The blade won't lift up. We discovered the cable unit needs seals and better clutches in order to work properly.

I can tell that this is the first time you have had a CCU apart. I have repaired them several times as my Dad and I ran a whole fleet of Cats with cable scrapers and still do. If you need to know anything about them, ask me and I will answer your question to the best of my ability.

Hello Ty, I pulled the cable out of my CCU. I need to know how to get the reel to release, so I can pull the cable out and re-thread it through the pulley system. Can you please direct me to some instruction for this? Thank you!

How do you know it's the first time ? Just because it wasnt done with fancy tools or 7 or 8 people standing around supervising ?

Out of pure curiosity, where do you find parts for these old machines? Does CAT still make them for machines this old?

not much from cat! The new generation has no respect for this stuff.the multidisc cly=utches can be torn out of an old one and you simply add one,like on steering clutches....im about ot tear into one and put 2 together! im not looking forward to it!

Killer 120 what happens with those D8s is the steering clutch discs seize together when they have been sitting. To fix them is start your Cat put it in low gear and forward pulling both steering clutches right back. Then plant your dozer in the ground and if your Cat stops, you have solved your problem. I'm not sure what to tell you about converting your Cat to a hydraulic dozer. I personally wouldn't recommend it. I don't think the 2Us ever had hydraulic dozers. They are a different design than a 14A and the hardnose won't work certainly not without serious modifications. You will have to go to a front mount pump as 2Us which have the D13000 have no accessory drive.

How easy is it to get parts for that old rigging these days?

What are you talking about rigging? You mean how hard to get wire rope? Could you be more specific?

What are all the plates for? Is that what you would call a multi plate clutch?
@tyfrank3427
@tyfrank3427 7 жыл бұрын
altractors I guess you can call them that. They use the same clutches as the D7 steering clutches but not as may. The Cat CCUs use 13 discs. 7 fibre discs with external teeth which drive the drum and 6 steel discs which drive off the spider and run all the time. You can usually put an extra worn fibre disc on the inside as a spacer and get more life out of them that way. The pressure plate is engaged by a multi start thread that puts pressure on the pressure plate engaging the clutch. When you take both sides of a unit apart you need to take care as those as well as the drums are left and right. I have never operated a cable dozer but pulled cable scraper for many years and I was the one who fixed and kept the CCUs going all the time. As for cable scrapers, I by far prefer them over hydraulic.

I aint never used grease an not got it all over the place
@tyfrank3427

DirtPoorPlowBoy, that's an oil seal that's leaking. Me personally, I would much rather buy grease than bearings. On A D8 and a cable scraper, I pump a tube of grease in total in the bearings and other moving parts daily guess what, 60 year old cable scrapers run with just as few problems as modern hydraulic scrapers as a result of it.
