Join me for a hot take™(maybe?) about PC gaming. Been thinking a lot about how I play my games and why, and just wanted to share my thoughts. Do you share my feelings on PC gaming? Let me know what you think in the comments. Enjoy!
Also no console warring - that's cringe.

Okay but this also partly comes down to what kind of games you want to play. A big appeal of PC gaming to me are "PC" exclusives (saying this even if they are also available for Mac/Linux) like Total War, World of Warcraft, Endless Legend, and Age of Empires. Things like 4k also don't matter because I'm not playing on a 60-inch display.

True, by gaming I'm not just playing purely RPG, FPS, or recently releasd AAA titles, but also more diverse genres (and usually involve more grinding and researching that could easily surpass thousands of hours) like city builder, empire management, 4X, simulation, factory-like

This is probably the single biggest factor to be honest. We wouldn't sit around arguing if a nice steakhouse is better than a nice Sushi restaurant, we'd just go eat what we wanted. The same is true with gaming platforms it really depends on what you want.

Usual console points but you can hook up a PC to a TV too, and consoles now install games, updates, fixes etc. consoles have a pre configured software windows is a OS doing many task. Console price is "cheaper" but adding on the subscription fee, lack of sales to locked to one digital store, it's not. PC has a higher cost yes but you can tweak it all PC has *OPTIONS* and tons of them! and no paid online!

That's basically how i use my PC, it feels no different to how my Xbox One S felt, constant updates, logins, troubleshoots, that's why i moved to PC, because since last gen consoles just feels like locked down PC's, and for many problems you can mitigate it on PC, not to metion PC being an open ecosystem with options, PC's has multi generational worth of games, emulation, you can still find games that has been de listed thanks to the people who cracks and repacks games lol, no paid online, you can create your physical backups if you want to for most games, you can settings to play some older games even on weaker gpu's and you're not tethered to one OS.

@@christonchev9762 I think AI tools will need to progress and become more deeply integrated to simplify and speed up development of new AAA games which are starting to get so large in scope that they're almost unfeasible. Raytracing is one of those tools that can benefit the developer even more so than the end consumer, and other technologies in UE5 will have a similar, efficiency magnifying properties for developers.

I'm nearly in the same boat. I got my first PC in 2012. It was an i7 4770k and a GTX 770. It was a whole other world compared to console, mods, higher frames, higher resolutions, more options. I was playing at 1080p 60fps out of the gate. The Xbox 360 was a 720p 30fps machine that just couldn't compete. Its years later now, I'm passionate about my computer, I have an r9 7950x3d and a 7900xtx, I run 3x 1440p 144hz displays and the console won't won't have an experience like this for years and years. My last GPU actually died after only a year, a 6900xt which also blew the socks off any console experience, but while it was out of commission I went stir crazy and bought a ps5 off a friend so I could play games at all. I'd heard good things about the ps5, the games, the graphics. So I hooked it up to my 4k 120hz hdr10 miniled tv.... And forbidden west on vrr runs at like 20-30 fps and looks... Okay? It just doesn't run good at all. Racket and Clank rift apart looked okay and ran better but is definitely not 4k. Session skate Sim also ran okay. But eventually I got my PC back and I went back to greatness. A couple days ago I had the ich to turn on the ps5 and get use out of it before my missus complains about the fancy paperweight. I turn it on, I start up session, go get a drink, the game still hasn't loaded check my phone, and still stuck. I try restarting the machine (literally all the troubleshooting you can do) and it still won't load. Now I have an actual paperweight. Consoles don't hold a candle to PC's for now and I don't think ever will, they're made for the masses and also cut themselves to a price someway or another.

Totally agree. I have a PS5, first console I've owned since the gamecube, and I was blown away when I opened up the store and was introduced to $125 ($AUD) games that were months old (Horizon FW for example before it went on PS+). I still find the concept of paying to play online strange.
@sadisticD
@sadisticD Жыл бұрын
So just picked the last few games I played. God of War is $20 on PS5 and $50 on Steam. DMC5 is $24.99 on PS5 and $9.99 on Steam. Street Fighter 6 is $59.99 on both platforms. To get a gaming PC running recommended specs on SF6 it would cost roughly $1100 could probably get down to $900 if I got creative. It costs $15 a month to get online play (bullshit) and that comes with a catalog of free games to play on PS5 and it's discounted to $100 a year paid up front. So doing the math even with the $100 a year for online access and factoring games in at 20-30% less on Steam which isn't always the case plus not counting free games to download on Xbox game pass or PS plus it would take 4 years to make a PC purchase financially catch up to a PS5 or Xbox series x. The saddest part is that the consoles will probably be good for another 3-5 years and the PC will be needing more upgrades because the i7 and RTX 2070 wouldn't be cutting it by then. That's not even getting into exclusives and ease of use. I think a lot of it comes down to the type of gamer someone is. A gamer playing lot of one player action RPGs like myself is going to come out ahead on console most times. If I was a competitive FPS player that keyboard, mouse, and 120 Frames would be huge despite the costs.

