Interesting Ryan---good points about the gear.Even when your Mom and I took the surf fishing class we needed waders to stay dry. I had 2 pair so could share but they were not sized properly or fitted well. If your not warm and dry when fishing you could end up truly being miserable. Keep up the good work--- Question- Do you eat fish after seeing all the critters you catch?

Oh yeah, really all we catch is salmon when we fish, there’s no much by-catch at all, the occasional flounder but that’s all. I definitely still eat fish but I much prefer salmon now, but nothing is the same as fresh salmon eaten right after it’s caught

I just filled out an application for Silver Bay 4 days ago... they email me back today for my phone interview tomorrow from the videos I've been watching lately it looks like I'm going to knick knack Alaska your videos are inspiring to me keep it going bro!😎 would love to get on a fishing vessel boat and work as a processor or deckhand I heard they make a little more cash?

I'm glad to offer a bit of inspiration for your adventure :) it can be daunting, but I'm glad to give you the inspiration and info to help. But yeah, deckhands definitely make a bit more cash than in the processor, typically you've got to put a season in at the cannery before you're free to hop on a boat, the fishermen typically won't snag crew from the cannery because it's an unspoken agreement that the canneries will treat a boat right if they don't steal their employees. Put the work in for a season then try hopping on a tender, a gillnetter, or a seiner!

awesome information man!! I was wondering if you’d recommend buying gear down in the lower 48 or just wait until I get to a marine supply store up there in Alaska?
@RTLivingFree
@RTLivingFree 4 жыл бұрын
Zachary Wilton great question my dude, I would buy it up in AK at a marine supply store for 2 reasons, 1) you’re gonna get a better price at the marine supply store And 2) that stuff is bulky, it’s not easy to travel with. In my 70L backpack my fishing gear alone took up 1/3 of my backpack. It will be much easier to travel there and buy it so it takes up less space in your baggage

Rye n Tea awesome, thank you man!!! One more question! Maybe you can do a video on it even, but I was wonder what is nice to wear underneath all that gear??
@RTLivingFree
@RTLivingFree 4 жыл бұрын
@@zacharywilton3377 that is a great idea for a video actually... i think i might do that, but here's what i recommend I only wear synthetic martial under my raingear. Things like nylon or polyester, never cotton. Cotton hold on to moisture and makes you colder, synthetics get wet and dry faster and also insulate you better while they are wet. I'd wear a pair of hiking pants that are not cotton and a long sleeve synthetic top like underarmour. Although you may get funny looks if you're wearing super athletic clothes, you don't want to dress like a city kid if you want to fit in, but at the same time it doesn't really matter what you look like in the end. It's more about if you're a good worker and a good crewmate. So, long story short, long sleves, long pants, no cotton, and have at least 2 pair of work clothes. You will be re-wearing clothes before they get a chance to get washed. Embrace it and you'll have a much easier time. Bring baby powder, dry baby powder showers were my hygiene routine for months when I couldn't shower or do laundry Also, have a lot of socks. You'll want a lot of socks

Rye n Tea alright thank you again man, polyester like dry fit cloths and stuff and could you recommend me a brand for hiking pants? Thanks again my man I can’t wait to see that video 🙏🏻 haha I work on a ranch man so I reuse the same ragged up clothes almost everyday until Sunday so I’m prepared for that, I’m definitely not worried about how I look because I’m a hard worker no doubt.

@@zacharywilton3377 yup! dry fit clothes do the trick. As far as brand recommendations I wouldnt do anything very expensive, you will tear through whatever you buy so best to save the money and make it something cheap but comfortable enough. Part of why I would go with something cheap is because the expensive stuff is made to be super comfortable and last a long time. But when you're wearing your fishing gear you will be rubbing and your pants and shirt inside of a rain jacket in ways it wasn't made for, and you'll be sweaty and your clothes will want to stick to you and they will pull at the seams. Expensive gear is great when you use it for what it's made for, but few people make clothes for commercial fishermen. I would check out Grunden's though. They may have layers that can help you, especially raingear. You'll see a lot of Grunden's raingear out there

Great question my man, I would want to have 5k as a safety cushion that you hopefully don’t need to spend, To be transparent about my financing of this excursion, I made 2.5k in the cannery and I showed up pretty much flat broke. I moved to a fishing town shortly after my contract ended and I spent that money in about a month, food costs are expensive and if you need connectivity you might be paying to be in a restaurant or cafe for WiFi. You’ll also spend money for entertainment more than you expect. If you’re planning on tenting up, you’ll want to either find a tent city or commune, like Hippie Cove, Cordova.or pay for a campsite in a trailer park like in Whittier. Otherwise you’ve got to figure an alternative out yourself but be mindful of bears because they are real and lethal. If you don’t understand basic camping in bear territory I would get educated and practiced first

Hey man :) i know almost everything about this job and i want to ask you something. Do you know about anybody that is from country that needs VISA for working on boat. i am from Slovakia and i want to have a job like this only problem is that i will need VISA to have permision to do that work. Do you have any expierence about fishing companies that provides visa to foreign employees/job seekers? Cause what i know many fishing companies dont want to provide visa (I mean Seattle) have a good day :)
@RTLivingFree
@RTLivingFree 4 жыл бұрын
I'm sad to say this, but I think the best thing you can do is get a work visa :/ It's very risky not to. I'll explain ,my reasoning though. In Alaska, where I have worked, the fishermen who are out aren't typically "companies." They are all their own individual business. Small boats like seiners and gillnetters are typically run by between 1-4 fishermen, and they work for themselves and sell their fish to a seafood processor. They all need to account for their spending on their taxes so if they have an immigrant without a work visa working for them they will need to do some legally questionable things to balance their books when tax season comes around. Each boat being their own business means that each captain will handle the situation differently. It is possible you can land on a boat that will pay cash and not acknowledge that you are illegally working, but you will not be receiving any insurance from your captain. You would also have trouble getting a fishing licence because you need ID to get one. In theory, if a captain were willing to take crew without a licence, you have a chance. I would say its a slim chance and a risky move. Even if you were able to land on a boat, it likely wouldn't be a very great fisherman. The best fishermen I know take risks, but not legal risks. Hate to say it, but I think the best thing you could do is get a work visa. I know how long it can take, but it is the safest and most profitable thing you can do looking for work in AK. :/

@@RTLivingFree I almost forgot to ask you on this :) Do you have any exprierences with fishing company OceanPeace? Its in Seattle and many those who dont have permission to work in US work for this company. Do you know this company, esp. Seattle fishing companies, hiring etc. Thank for you answer :)
@RTLivingFree
@RTLivingFree 4 жыл бұрын
Tomáš Franek I don’t know that company, I never worked in Seattle personally, buuuuuut in the seafood processing industry you might find a lot of people who may or may not be working in the US legally. I never asked questions of the foreigners I worked around, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there was leniency with the companies. It can’t hurt to ask around and see what companies will and won’t do for foreigners, but at the end of the day working without a visa still puts a lot of risk on the worker
