This is not a nut and bolt video I’m assuming if you’re able to remove your engine or thinking about it. you probably know where most Of the bolts are. this explains to you how we did it anf the things we left in it and the things we took out of it we have done several of these engines and this does seem to be the quickest procedure (not that there’s somebody who can’t do it quicker than we can or better) this procedure is pretty much the same for the 2008 Jeep liberty 3.7 V6 2009 Jeep liberty 2010 Jeep liberty 2011 Jeep liberty 2012 Jeep liberty 2013 Jeep Liberty. Engine removal

Hey Clay, I’m wondering if it would be possible to swap out a 3.7l v6 from an 09 liberty with a 3.6l v6 pentastar engine? If so, I’m in ann arbor, maybe I’d bring it up to you.

Hello Joey .Do you already have the 3.6 engine? . I am absolutely certain it’s possible and I think about the best most economical way to do it would be to buy a wrecked one and take the components off of it and put them in there so yeah absolutely would be possible , economical probably not very much. I would Guess parts and labor would probably be somewhere right around five grand I’m just guessing of course I could be a little bit lower. And I’m fairly certain the parts and labor for us to do the work here at the shop repairing and remanufacturing your 3.7 that you already have would probably be somewhere right around 3500 parts and labor . But it would surely be a very cool project to do and from what I know about the pentastar engines there a better engine. Personally as far as I’m concerned I’m always the first but I may be a little bit biased lol 😂

Do you think I could use only the A/C bolt hole to lift the engine a few inches? I intend to replace the oil pan.

Certainly if the AC compressor is removed. You don’t have to disconnect it you could just sit it off to the side. Then you can use one of the bolt holes that are on the backside of the cylinder head to hold the chain on just put your hand back there there are always bolt holes.

when removing the wiring harness, can you unclip the harness some place, or do you have to unclip everything from motor ? I have a 05 liberty that i will be moving the motor from and transplanting that motor to a 04 body..

Well generally I just undo all the wiring harness off of the engine by you could pull the fuse block, and release the connector from inside there, Psychologically speaking it looks like a difficult thing to do but it’s truly not

@@sharpcarco ever done a 05 motor to a 04 body both are 3.7l ? i been trying to find info, on if i have to change anything out inside the motor , i know going from a 02 motor to a 06 motor, you have to change out the right cam sprocket and the reluc ring for timing reason.. due to the brain or some shit ... Me i want to take a 05 3.7l motor to a 04 limited body ..

Question.... What did you use as your lifting points on the engine? Im thinking of using the a/c compressor bolt hole but I'm not sure where to attach my chain on the rear side of the engine... Thanks

Well that’s definitely where you would put the front one near the air conditioner and the rear one would go on the backside of the driver side head If you remove the intake you would just use the intake Surface for removal either way works just fine

@@sharpcarco got it. I ended up hooking up to one of the alternator bolts and on the rear side to one of the ground strap mounting bolts

I have an engin issue, it's like it is out of time and the front spark plug prong was bent, do you think I need to replace the engin or is it fixable Thanks

Hard to tell over a text , if it was bent from a Valve seat (very common), just needs head fixed . If it happened because of a piston then may but almost anything can be fixed

I’m having a horrible time getting the torque converter bolts back on after install…. I can’t get the last bolt lined up 3/4 are on any tips PLEASE I have been attempting for the past 2 days.. I don’t get it. The other 3/4 bolts are barely threaded is this something to do with the flywheel having to line a notch up with the TC? HELP please 🙏

Loosen the other Bolts then start all the bolts before you tighten any of the bolts I promise they will all go in

OK so does your torque converter turn? With the engine and Transmission connected together? If not that’s your problem. Of course if you have the right torque converter. If your torque converter does not spin then your torque converter is not installed onto the transmission properly. When an engine and transmission is connected together the torque converter should always spin or have a very very little resistance you should be able to spin it with your finger. Or maybe just a little bit of effort with some kind of a screwdriver or something.

@@sharpcarco I just got it installed 🙂😤 thanks for the fast replies…. I restarted the bolts and went in opposite sides starting the bolts.. starting one and then jumping to the opposite side instead of starting all the bolts in a sequence. While making sure the very first bolt was as straight as an arrow on the TC Still not sure was causing it to misalign but I think it was the TC just not able to line up with the flywheel or maybe it was just me learning idk. Really strange the TC was real easy to spin with my fingers so I’m sure i correctly put it on

Hey Clay ,Bill here ,great video ,very helpful my question is I am pulling a seized motor on a 2011 jeep liberty 3.7 v6 I have everything unbolted except for the torque converter bolts .. The engine is seized solid and only able to remove one torque converter bolt I tried freeing it up by removing the plugs and put a breaker bar on 21mm bolt on the crank still will not budge either way?? My question is i was told pulling the engine with the torque you can damage the seal in the trans ?? I am a backyard mechanic have done several engine swaps but never pulled an engine with the torque converter attached any ideas or suggestions?? The truck only has 65,000 miles on it very clean and maintained when I pulled the plugs I saw the number two cylinder looked like it was hit and the number 4 cyl had anti freeze on it..