As I’m currently playing Cyberpunk 2077 on my PC (not at the highest settings) and it looks better than the PS5. I think its the same situation i’m seeing when re-purchasing PS3 games on Steam. On PC it will look better and later down the line when/if you replay them your gonna be glad you bought them on PC, it will look better and you’ll probably have a better chance of still being able to play it. On PS4 & PS5 i cant access my PS3 library. The gap however is closing graphically, I’m just not sure consoles will ever be as good as a top end PC but depends what you want and what you can put up with. Console is good value for money. I feel you on office/man cave. I have the same situation. I bought a mini PC to play most games downstairs (have a mini keyboard for when i need it) , even leaving my 4k TV behind, games look fine in 1080p, Cyberpunk looks amazing.. Use my laptop for more recent games.

Pc Gaming Blows Going Back To Console
@jimmychops
@jimmychops Жыл бұрын
I play on PC, Xbox as well as my Switch. Here’s my take: I think that objectively the PC has more advantages, I would prefer to play many games on PC rather than console. However, the possible low entry price of a console is a advantage, if your fine spending more later on, which varies in terms of price person to person. If someone were to give me a budget of around $500 that they were looking to spend on a gaming device, I’d personally recommend either-or, console or a budget pc, depending on what games they play. I enjoy playing on the three platforms that I own regardless, I will not say equally however, I find that sometimes it just depends on the time to determine if I’ll play on my PC or on my consoles, which for me it’s PC for the most part. I’ll say this: I see no reason to ridicule people for choosing a console over a pc, that’s just rude. But I think that advocating for better consumerism on consoles is necessary. These platforms are definitely not equal, but at the end of the day it’s up to the individual to decide, because people can choose on whatever the want.

Nah, I can build a PS5 equivalent PC for around $600-700 now that prices have settled down a bit after the pandemic. Even PS5 class SSDs have dropped significantly to the point where I just got a 1TB PCIe 4.0 M.2 for $59 a few weeks ago. The biggest advantage of all is getting to bypass all the console war nonsense and being able to play the best of PS5 and Xbox all in one system, play all the PC games that don’t exist on consoles, and easily emulate the Switch. Then there’s the obvious benefit of being a full computer that can do so much more than any of them.
@sadisticD
@sadisticD Жыл бұрын
@@tronam Spec to spec? Yes we could easily make a PC at the same price. Performance for the price? Nah absolutely not. It's the one place consoles have people by the balls, the optimization is quite impressive. Switch is easy to Emulate PS4 and especially PS5 not so much and PC ports haven't been anywhere near as good as their console counterparts. Which is subject to change because the PS3/360 era I would argue the PC ports were actually the best way to play.
@tronam
@tronam Жыл бұрын
@@sadisticD I don’t find the optimization that impressive at all, at least not yet. So far current-gen consoles haven’t yet lived up to their apparent potential. How’s that 8K and 4K/120 gaming going after all the lead up hype and marketing? How is ray/path tracing coming along or AI upscaling? Even lower midrange PCs are outclassing the 2019 era hardware of these consoles and you get all the other advantages of a computer. I also save so much money on Steam sales, $10/mo GP and not being required to pay a ridiculous sub fee just for multiplayer.

Consoles have never been more expensive, PC parts are generally always getting cheaper. we're relatively early in the life cycle of the 9th gen consoles, so a pc with the same price as a ps5 can be expected to perform more or less the same (best case scenario) or worse, this is not new. what's new, however, is that the market is so fucked up to the point that even people are, more than ever, turning to and interested in previous gen hardware and especially gpus. this is simply unacceptable. the cpu side of things is quite healthy and competitive tho

Harry Potter, jedi survivor, elden ring, last of us remaster.. all very difficult to run on PC. Starfield is a mess on nvidia gpu's and cyberpunk just released a warning to pc users as the DLC is designed to run your cpu at 90% so upgrade your cooling! Looking at the price of a decent GPU here in Australia, even previous gen, is enough to push me to a PS5. I could, for example, get a PS5, extra controller, charging dock, and some used games for less than a single decent 1440 high fps or 4K 60 GPU. Something that may be is not being said at least for PS side (as microsoft will port games into a PC when they are exclusives for Xbox... they will reach PC sooner or later...) for PS games is not the case with exclusives games like God of War or Last of us, Uncharted, Ghost of Tsushima, etc, where PC gamers has to wait long time to be able to play them, in the past Console games were ok, PC games were better, but in noweadays, Console games are getting better, and is a shame PC gamers need to wait years long after release to have them, and sometime with risk of a bad porting (i'm looking at you Last of us PC)...

