Painting a Glowing Portrait in Watercolor

A lot of painters are afraid to attempt portraits in watercolor because they're scared of panting people. But in reality, people don't have to be any scarier a subject than anything else if you simply copy the light and shadow patterns correctly. In fact it's the shadows cast by facial bones that really create a likeness, even more than the facial features. Flesh tones in watercolor are relatively easy to mix using a simple triad, and when applied cleanly they can achieve the effect of glowing skin like no other medium.

Yes,I agree with you about the highlight under the jaw. Again, it doesn't have to be exactly as the reference. I think the portrait is lovely and tender. A medal winner in my opinion.

I must comment again ! I am at 16:27 - it's already extraordinary - right here. You could leave it and fade the rest out - of course - that's my elementary school idea of how to do it fast - and not the truth - but it blows my mind every single time to watch you carve - it truly looks like you carve out images - adding just the right tiny spot of a little purple or orange or pink or yellow - will I ever be able to do this? !! I will try! You make it look easy - as you know- but I also know this is years and years of practice, practice, practice with many a "failed" painting attempts (to you) in the process of your artistic growth. That thought keeps me going!
@laurelhart2183
@laurelhart2183 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Angie! I love your heartfelt comments-I truly look at it as gaining the trust of your brushes and paints by allowing them to do their own thing and learning to let go. That’s when the magic happens-When you meet each other half way! Then your tools become your friends. A famous person said something that I think applies here in regards to his children-“I teach them correct principles, but then I let them govern themselves.” In other words, I give the pigments the water they need, the gravity they need, and the surface they need, (the right parameters), but then they are allowed to do what they do best with me trying to supervise! Ha ha-does that make sense?
@angiewillsonarte
@angiewillsonarte 4 жыл бұрын
@@laurelhart2183 Of course it makes sense! Control is a human issue - and necessary to lift off - to have an idea that our actions will result in a desired result...etc. Even with God as our ultimate Creator, to be human is to wish things would turn out how we wish them to. I am loving this life stage - control seems to be a necessary loss - and it's part of why I know my spirit was drawn to watercolor. Thanks again!!

I have done portraits in pencil and watercolor but have no training and was researching as I always do before bedtime and came upon your video. I have saved this for a reference. You said portrait and I get nervous, but the last five minutes I dont think I breathed too much. I think what I need to do is go on to sketchy and just work at it. This will be a good reference for the stages. I really like the side view with the back lighting. This would be a good place to start and just do some journaling for my eyes only and take the pressure off. Thank you for the video.

Hi again - it's your internet stalker and non stop talker - ha! I probably shouldn't type that - but I think you know me enough to get the joke. I'm an older former school teacher and counselor - I'm pretty safe:) I finally had the time to watch this entire video. I learned a lot! It may be my favorite of your lessons so far. I love doing portraits. A few comments/questions - if you have time..if not - ok too:) 1) I really enjoyed how you had to keep at it - even if it was a challenge- often -you say - try to get it all down in one wash - I know you mean this as a goal - not a rule. So, it was interesting to watch you go back over all of the outside w/ Mang. Blue...and then to do the value correct on her face - (I still struggle a lot with the orange parts of skin tone), and also the sleeves and the front of the jumper. I saw how you kept "correcting" - and one of my fears is over correcting. - but in a portrait - I've found that notion elusive - you have to correct often. 2) I liked seeing the violet - I think it's ultramarine violet - interesting - I don't have that color - but using that against the blonde hair - and then the yellow bush color - these choices really made her glow and pop - and it made sense to me thinking of my limited color theory understanding why you did this. 3) I can't criticize - I can only dream of doing this - but I kept thinking I was seeing a few pencil marks at the top of her bun and around it - this may have just been youtube seeing - I kept wondering - is she going to hit those pencil marks? You didn't - which again - may have been just what I saw via youtube and 4) I felt like the chin was really hard to do; I thought you were going to round it a bit or soften it- but I realize you are also having to make it pop - so I think you did a great job - and I realize no one would notice that but me. People do not look at every little thing like I do as I watch and learn! The overall effect is absolutely stunning - truly!! It takes a modern day image- (and the kids are all wearing the ruffles again - like we did in the 80s - we all had those dresses- my mom - age 45? back then had them - it a was what was in. She is 83 now - and it all comes around again as you know. ) and gives it an ethereal, timeless look - as if it could be from now or another century - that's my favorite part of your result - surely others also see this - and it is so hard to do and you pulled it off with your incredible gifts. Thanks for sharing. We are still out here - I hope one day to come to a workshop in person - we shall see. I am in the process of heading back east to be closer to my family - Boone, NC is an hour or so from them - lots of great workshops there as you know. But I'd come to Salt Lake one day - it'd be a dream come true and I know others on here would love it. And I also know you may never want to do it and that's ok too. But it could also bring some business to local sites, etc. -as you know. I have seen SLC twice - so so beautiful! Neice at UCLA in California, etc. - so it could be a visit to her too. ( as if this is all about ME!) I went to a great workshop in Stonington CT about an unrelated topic - I thought - how does this woman not fear who the heck shows up? But- she has done it for years and so far, so good. She is almost 80 now. This is inappropriate - rambling..but I just hope I get to meet you one day before we exit into the next realm. And, finally, your granddaughter has to love this - what a gift!! And, also - I just bit the bullet and bout the Lucy they advertise over and over during your videos. I can't wait - I am so ready to paint more and not spend hours and hours drawing. I think it'll take some practice to use it, but I'm ready t paint more family portraits, people at the beach, etc. Finally - you must watch "The Genius of Marion" on Amazon Prime - if you can handle it. It is also about Alzheimers - and it can been a hard topic for some of us - but the watercolor art of Marian Steele is simply not to be missed - I think you'd enjoy seeing what she did. Talk about gifted!!! Add it to your "to do " list:) ha! Take care Laurel - thanks again for sharing with us!! Not proofing this - hitting send:) Off to my never ending "to do "list:)

