God's Not Dead was the same way. The whole issue in the movie was a non-issue. The Professor said the semester is packed so they are going to skip the chapter about God since most people are of different religions or don't believe in God in the first place and the Christian kid had a fucking heart attack and went to war with the school. Actually, Christmas began as Saturnalia. I celebrate my own holiday in December: Anti-Consumerism Month.

The date for Christmas came about because in the 2nd and 3rd centuries Christians were trying to add up when Christ was born, and it was a common belief that really important individuals often died on the day of their conception. Considering Jesus is held to have died around the Jewish celebration of Passover, early Christians dated the death of Christ to March 25 (or sometimes April 6), and the Feast of the Annunciation is still celebrated on this date. Hence 9 months after gave them the date of Jesus' birth. The winter solstice is the basis for the dating in non-Christian and Christian winter holidays, because Passover is fixed in relation to the Spring Equinox, not because of pagan traditions. I won't say that Christians didn't adopt some of the traditions of the people they were trying to convert, they absolutely did. But they didn't simply make up the holidays whole cloth in order to take the traditions. People seem to think that the people doing the converting were cynical marketers who didn't believe in what they were preaching, despite all indications that most of them believed very much in their message, hence why they were so determined to spread it.

You're wide awake upon learning I grew up in a culture, that had communism but also has a 3-day Christmas out of which all are public holidays. A lot of companies actually close down before Christmas, and work 3 Saturdays in November to stay closed between Christmas and New Year's Eve, only to open next year. Of course, if a holiday falls on a Thursday or a Tuesday, Mondays and Fridays are off (to be worked off on a Saturday) and it's a deeply white Christian country. They still eat up these persecution movies even though 90% are Christian.

I think people have completely misunderstood the "do not judge" line, because they don't seem to know what else the same page says. We can sit here and say that Jesus was all about peace and love, but that would be ignoring quite a lot of the big book. Jesus Christ, while having the most modern sensibilities out of all the prophets, was still a really fucking hardcore dude when it came to religion and lifestyle. I can confirm that as an Atheist I do celebrate Christmas, but I also agree that 98% is way too high. I wouldn't put it any higher than 85% and even then I feel that it may be a bit high. I would believe that 98% of Americans like the holiday season, but not christmas itself.

I think we have to consider that a large portion of those Christians are not really devout either.
