Hi, I bought a bike second hand and it came with carbon Easton ex90 22mm tubular wheels. I cannot afford to buy new carbon wheels. Makes me nervous on longer rides about punctures. Any advice ? Thanks

After 20 years on high-end clinchers I switched to high-end tubulars, and have never once thought of going back -- the bike is smoother in every regard. For whatever reason, I've gotten *far* fewer flats on tubulars. With a valve core remover and a bit of Orange Seal, I can fix a puncture in a minute, and the tire runs without fail afterward (and has for over a year with no extra sealant). Are the best clinchers/tubeless faster? Maybe, but it seems like every video of even skinny Rapha riders has them stopped, fixing their featherweight clinchers multiple times. I'm a big fatso but haven't dealt with that since my switch. I won't tell anyone who likes their clinchers they are 'wrong', but to anyone who is frustrated yet is scared by the tubular "hassle", I can say it is something of a myth.

Do any of the pro peloton teams use the tubeless setup?
@Charles-wz9sd
@Charles-wz9sd 6 жыл бұрын
John Bicycle no, most rims they use are not tubeless compatible yet. The most likely is Tony Martin because he is the only guy who is willing to use clinchers but continental does not have a really good set of tubeless.

I would say for individual training and races without technical assistance ( = spare wheels in the car) tubulars are pure death. Tubeless is the way to go. They are almost equally flat resistant like tubulars, serviceable in the field (in a matter of seconds). Tubeless tyre is lighter than average tubular, even after adding the weight of sealant (my Hutchinsons have 250 g + 40 g of sealant). High pressures are in fact good for nothing. With tubeless 25C I have approx. 6 bar front/6,5 rear.

I would believe that tubulars might have braking issues where rim brakes might distort the rim or damage the tires?

You can put stans liquid in a tubular right?
@ericpmoss

It's easier to use Orange Sealant because it doesn't have big particles in it, so it flows through the stem more easily. But yes, sealant works great. I have a tubular cross bike, and after finding the rear tire flat overnight, I put 15ml of sealant in, spun the wheel, pumped it up and have been riding it for months now. It's great.

so basically a "clincher" is just a beaded tyre with a fancy new name?? i had tubs on a bike twenty five years back. pain in the arse for flats.

I'd actually say that Clinchers are more expensive than Tubular systems. Tubular systems are cheaper to manufacture because companies don't need to design the clincher rim and can focus on the brake track. More people purchase Clincher rims so Tubular rims are often marked down for cheaper. People are more familiar with Clincher systems and Tubular flats is something people are rather afraid of.

People like the ease to install clincher tires. I can change a flat tube in less than 2 minutes and pumped up ready to go. Tubulars are much better but you need to have spares ready to go, so for Pros this is no problem but for the budget riders we use clinchers.

i fail to see the disadvantages of tubulars, dont we all wanna go faster and have lighter gear? tubulars it is, made my decision and ready to take the leap. good video though, thanks!

You won't get pinch flats with a tubular, but if you get a tiny puncture, you'll need to go through the three day process of cleaning, prepping and installing a new tubular tire. It's definitely a hassle, especially if you always do a thorough job of removing the old glue to maximize adhesion. I run a tubular front and clincher rear wheel because my rear wheel gets way more punctures than my front, and it's a lot safer to control the bike if a front tubular flats versus a front clincher. Also, if you're running rim brakes, the front rim gets more braking force which is also why it's safer to run tubular front, clincher rear.

since my last comment... I finally switched to tubs, and the ride quality is so much better, why havent I done it years ago? as for the extra work, I'm too busy to do it myself so the local shop will take care of it; I strongly recommend tubs to anyone looking into maximizing the performance of their machine and marginals gains. oh, did I mention they are lighter too :)

Have you ever heard of Pit Stop tire sealant? Removing the old glue does not increase adhesion. You absolutely have no idea what you're talking about.

i don't like clinchers, why..... tubulars are better in every aspect accept price, which is, tubular tyres are more expensive and can't always be fixed with sealant, re: a higher cost to run, otherwise tubulars are superior. Why, much lighter, up to half a kilo, they roll better, give a more comfy ride, can be pumped to higher and lower pressures without the risk of failure or pinch flats, are much easier to change (with practice), slashed tyres are no issue as you install a new tyre, tape for tubulars is so easy to use, you can still ride slowly on a flat tubular without damaging the rim to get you home and finally when your tyre goes flat whilst riding with a clincher you are on the rim, damaging the rim and there is no grip at all between the road and rim, but with a tubular you still have rubber under your wheel as it is glued on. if you ride expensive bikes i can't see the cost argument as tyres are a relatively cheap component compared to a carbon bike with a top end grouppo.

Tubeless are more convenient, rolls even better and the probability of flats is even smaller (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/grWZZ8arz6iVfqM.html). Weight approx. the same when we add sealant to the tubeless clincher weight. And rolls better. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a7R3oa5-28CZeZs.html Riding both, in future I will stick with tubeless.

Are there any braking issues with tubular tires and rim brakes? I never tried tubular and I would believe there might be issues in distorting the carbon material or damaging the tires with a rim brake/tubular system.

On road tubular tires the minimum pressure is usually 120-130 psi to prevent roll-offs.