Whenever i have a siezed engine i use a pipe wrench to force the engine to turn to get the torque converter bolts out. Another thing i learned was to loosen the caps on the crank to allow movement to remove the bolts

Any tips for the top 4 bolts on the bell housing the top 2 i see no way to remove without removing the intake then the next 2 on top sides any tips to get those out as the wiring and not much room ?? thanks for any tip!

@@sharpcarco Thanks i removed intake the other 2 top ones by the wire harness are tough to get any tips to get those out underneath is only way i can really get to them but not much room also does transmission support have to be loosened at all to seperate engine from trans thanks your awesome!

Were are good mounting point in pulling the 3.7l motor . I have a bolt at the front that I think I can use for one location by using a nut on it it comes off the alt and sticks out about 2". But not seeing a rear location for a mounting point. Should I use that bolt in the front or find a better one to use. Video does not show what used and location.

You can either use where the intake was bolted to the engine or you can use the ground strap bolting on the backside of the cylinder head. If I remember right the bolts are either eight or 10 mm thread But there should’ve been a ground strap back there so just get a little bit longer bolts and bolt it to the head

A lot of the liberties it’s difficult to get the engine out with the intake on that’s why I mentioned that but if you are removing it obviously you can bolt it from the rear of the driver side head and the front of the passenger side head . ok, done my motor swap, got it in and hooked up been driving my 04 limited, just done a 2.5" lift on it as well .. And i forgot something to tighten down, a freakin motor mounting point on drivers side. the mounts is in place and tighten down, but the damn bolt that goes thru and really holds the motor to the frame, that i need to tighten down, it is a 4 wheel drive, so finding a cheat to get my hand up in there so`s that i get a wrench on it. got any tips or tricks on how i can get to that bolt with out removing anything ? Drivers side ..

There’s actually really easy ways to get up in there but you have to get up in there from the bottom. It looks like it’s impossible but there’s definitely a simple way to do it I think reaching your hand from around the front of the differential maybe I just can’t remember off the top of my head sorry.

The bellhouse bolt 2 bolts up from the top starter bolt. Did you get it out from the bottom or top? It's blocked by the harness atm

You move the harness out-of-the-way and you remove the intake that will allow you to get to the two top bell housing bolts

@@sharpcarco I tried and tried. The egr housing is in the way on the top. I finally got it with a stubby flexhead wrench from the bottom.

I’m looking for a 3.7 for a 2008 commander I was told by my local scrap yard that I can only use an 08 3.7. Is that true? Couldn’t find anything online

My guess would be that the oil pan is different. Or possibly the intake but you can buy just about any 3.7 made after 2004 switch the parts over and make it work. Your 2008 is going to have an EGR valve so you wanna make sure that you have the cylinder head that has the EGR valve on the backside. Actually I’m doing one at this minute. Top bolts are 14 mm Bottom bolts are 15 mm and there’s one 16 mm. I believe that 16mm was on the starter side if I remember correctly

And then the one on the starter side that’s closest to the EGR valve I got with a very very long set of extensions going from the transfer case up to the bolt from the bottom but it may be possible to get it from the top of it didn’t have a stinking ground ……connected to it I liked when they put the grounds on the back of the heads opposed to putting them on the stinking bell housing

On a crown vic the theft light flashes with key on could it be it just needs a key reprogrammed

More than likely the wires in the steering column are broken. Not allowing it to send a signal to the BCM

@@sharpcarco it shut off going down the highway and if you put power to wire from the fuse box to the starter it will crank

Yes it will and if you jumped power to the injectors I believe it should start depending on what year it is so you would have to jump the starter and the injectors at the same time because the security shut off the injector flow and I believe possibly the fuel pump as well but the problem is in your steering column so if you replace the steering column using the same lock cylinder so you can use the old key it should work

From turning the ignition it breaks the little wires that tell the BCM that the key is in the ignition so the Bcm doesn’t see the key so then it turns on security theft lock and will not turn over or start

I had to replace my transmission at only 48,000 miles. The KK has a not so good transmission. I currently have 83,000 miles, the Jeep runs great.

Hey Francisco I’m certain anything is possible if you set your mind to it is there any value in it that I don’t know about. It would certainly be a cool project and also a lot of work. And to be honest with you I think just about any Toyota platform would be better than the current jeep platform as far as off-road performance. As far as I’m concerned jeeps are a joke nowadays. Oh that, it’s going to get me some heat from the Jeep people!!!!

