Obtaining good quality art supplies is crucial to creating good quality art. The saying, "The bitterness of low quality lingers longer than the sweetness of low price," truly applies to paint, brushes and paper. In this brief studio visit, I will share my favorite art brands with you and show you how my studio space is set up.

Oh, thank you so much for this video! And huge thanks to your daughter for suggesting it! So very very helpful to see what tried and true art supplies could be. Very often artists and companies promote expensive products, that not everyone can buy, but newbies convinced that they should obtain them in order to get better. All your tips and suggestions are so kind and helpful. So grateful that I found you and your videos. Capturing the light in such a way - is just amazing. I love watching your videos, it's like a dessert for me! Love the closing quote.

Thank you Laurel for this tour of your beautiful studio. What a glorious space to create art! I have been subscribed to your channel and have benefited from your wisdom and skill but had never gone back to view this older video. What a very helpful and down to earth guide to basic requirements. I appreciate that you have guided artists to products (brushes in particular) which are excellent quality but not extravagantly expensive. A fabulous handmade sable brush is a thing of beauty and an object of wonderful craftsmanship, but it is not necessary to produce a beautiful watercolour painting! You demonstrate that so well! Thank you also for your quiet faith and assurance. It is balm in a world where everything is loud and feels like a sales pitch from a shady used car dealer! 😵‍💫 Most of all, thank you for sharing the beautiful quote at the end. I hope it is cited in the notes as I would very much like to post it in my workspace. Such blessed and wise advice in a world now so changed by pandemic, anxiety and, well, rage. I apologize for the loooong comment, but I wanted to let you know how much watching this simple video has helped me today in ways far beyond choosing my paper! Bless you Laurel, and keep the faith!

Hi! Love your work and as a new, though old!, watercolor painter I really appreciate that you wonderful artists take the time to teach us. One thought I wish to share though and that relates to the toxic chemicals in some of the professional paints. Eating paint is not the concern as the pro paints are very costly and I imagine we all keep them from children, but rather it is the environmental impact. As a farmer this is an issue near and dear to my heart. Waste paint and dirty wash water ends up in land, tiny amounts from each of us using them, but every bit adds up. Changing our mindset to be considering environmental impact is a gift we can give our grandchildren, along with beautiful art. We have an organic farm in a rural area. Our water cones from a well, waste water goes into a septic tank with liquids exciting into a leach field on land elevated over pastures and spring ponds that feed our animals and wildlife. This direct connection we have here to the land means we are in touch with the need to help protect our natural resources. I think that folks who live in suburbs and cities may not as easily realize the impact of their choices on the environment, yet, due to the greater population, they actually impact the environment in a huge amount. Imagine having that large population become sensitive to how their choices affect the land, imagine how this would be such a gift to future generations. Perhaps you could consider this aspect when choosing paints with toxic ingredients particularly since now we have such gorgeous choices in paints that do not contain dangerous substances such as in the heavy metals cadmium and manganese for instance but offer wonderful options for very similar colors. This comment is sent with the utmost respect for you and your work.
@laurelhart2183
@laurelhart2183 6 жыл бұрын
Oh my goodness!! This is an issue I have never even considered! What an eye opening comment that makes perfect sense. Thank you for enlightening me and I’m sure many others. Do you have more information on which paints, besides the cadmium that we should be careful with? And how should they be safely disposed of?
@farmwife7944
@farmwife7944 6 жыл бұрын
California has the tightest regulations and paints are noted as regulated/restricted in that state (along with a few other states). If you look at art catalogs (I have the big one from Blick's) they note all that info by each paint to help direct your purchases. As far as disposal, treat them as toxic chemicals. Most areas have times and locations when you can drop off toxic stuff like paints, drugs, empty cans of bug spray, whatever. Ask at your town hall to connect you with whatever department handles that be it the town dump or even your private garbage company may have the info. You can dump your wastewater from painting into a container and label it as toxic chemicals and they will dispose of them in a manner that either detoxifies them or puts them into environmentally safe containers (not the best options but at least they are not all over the place). I do know those containers are widely used since I know the family that has the privilege of still receiving the proceeds from the government and private purchases as their grandfather invented those containers for radioactive and environmentally and personally dangerous contents. Those containers are sending their kids to college and purchasing their middle class style homes. They do not support a lavish lifestyle but still, they are going to good use. Thanks for your kind sensitive response.

I found your channel while browsing and really enjoy your work. I have been an artist most of my life, not professionally but mainly for my own pleasure. I watched this video this morning and found your down to earth explanation of your materials and work so refreshing. Having been involved with the art community over the years I'm sorry to say that there seems to be a lot of snobbery and egotism. I loved seeing your studio! What a neat story behind the building. Your daughter was correct. Many of us enjoy and learn from seeing studios. I fell in love with yours immediately!! I wish I would have seen this before I bought my watercolor supplies. I spent too much on brushes. I can understand how "special" it is to you. I paint at home. I've been doing oils but had to change to watercolor. I've fallen in love!!Im not a professional and have had no training. Isn't God good to have given us our love of painting? It's my "Calgon, take me away". I hope you remember that commercial..lol I don't think of anything when I paint. I'm in process of getting place set up in our new smaller house. I've missed it!!# Thanks again! Your paintings are beyond beautiful!!