@@laurelhart2183 Well - you just never know. I hope so too. I sort of feel like in may ways - as a woman in my mid 50s - I am finally becoming more and more me - without apologies. I think many women of a certain age can related to that one. One never knows - but it wouldn't surprise me if we cross paths. If I am headed to L.A. or westward- I will try to make a stop in that beautiful city. I'd love to see your studio. I promise I would not take too much of your time. And, I have no idea when this might happen- or not. But - you never know. I never say never anymore:) I have always been interested in your religion. I hope this is not out of line - and I hope this is not too much of a "broad brush statement" - but honestly - many of my best students throughout my years teaching journalism were Morman. I had a dance teacher in my teenage years who converted. I do not plan to do so - I'll stick with United Methodist for now. But I love to study religions - another passion. My yoga teacher now is also Morman - was a dancer back in the day - studied at BYU, danced for American Ballet - she found yoga after she had her 8th child (!!!!) and was so anxious/depressed. Well - a few years later - and here she is teaching it - she's extraordinary. So - I just have such admiration for this determination I see. Again - a bit of the painting subject - but you do mention it in some of your videos - your work in Brazil, etc. Back to painting - I bought the Lucy - it's not easy to use - but I found it helpful in doing some outline work on a portrait. I'm glad I bought it - tool for the kit. But - honestly - most of the time I CAN draw - I just get lazy:) Take care. Keep youtube teaching on your plate if you can - no rush - at your pace. You have just helped me so much. I have your book -but a video is just an entirely different way to learn. Keep on Laurel! And God Bless! P.S. - yes to the ending quote - YES!!!

I finally had the time to watch The Genius of Marian, during the Corona Virus confinement. The paintings were truly amazing as you said. It was such a touching story and hard to watch such a beautiful person struggle with early Alzheimer’s. Thanks for your recommendation.

@@laurelhart2183 I just saw this - I've been busy doing a bunch of paperwork. I will definitely e-mail you. Glad you got to watch the "Genius" - it was just so beautifully done by her son - it astounded me really. The metaphor of the sand bridge going out to the little island and then only this moment when one could return...it reminds me of your painting - "when time stands still". It's about life - it goes so quickly - so much is out of our control. And - I knew you'd love seeing that watercolor work -Pam White's mother was given such a unique gift - her ability to see the world and almost magically capture a moment in time. I will e-mail you soon! I have to get this big project done by April 10 and then I will get my paints out - I had to literally force myself to put them away or I won't get this done! I'm addicted to my watercolor paints - I would dare say this watercolor thing that has captured my heart has been another salvation in my life. More in an e-mail - thanks Laurel!

This is a beautiful piece and the love you have for your granddaughter shines through. Absolutely wonderful video. Thank you for your generosity in sharing. I noticed you seem to rearrange your palette in many videos. Does this reflect additional colors you feel are useful for each painting?