@@sharpcarco hehe,ik just was asking bcuz my wife loves how the jeep its and all but if it had a reliable engine it would last long,rn the jeep has 117,560 miles on it,running great,but we talking about getting 2 Toyota sequoias instead,invest that money into fixing thing I'm the interior of the sequoias instead,better investment

Yeah I totally understand where you’re coming from I wish they were more reliable vehicles because they have a great look to them. And that would be a very cool project like I said before maybe I will tackle that job someday that’s actually not a bad idea

What engine displacement do you have in there? If you have the four-point no you can only get it out of the 2011 and 2010 Dodge Nitro Looks like they’re anywhere from $1200-$2300 used Unfortunately I’m not super familiar with the 4.0 but I did use the Hollander index which is like the Bible of used auto parts. And it says that it will only work from the Dodge Nitro but I’ll also say from experience if they put a 4.0 in anything else you would just have to switch over parts from your old engine to the new engine If you have the 3.7 then you can get that from just about anything and switch over the parts jeeps Dodge Durango‘s etc. etc. anything that had the 3.7 and it would be just about the same other than switching some parts over from one engine to the other the cylinder heads and the block would be the same be something like the intake may be different it would probably have to be a post 2009 3.7 because they did change the EGR valve on the older ones. But for the most part as far as I Know that they are pretty much the same

Getting the intake off can be difficult I’ve seen guys cut into the upper support where the Windshield wipers are. We don’t hardly ever have issues getting intakes off. But I’ve heard that’s a problem for some

You need to tell people the secret of hanging engine from motor hoist, snugging chain up, taking out bottom 2 motor mount bolts, and then lowering motor all the way down before removing intake manifold. Without motor mount bolts in, the engine will go about 3 inches or so LOWER than its normal position. Making removal of intake a BREEZE!!!

I certainly would’ve told people that secret but I didn’t know that secret till about three months ago and I haven’t made a video sense LOL But the next time I put a motor in one of these and I have that problem I’m going to make a new video and show them

I disagree with you ….. it is always better to repair something that is to replace it…. Obviously there’s situations where it does not make sense because of time. Rock auto has done a brilliant job of millions of Chinese parts without having to have any infrastructure that employs Americans so keep pushing their products….. all the money they would be paying Americans is the money that they pay for advertising yeah certainly it goes into the American infrastructure but all of their profits go back to China….

Well maybe , and technically it should but it would have to be programmed to that vehicle and the BCM would have to be matched as well along with the instrument cluster. Let me know how that turns out the reason that the engines are different is because of the reluctor ring in the bottom of the engine that picks up the ignition timing

Unplug your cam sensor and see if it will start underneath the passenger side head

Do you JUST know from memory, where all of these parts go when you put the new engine back in. AND, how much would a job like this cost? Your videos are always interesting to me.

Most engine swaps are anywhere from about 600 to 1500 depending on where you take it to yes I do generally remember where all the stuff goes from memory. But we do a lot of engine swaps that we’ve never actually worked on them vehicles before they’re pretty much all the same. Manufacturers nowadays make vehicles to be kind of what I call “modular” meaning as they go up and down the assembly line they fit together like a puzzle so say you are taking the wiring harness off while the wiring harness lays on the engine in such a way it’s difficult to not have it on there properly because it will only fit one way correctly this does make things less complicated. we were in the Center of the frame up like you’re getting the starter out for the rear nut And went from the front to hold the bolt With an extension and a socket if I remember correctly

We just removed the center through bolt on drivers side. Pass side plate had to be removed.

Not in this video I did not say but in several other videos I did the engine was bad it had a broken connecting rod if it had bad timing or bad head gaskets I would’ve took it apart inside the vehicle this particular vehicle almost put me out Business

Thanks clay I have an 04 I can get that has no rust. They guy got the engine to crank after putting a braker bar and I think he had to roll it back the it crank and stopped right away. He said he hears something in the oil pan like a bolt or something. Would it be worth 600. and hauling it 4 hours to try to get it running?

Well unfortunately they’re not gonna get that engine running..... end it would be an absolute waste of money to try to get that particular engine running it needs a different engine. If you buy a used one I highly recommend taking the front cover off and replacing all of the timing at the very least these are known for timing issues., I just did timing chains and brand new hands on a guys last week for right around 2600 a new engine from us parts and labor removal and installation would be right around 32 to 3600 depends on what other things would be needed. A used engine somewhere between $1500-$2000 and then it would need new timing Removal and installation of the old engine would be right around $800 plus fluids. If you weren’t gonna go with a new engine Hopefully that gives you an idea of what you should end up paying

Now my show is filmed at a engine remanufacturing shop and we pull about three or four of them a week we have never pulled the bodies off of them..... I have no earthly idea why you would think that would be easier but to each their own. Good for you great job have a good day
