A lot of painters are afraid to attempt portraits in watercolor because they're scared of panting people. But in reality, people don't have to be any scarier a subject than anything else if you simply copy the light and shadow patterns correctly. In fact it's the shadows cast by facial bones that really create a likeness, even more than the facial features. Flesh tones in watercolor are relatively easy to mix using a simple triad, and when applied cleanly they can achieve the effect of glowing skin like no other medium.