While this is true, I find there are soooooo many games I enjoy on PC, where I can play these dozens of other games while I was a year or so until consoles exclusives are ported (and generally save money this way too. I'm fortunate enough to own a PS5/Switch as well, so when a game I really want to play day 1 comes out I can. Also currently my PC is hooked up to the OLED TV in the main room because I'm playing a couple of story heavy single player games from the couch with a controller (at least until I get a OLED monitor). When I want to play online FPS or other games with precise aiming and fast paced movement, I can spend the 5 minutes unplugging the pc, taking it to the office and playing on my high refresh rate monitor. I love the freedom this platform espouses. I just finished writing this as you mentioned couch PC gaming with big picture mode XD Also for any gamers out there using an Xbox controller to play on PC, I HIGHLY recommend buying the $12-15 microsoft official usb dongle to connect your PC. It may just be me, but many PC bluetooth options never seem to be as reliable, efficient or have the range that the cheap dongle has. Plus I believe this is the only way to have 3 or more wireless controller connected for local coop.

PC will always be the best option for one reason and one reason only, it's practically timeless. Even when you upgrade to a better PC, your old PC is still solid for playing the same games 5-10 years ago. Only difference is online driver and software support and even then, those updates will get archived by someone long before the support discontinues

Honestly for me most of the games I play are older and indies so my interest in new hardware is super low where as someone on the opposite end gets the new 90 series Nvidia each time they come out and want to play brand new games at 4k 120fps. That's the freedom of PC that both people can exist and have what they want.

If you play on Linux, all the drivers should be baked into the kernal already so you dont even need to worry about online drivers. As for software support, on Linux, with proton on Steam, games will run better and last longer than on Windows sooo that gives extra points to PC gaming. Even if Windows goes to shit, we still have other options like Linux basically which is great to have for game preservation / software preservation.

PC is better and will always be better. Didnt watch the video but just commenting this as i see the title. Edit: If your someone who only plays games like NBA 2k and casually other games. and when i say casually i mean you probably only game like every other week or day. meaning you play but barely. just get a console. PC will always give you the better experience. but to compare each other performance wise. PC is and will always be better. Also if you say PC is expensive its not... i mean it CAN be but it dosent have to be. The selection of parts is a wide variety. You can build a console equivalent which is a Ryzen 7 3700x , RTX 2070 super and 16gb ram for 500 dollars or even less if you buy from the right places. I dont hate console but its just strange how in 2024 this is even still a discussion. At this point its whatever you prefer but just so you do KNOW PC is and will always be better.
@Bargate

I do agree with you but PC parts pretty much are only that cheap in the United States. That setup you listed would be way above the 500 dollars budget in the UK and most other countries with them also earning much less money. I definitely think it's worth getting a PC over a console just worth saying the value in a console could be much more competitive depending on where you live for example.

As someone who has a family, responsibility, a mortgage and a full time job, on top of a side business, I don't have time to be a computer nerd anymore. PS5 is the way to go for plug and play. In order to get the full use out of a PC, you need to have ALOT of spare time, and you have to want to play AAA games all the time. I play 3 games. Battlefield, RDR2 and I have a 500 dollar PC that I'll use once a year to get my WoW fix in. Other than that. I can't justify spending 2000-4000 dollars to get a PC with the best frames per second just to ignore my family to play GTA 5 or CoD. I'll just sit on my couch and relax with my nachos.

PC doesn't only cater to hardcore gamers... it's major focus is to casuals who don't want to spend extra money for a gaming device just to play simple games. A lot of casual gamers just prefer to download a game and play something simple when off work or something. I'd say PC and Mobile gaming are more casual than console gaming because it's more accessible. We all need a computer or a phone for daily life shit so it's less of a barrier to play on devices you already own. @@Annihilation99

PS5 is my main gaming rig but I have a PC. There are just certain inconveniences with PC. With my PS5 I have 15 seconds until I can get inside my game playing, it only takes 4 buttons. It should be 1, the ps button should turn on everything but it's severely faster than the PC. Browsing PSN deals vs Steam deals is also huge. How the fck do I sift through 11,000 deals, PSN has 400 at a time and is manageable to find new games I didn't know I wanted. Exclusives are mana from heaven. PC just isn't for me as long as the price to performance doesn't get out of hand for PC. PS5 IS $400, not $500. PCs don't have disk drives.

There are tons of games that only exist on PC, but if all you’ve ever known is console gaming, then ignorance is bliss I guess. I’m sure there are plenty of casual gamers who only play 1 or 2 titles 95% of the time, so for those CoD and FIFA folks it probably just makes sense to stick with consoles. Otherwise nothing beats the open ended, future proof flexibility of PC and being able to neutrally play games from all the platforms.

PC operating systems really suck. Windows vs the PlayStation OS, PlayStation OS wins every day. It ensures apps don’t misbehave it works without a bunch of bugs and doesn’t get in the way. Windows really sucks. I don’t think people realize how bad it is. Our collective consciousness has blocked out how much troubleshooting we’ve had to do. Ease of use is a big point for the console, but I think that the pc objectively speaking has more advantages compared to a console. It all comes down what advantages are more relevant to you. I could also say that being able to tinker with settings is an advantage for me. Especially in regards to audio, because I'm quite picky about the sound and like listening to music. The dac for my headphone alone costs more than a console (don't even ask about the headphone) and I still have to use EQ to get the audio to my preference (usally harman target with a tiny bit more bass). This is a level that you just can't reach with a console.