A good video, thanks. If you are looking for a good quality and affordable paper I would recommend Saunders Waterford 200lb (400gsm) cold pressed (NOT). It’s available in a standard off white and a high white in imperial size sheets, HP NOT and Rough. Have found this to be a good all rounder, heavier than 140lb and not as expensive as 300lb it is moderately sized and will take lifting out, scratching out etc... well. Before anyone asks I am not sponsored by the manufacturer, I just like the product.

What a Lovely video! Thank you for showing us your personal space and tools. I just recently discovered the Winsor and Newton paper and fell in love instantly! It is such a robust paper. I replaced my Arches with it even. I was tickled to find out that my palette and yours are very similar. The transparent red iron oxide is one of my favorite colors, and especially the one from M. Graham, which is my go to brand for most of my palette, aside from the manganese. I adore the version from Winsor and Newton. I also have the Mission Gold version as it is just Manganese and not a hue. I also have the white gouache, and the way I see it, if it was good enough for the masters then it is good enough for me, and I don't think it's cheating at all. I think you are a wonderful artist and I really enjoy your beautiful style. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your time, wisdom, and amazing talent with us. You have such a please by speaking voice that makes it very easy to pay attention to and learn from. Thank you. Blessings to you and yours, with Much Love and Respect from your fan in North Carolina, Stacy

thank you, great to see your set up :) question: would like to know what camera you use, just your phone?I do alot of small close up detailed colored pencil works of flowers and leaves and then larger watercolor paintings of lights /shadows, still life, figure, animals, landscape...I need something that can zoom close up and catch tiny waterdroplet detail on a petal and also zoom for far off water spray of a wave hitting a rock. interested because I picked up art again after many years and still have an old school 35 mm. comment: Please research cell phone proximity and cancer, I dont carry a cell phone or hold it close to my ear or body if I can help it, girls who carry their cell phones in their bras have increase risk of breast cancer, professionals who are on their phone alot have increased cases of brain cancer. its a good thing you dont like to stare at a computer screen for your reference pics as the blue light kills DHA and melatonin through your eye, disrupts circadian rhythm and hormones and causes eye issues.

Hi Laurel - wanted to mention one more thing ... if you ever run out of your W&N paper supply (God forbid it never happens) & you wish to try out something else - may I suggest you try out the Canson & Montval Cold pressed 300 gsm (140 lb) paper ... it also has a nice tooth & do not buckle much with water. I have found it to be excellent. And since I have a difficult name, I'll perfectly understand if you do not want to use it :))

Thanks a lot for so many useful details. One specific question about your palette. Obviously this is a plastic palette but somehow your paints seem to move very smoothly in the mixing area without contraction and beading up. How do you process the surface to achieve that without creating problems with staining? Thanks!
@laurelhart2183
@laurelhart2183 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ted. I think it kind of builds up the ability to resist beading after use for awhile. I just wipe it out with wet paper towel and I haven’t really had much problem with staining. I avoid Prussian Blue also!

Hello I am an artist who paints for pleasure and part of my enjoyment of doing art is ‘collecting art materials’. I am an art tool junkie 😊 I love collecting brushes, paints and professional watercolour paper and journals. I am in my element when I spend time looking at and materials in good art shops and looking at all the goodies in artists workshops. So, Big thank you for sharing this KZfaq of your studio, loved it 🌹

So enjoyed your art studio, art supplies & painting videos. I do have.some watercolor brushes from brands which are quite nice. Basically Synthetics. Watching your video I decided I’m going to order some of the loew Cornell ultra rounds. I don’t know if you are aware but you cannot find a #8. I don’t know why. I hope they are not discontinuing. Are you aware of this & do you possibly have any information about them. Thanks

Thank you, Laurel, for taking such care and time in explaining your art supplies. I have been learning to paint in watercolor for nearly 3 years and feel I am making progress, although I have gotten through a lot of paper (wasted)! Would you suggest for newbies such as myself, buying a less expensive paper to practice on? I tend to use the W & N Cotman range of paints as these are a little more affordable but occasionally I will treat myself to a Daniel Smith, just bought his Moonglow paint which is wonderful. I only have part of my dining room to paint in, but it is sufficient as I tend to paint smaller pictures and make cards for family and friends. I do believe there is a website called something like, 'paint my picture' which has photos that people submit and you can paint them without fear of breaking copyright rules. My gut feeling is that you are a wonderfully patient teacher - please move to the UK and my area!!

What a wonderfully kind comment! Thank you so much! I would love to move to the UK!! In regards to a cheaper paper, you won’t like my answer. I believe you will frustrate yourself with the student grade. The paint just doesn’t behave the same as it does on professional grade papers. Same for paints! So sorry! But if you have to use the student grade, keep going. It will make your advancement to the better supplies so much sweeter!

Totally disagree with student vs professional paints for beginners. In my experience Windsor and Newton Student grade paints behave the same way as their professional grade... they're not as pigmented, but that just means use more paint in the same amount of water. The only real difference I've found is student grade aren't as light-fast, which isn't a huge issue when you're learning. Given that professional grade paints cost at least 3 times as much as student grade...I think it's a waste of money when you're starting out.
