For people that don't have an awl I use a needle vised in to an old Xacto holder to line up the holes for staple reinsertion. My methodology is slightly different from Rick's but that is probably because we each developed our own techniques over the years. Great informative video for anyone new to reattaching a cover to a comic.

cool stuff. If you send those books in, will the third parties give you a hard time? Outside of them doing real lab work (microscopes, chemical tests, spectrographic test, etc..), I can't imagine they would even notice the staple if it's the same time period and not clean in place of a rust-stained page. They have a time budget.

Actually sometimes they claim the staples are replaced with new ones even when they are not!

@14:57 - Yeah, I fatigued a staple an it broke from a silver age book... I had to get a staple from the "Scrap yard", but it was from a bronze age book. Do you keep an inventory of different "age" staples?

Yeah actually I do have a catalog of staples that I’ve pulled from coverless books. I have a sealed most of them in a furnace to restore their ductility. I don’t have all that many any longer possibly around 30 or so!

Would the mending tape cause the book to get a purple label if sent in for grading?