Thank you Ginny! Mostly the colors stay the same. I have two identical palettes-one that I use at my studio and one that I use for filming. The colors may be arranged a little differently on the two, but they are usually the same pigments. One color that I did add for this demo was a purple for the flesh tones.

Great video! Inspired by your video, I painted my first portrait with facial details! I am thinking should I leave the background white or with some loose background wash... I am also considering should I only paint the background in specific places rather than the whole paint. How do we do the background? Is there any consideration? E.g. color, composition? Thank you!

@laurelhart2183 4 жыл бұрын
Cheung Dorothy I’m so glad you tried a portrait! If your portrait is in pretty sharp detail, I think a loose, soft background would set it off nicely. You might try wetting the paper behind the figure and floating the colors in so they don’t take away from the focus on your model. It’s often very striking to use dark colors around the face to set it off. As far as what colors to use, it’s nice to harmonize with what you’ve used in the figure, or go to the complementary colors to make it pop.

Hi Laurel - hope you are well! I have a banal question - I am on a tight budget - and I struggle much more with drawing than painting - I look at the EZ Tracer wall projector, the Lucida (sp), and inexpensive lightboards (I taught journalism back in the day - we had to use lightboard (expensive one) to cut and paste our Newpaper each moth - ancient! I am wondering to start - if I should go this route - enlarge a photo on a copy machine, then trace it using a lightboard- onto tracing paper? and then onto watercolor paper. These are 20 bucks. Or, the EZ Tracer at 60 bucks - will project onto a wall and then I could do outline work directly onto my watercolor paper - the reviews say it will only do a 4 by 4 images - strange. But will magnify up to 10 times. Yes, I can do grids, trace, etc. - I just find all this pretty tedious and I've done some good enough paintings of people even using my own eye to do the sketch - but it takes me forever. It discourages me - and I so want to paint. Any thoughts? Or other ideas - if more expensive, I can save up or ask for something as a gift. You may have already told me about this. If so - I apologize. I will now watch your video!! I trust your thoughts - as you know! You are helping so many of us out here and I thank you so very much!! You make a difference! You are spreading some joy!

Hi Angie! I have used a projector in the past and projected right on my watercolor paper, but I found it kind of cumbersome and time consuming to have to borrow it (from my son) and then set it up and all that. So my preferred method is a light board which I just keep set up all the time. It can only accommodate a quarter size sheet, but I have traced full size sheets just doing them a section at a time. I have also used one of those enlarging things but unless you have a really good one, they are not that helpful-and can’t enlarge clearly to a very big size. I have also just used the plain old sun coming through the window-tape the photo on the window and then your watercolor paper on top of it. That method only requires a bright sunny day and a large enough window pane. 😊

Thanks - a sunny window and use my watercolor paper - never even thought of that! I broke and bought a Lucy - we'll see. I've wanted it for so long - they advertise it over and over on your youtube videos - It was 120 bucks - maybe it'll help. But a sunny window - never even occurred to me. I am so tired of tracing, then rubbing the tracing, etc. - not for me. I actually did a free hand drawing of your grand daughter above - it's not bad - the painting is not great- but it's great practice. So - I guess I can draw when I put my mind to it:) That is not too hard to do compared to many others I've tried. It's patience - I need patience! Love this one. Thanks for the tips!

Can you answer a question for me? I've been reading Skip Lawrence's book , Painting Light & Shadow in Watercolor, and he refers often to using pure color or pigment, without defining exactly what he means. Does he mean right out of the tube? Primary colors? How basic is "pure color?" Aren't tube colors almost all mixtures? Your skin tone mixtures are lovely. I once made the mistake of using a tube of "flesh tome" that contained titanium white and ruined a portrait. When I tried to use the colors needed for shadow, it muddied and deadened the child in the painting.

Hello Laurel. I found your channel a couple of years ago when working more seroiusly with watercolour painting. I'm curious as to how you "traced" the image of your drawing from the photo onto your wc paper? I've come to your channel, recently, as I feel I've developed my skills and am ready to try painting people with your guidance. Thanks so much! :)

The Winsor Newton 140 lb. coldpress paper dries nice and flat if I have it taped to a board from the beginning. I just use regular masking tape and it is much easier than stretching paper.

@@laurelhart2183 I do that, as well. If my paper is still a little warped after it's dry, I iron it on the back side with a steam iron (I put a towel over the paper). Then, I lay my painting on a very flat surface with a heavy book on top.
