"Clint Eastwood only has two expressions: with the hat and without the hat." - Sergio Leone.

He was trying to keep himself memorable by not diluting himself into something too easily readable and understood. Leone's script originally had plenty of lines for him, and Eastwood methodically crossed most of them out. Even actors can know the power of pure film.

Some people thought Peter Jackson went overboard with some models ans stuff as some had to be removed after filming as it was a nature's reserve. The way I heard it? The graveyard existed for only one day. Also, the exploding bridge? Exploded twice. Thanks to them letting a military commander (they had some help from them and wanted to thank them for the help) give the order and him not understanding the movie jargon language prematurely gave the order. Thankfully nobody got hurt, but no camera was filming. So they rebuild the entire bridge just to blow it up again.

The emotional scene where Tuco meets his brother and then comes to the coach and starts making up how his brother loves him, to Blondie. What a classic scene. It moves me every time.
@dingfeldersmurfalot45602 жыл бұрын
Love it! And Blondie knew he was full of crap, but didn't say anything. Then after spewing baloney about brotherly love, Blondie passes him his cigarillo. That means everything. Tuco has his true brother. And there's a sudden light in his eyes again, a pulling himself up from the depths, the gleam of maniacal, devil-may-care energy we love so much in Tuco. I think this little scene and its emotional transitions in such a small space of time are tremendous, and very under-rated.

Definitely in my top 3, alongside Empire Strikes Back and The Dark Knight. Also, fun fact for Star Wars fans, many shots from this movie are paid homage to in the Star Wars movies. Most obvious is Han shooting Greedo, which is based on the scene where Tuco shoots the bounty hunter while in the bath. And as recently as TFA, we got Finn wandering through the desert then drinking the dirty water which parallels Tuco doing the same thing after Blondie leaves him.

This is such an amazing movie. I've watched it atleast 100x and never tire of it. I even wrote a 10pg report in college about how the movie was about Tuco and the professor had to see the movie after reading what I wrote and also fell in love with it. Eli was criminally in to few films.

kenchun24 It's both funny and informative. This move taught me at the age of six that I should never waste time talking if I think my enemy is cornered. The thing that always gets me when I watch that scene is that Tuco had his gun that whole time, but let the guy finish his gloating before he took the shot.

Interesting that this film is considered a western. It could have easily fit many genres, War film, action adventure, comedy and probably others. It's really a treasure hunting film, like Treasure Island or Radiers of the Lost Ark, or The Goonies. I'm not disagreeing that this film is a western, but it's really much more then just a western. It might also be the best film ever made in some of these other genres, not just western. It's not the best war film, but it might be the best treasure hunting film, though I think Treasure of the Sierra Madre, might beat it out. It is a brilliant film with equally fitting story, performances and music, and then the style of close up's mixed with horizon shots as near to perfect as a film can be.

The scene with the Union Captain explaining the "importance" of the bridge they must take is brilliant. It, in my opinion, speaks so perfectly of the futility of warfare. As a disgruntled tanker in Iraq, I must admit, I myself wondered at least 7 million times out loud "what are we doing?", "why are we doing that?". This scene vocalizes that sentiment so clearly; the brutality and wastefulness of fighting and dying over some meaningless objective. What does this achieve? what's the importance? nothing. Just a "flyspeck" on a map that those in charge deem necessary to achieve some arbitrary goal. This movie is a masterpiece.

I remember falling in love with The Good, the Bad and the Ugly my freshman year at college, and then I was on IMDB and saw many people ranking Once Upon a Time in the West ahead of TGTBATU, and I was annoyed by it - how could any western, let alone another Sergio Leone western - be better than TGTBATU? That was how I felt until I saw OUATITW. The first 10 or so minutes of OUATITW seemed slow to me, but then when Ennio Morricone’s score kicks into high gear after Frank and his men do their dirty work, and they come out one at a time from the bushes in their dusters, I thought, ‘I guess it might actually be better than TGTBATU,’ and when I finished the film, I was certain of it. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is one of my 10 favorite films I’ve ever seen. Once Upon a Time in the West is top 5.

Didn't love this movie the first time I saw it actually. Thought the ending was brilliant but I thought the pacing wasn't great, wanted to see more of Angel Eyes and couldn't get over the dubbing. But something great happened. In the month after I saw the movie I couldn't get it out of my head. I was rewatching scenes on a daily basis and was downloading every part of the soundtrack and read everything I could about the making of it. After a month I decided I needed to give it another try. I couldn't believe my earlier opinion, I don't give a crap about those earlier flaws and I saw The Good, the Bad and the Ugly for the absolute masterpiece that it really is. It jumped right into my top 5 of all time, and the Ecstasy of Gold/Mexican standoff is my favourite movie scene of all time. Edit: 2 years later The Good the Bad and the Ugly is no longer in my top 5 because Once Upon a Time in the West bumped it out of the way :)

Ennio Morricone's score for 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly' demonstrates how important music is to telling a story in a film. Many scenes in this film don't have any dialogue so the music is crucial in keeping the audience invested in the experience.
