Catz was developed by PF Magic, and released in 1996 after its sister game Dogz the previous year - both were distributed by Virgin.
It's a sort of advanced screensaver for Windows. I used to waste hours playing it when I was little and I have no idea how. There's not much to it.

Gotta love the '90s obsession with mispelling things, it it wasn't replacing the S with a Z, it was changing C to a K. Then again, we had L337 spelling to look forward to a few years later. God, I'm pleased that internet fad died!!!

I loved the concept of the animals living on your desktop, by the time I got my own computers they only worked within their own program which to me was stupid... The whole point to me was like them running about in the background while you were trying to study.

I had Dogz 1 on release, got this from the PC section in Debenhams of all places. Something I kinda liked was that it included a "pet adoption" system whereby you could make an authorised copy to and let your friends try it out too. Shades of the old shareware system and also reinforcing your observation of "procrastination tool for adults" if you imagine this being copied through an office

I had so many pet games on pc back in the day, catz, dogz, cyberpest, creatures, oddballz, 3d pets and more, I loved them and still do. It's weird that I was planning to record a catz review this month ha ha, I think I'll hold on a bit longer now 😂

I had Petz 3 and 5. For years I had a Manx named Mel in the game. He had jeans and a little cowboy hat. I transferred him from 3 to 5 so it was a good many years. When I stopped being able to play the game, I really missed him. I use to use my laptop for notes in college and I'd have my catz playing in a small screen in the corner. Helped me concentrate because they were a distraction.

I have 5 cats that lay around over my desktop and keyboard. Maybe I should have just bought a copy of this :). But I did buy dogz for myself in 1995 from Virgin megastore, then got told off for loading it on my work PC at my first job.

Hmm, I wonder how they marketed these things in Germany, given that the German for cats is 'katzen'. Katzenz? Or would they switch it up and call it 'Katsen'?
