Did you find old non-stick baking sheets in your cupboard? What other toxic items/products have you found in your home? Is there anything you are concerned about and looking to switch out for something more safe & non-toxic? If so, what is it?

I read an article that if you use silicone in your baking tools, including parchment paper, that as soon as it hits 200 degrees it’s leaching out a chemical called siloxane that is very toxic. Have you heard this?

I want stainless I heard they warp all the time. So I'm looking into all clad or something like that.. It's really a shame that all these companies are not putting their heart into making these products excellent.

Stay away from aluminum pans as well, like Nordic Ware! I just threw out 2 of those pans because, when I buttered them, silver metal came off! I found an old nonstick pan like that too. I put all 3 on the table for my hubby to carry out with the trash. Unbeknownst to me, my cleaning lady placed them in my over. Later, I heated my oven and noticed smoke. I opened my oven and saw a ball of white smoke rising and it hit me in the face. I got Teflon flu and was sick for 2 days! It is only stainless steel non-coated pans for me now! Please leave the aluminum pans alone as well! I saw the silver metal coming off!

Cast iron is the best if you want non stick. I have a lodge skillet, griddle, and baking pan. The griddle is what I use for eggs, breaded chicken, pancakes, etc. The skillet is for deep dish pizza and cornbread. The baking pan is for roasting vegetables, general baking, and cookies. After a few uses they become 100% nonstick. Lodge is good quality, made in USA, and cheap. I also have an all clad frying pan that I use for acidic foods so I don’t strip the seasoning off the cast iron. I couldn’t imagine baking cookies or frying eggs on stainless steel. Sticks on like glue. Cast iron is the best, or if you want lighter weight and faster heating/cooling, then get carbon steel like restaurants use. That’s also nonstick once seasoned.

Is it still safe for me to use my nonstick sheets as long as I don’t cook directly on top of them, and instead use the parchment paper to protect food from sitting directly on the nonstick sheet? I’m just now seeing info that using aluminum foil in the oven leeches bad chemicals in the food. Whats this about? Is this true? Then when DO you use foil? Is it okay to wrap food in parchment paper then foil? This is all new to me.

Great suggestion on the baking sheets ... My Mom and I try this and that to "replace" the "old" PFOAs, but I have stayed to busy to follow my hunch, (to look on the internet--lol !), surely there 's such thing(s) as stainless steel bake pan. Whew!

Great video! Just some feedback, the link you shared of “all clad” has an aluminum core when you look deeper into its pictured description. There’s always something in the advertising of course! The other 2 cookie sheets you posted look great and I’m considering getting them as long as they’re 100% SS Thank for the valuable information
@joshmiller2725
@joshmiller2725 8 ай бұрын
I don’t think the aluminum core is a problem. All of my stainless pots and pans are either all clad or cuisinart multiclad pro. The aluminum is sandwiched between 2 layers of stainless. It is only exposed around the lip of the pan and never comes In contact with food.

Hi Matthew, I do actually have two videos out on cast iron. Here is my playlist. kzfaq.info/sun/PLhE076JnWJGt_5ujwyztCqeXkPRU7wsHM As far as I know the pre-seasoning on cast iron is totally safe. It is essentially oil and is created in a similar way to how you would season it at home. I will double-check on that though and get back to you if I get any more information. Thank you for your great question! Glad you are a part of this Natural Living Community! 🙏😊

I'm right with you, just starting to learn about nontoxic cookware, this is so confusing for me 😫 so I also found out that stainless steel has to be nickel free, have you found a brand of stainless steel that you would recommend?
@NaturalLivingwithZenana
@NaturalLivingwithZenana 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Belen! I know! I was confused too. I even bought cookware with non-stick without even knowing it. I used it for two whole years before I figured it out. 😲 As far as the stainless steel - it is made with an alloy of chromium and nickel. They can leach a little bit of the metal but for most people this is totally fine. If you have been tested and high heavy metal levels then this may be of concern but otherwise it's not a problem. You can also look at the numbers on the cookware. They relate to the grade of stainless steel and will read 18/10 or 18/8. This refers to the amount of chromium and nickel (respectively) in the cookware. If you are worried about the nickel then maybe look for the ones in which the second number is smallest. The baking sheets I refer to in this video are actually 18/0 so no nickel at all. Yay! Try them out and let me know what you think. So far they have been great for me!

how about using silicone mats... those can be washed and reuse?
@NaturalLivingwithZenana
@NaturalLivingwithZenana 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, Silicone mats can be ok as long as you are not cooking at super high heat. Also, silicone is not recyclable at this point so if you invest in a mat you just want to be sure you plan to use it for a very long time. Otherwsie, it's like any other non-recyclable item - garbage. Those are the only two concerns with silicone. Hope that helps!

So what happens if the silicone parchment paper goes over 425-degrees? Sounds like that might be an issue too?
@NaturalLivingwithZenana
@NaturalLivingwithZenana 4 жыл бұрын
Good question Chris! While it should be safe to use parchment paper at higher temperatures it may get brittle and even burn. You may notice the paper turning brown or even black. It is not likely to combust but it could. The brittle flakes could also get into your food. At temperatures higher than 450 degrees the silicone coating may release siloxanes which are a bi-product of the silicone and these siloxanes can be hormone disruptors. I hope that helps answer your question!
