.7 ever came with dual spark plugs that’s the 5.7 hemi that came with them

No, I’m pretty sure the Transmission will be fine. Personally never done it but I’m 95% certain that it will not be necessary to replace it I know for certain that it will bolt up

Sorry Joel I have not done that procedure you would need the computers at the very least. I’m sure you’re aware of that but I’m pretty sure you can move the motor mounts to the right location I’m not sure why it wouldn’t work except the liberty is a lot shorter and I know there’s not as much engine space in the liberty as there is the commander

Not a Cherokee and I don’t think so in the grand Cherokee, because I pretty sure that the grand Cherokee came with 3 L or the V8 version I forget the difference engine displacement for the V8 versions but I don’t think any of them came with a 3.7 that I remember if it came with a 3.7 then the 3.7 will work on it if it came with a 4.7 in The 4.7 will work in it.

Like to put a carbureted 3.9 l engine in a liberty . Can get them to run forever and have good power .Would it bolt up?

Well, maybe there’s something that I don’t understand, but I’m 49 years old and there is absolutely no benefit to putting in a carburetor on an engine versus fuel injection with the exception of simplicity if you understand how fuel injection works, there is no denying that fuel injection is far superior over any carbonation under any circumstance with the exception of simplicity But fuel injection is not complicated at all. It’s very simple. Your O2 sensor measures the fuel air mixture. Your fuel injectors will compensate much better and give you a more even torque and horsepower.

@@sharpcarco Know all about FI . Looking for simplicity of a carb, electronic ignition with a vacuum advance . Yes FI does run better cold especially on a Chrysler . But take a 3.9 l before magnums . Seen many TBI hit 300k and not break the bank on fuel economy like the 3.7 and it is FI . Still trying to figure out why the 3.7 -4.7 line of engines drinks so much fuel in comparison to say the older 3,9-5.2 .carb or tbi . Seems as soon as they went port fuel gas mileage efficacy went out the window and it should had been the opposite especially with sequential fuel

If it came with it, you can put it in there and the Jeep grand Cherokee did come with a 5.7 hemi so you can put it in there it’s just not quite as simple as just putting the motor in there because then you need all the computer and all the wiring harness and the transmission

@@sharpcarco I can't rebuild it. No parts to rebuild. I ordered a whole new engine from autozone but that was literally almost a year ago.

That’s not a new engine. Read it correctly that is a remanufactured engine. Never heard of AutoZone selling a brand new one but I guess I could be wrong. More than likely it’s remanufactured tho

I’ve got a 2008 grand Cherokee 3.7 v6 with egr. Has 273,000 miles on it and runs great but is just now starting to show signs of head or head gasket issues. Probably going to opt for a 3.7 reman engine swap to start fresh

Hello Clay, I swapped 2001 3.7 from Jeep Liberty into a 2004 Durango that originally had 3.7. I can not get it to start. Can you offer any insight of how to proceed.

Hmmm unplug the cam sensor and see if it starts that way if it does that means the timing is off. Now that’s kind of a tricky situation to because one of them years and I don’t remember exactly which one that went from a 16 tooth reluctor ring to a 32 tooth reluctor ring and I hope that’s not the case. I hope that cam sensor trick helps you though.

You are correct, after further research I installed a 16 tooth into my car which originally comes with 32.

I would consider possibly changing out the ECM…. I don’t know if it’ll work for certain, but it may.

And I’m curious, will it run with the cam sensor unplugged? I don’t imagine it would because it’s reading more teeth than it should have.

You can but you won’t have a better fuel economy. Because of the lack of power. The V6 in these vehicles is really kind of a dog. I’m working on improving them though so hopefully in a couple of months I have something.

This is why I like the old 350 chevy engines The jeeps look cool BUT the engines SUCK BIG time. And yes we have a Jeep Grand Cherokee with a bad timing chain. What a nightmare.

Well of course you can! you can put a Chevy engine in there if you want to…. The real question is does it make sense? Is it cost-effective? If you have another jeep and all of the running gear and all of the wiring harnesses yeah that would be probably fairly easy I would guess. If you don’t you’re going to need a lot of things to be able to do it. Anybody can do anything they want to it’s just a matter of if they should or not.

Yes you can , you need a 03 ram computer and re pin 8 wires for the injectors and plugs , it's been done several times before a guy in New York does it , I'm HUGE into the libertys currently putting a 4.0 in mine

I suppose what I should’ve said in my original response was The best way to do an engine swap that’s practical and economical is to buy a wrecked vehicle that has the driveline in it that you want then you will have everything that you need to swap the engine….. You could put any engine in anything that you want….. The only issue is does it make sense. Without having another vehicle there side-by-side you may find that there’s pieces that you don’t have so I highly recommend buying the whole vehicle because once you’re done with the whole vehicle and you’ve taken all the parts out that you wanted then you can sell the vehicle for Scrap and recoup probably at least $1000 of your money. Between the catalytic converter’s and the weight of the scrap

By the way a jeep patriot is not a framed vehicle so it would need to be a drive line that has a sub structure underneath it. It would be difficult to get one to work but I’m certain that you could figure it out. If you want to

Jeep 3.7L and 4.7L engines are not reliables like old Magnum engines were.

In California you cannot swap out your engine for an older different size engine. The ass🤡's will give you hell for it when you go to get your smog cert !

If you transfer the parts from the one engine to the other engine no technically you don’t you need to follow the rules and pay attention to what I said about the EGR valve in this video because you’re gonna need that driver side cylinder head to be the same on both vehicles other than that you should pretty much be OK with just about any motor after 2005 if i remember correctly

Well you’re only limited by space and your abilities. But I would keep it factory. There’s a lot involved in Putting a different kind of engine or a different displacement engine in a vehicle and a jeep compass is pretty much ………no offense to your vehicle a throwaway car kind of like a dodge neon
