Today I'm trying out a Vintage Birthday Cake Recipe!
My birthday is coming up soon, and what better time to try and recreate a good old fashioned birthday cake from The General Foods Kitchens Cookbook?

Regarding flour-y products in a box, my grandma taught me to use a piece of wax paper. Lay it on the counter, measuring cup on top of that, then tip box and gently pour into the cup. The wax paper collects all the spill over and what you level off. When done, it's easy to use the wax paper to add spill over back to the box.

I know this is a year old, BUT- next time, try the 1960 Betty Crocker Party Book. Good old "Betty" and her minions of home economists and food stylists give detailed instructions on how to make a similar cake, on page 22. But MY favorite is the puppy dog cake on page 21. He bears a striking resemblance to Snoopy. Second favorite: Magic Pumpkin Cake on page 25. "Betty" doesn't mess around.

"I threatened to do it, and I'm doing it." That should really be your tag line. Honestly Anna, this made my day. You did way better at this than I ever would have... I excuse all of my cake decorating disasters as "rustic." You made a pretty convincing carousel, and if it were me, there wouldn't have been a single animal cracker left. Oh, by the way, that small tapered offset spatula... I love that!! I've never seen one around here, but I'll have to dig one up. Another amazing one Anna!

Thank you!! If I ever create merch, I'll be sure to have that line printed on some hats and shirts. 😂 This was such a wild cake to decorate. I just imagined a harried mother in 1959 trying to perfect it for Junior's birthday. Rest assured there are no more animal cookies in my house at this time. The little tapered spatula was SO helpful with trying to get in between all of the wedges. Highly recommend.

Ok, I’m old. I know this recipe. This cake is a play on an old candy called “Circus Peanuts.” They were orange and almondy flavored stiff marshmallowy candies shaped like peanuts, colored orange, even with the crinkly looking peanut shell texture. The cake is decorated circus-ish carnival-ish with those candy flavors. Shaped like a circus tent or carousel. My husband liked the peanut orange things. I did not. But, the cake was popular with kids way back then when a circus was a big deal. Yours looks GreaT!

If it won't make cupcakes or a sheet cake, I'm pretty terrible at stacked cakes. My daughter has always asked for a good yellow cake with chocolate buttercream. I've gotten a little better in icing it. It really is a dreamy cake. It's never very pretty but tastes oh so good. It's my one and only stacked cake.

I’m running around the corner to Dollar Tree for those spatulas! My children would have been thrilled with that cake, as I’d have made a big deal about it and been so excited. My Mom told me every year about the day before I was born, how she spent it with her childhood friend, while she was in Labor, walking through the Grocery store. Her Mom was here to manage the household and was anxious for Mom to get to the Hospital (she had delivered 5 children at home) afraid I would be born “before the doctor got there”! Mom was 99 in October and died just before my birthday & I missed hearing the tale again. I also was excited for my children’s Birthdays, telling them how excited I was for their arrivals and their Birthdays each year! What cake would we have that they chose? I wish I could have made this for one of my little ones. I so enjoy your videos.❤️❤️

Hi Anna! Thank you for sharing your birthday creation with us. 😊 I think you did an amazing job on this. 👍👍 I know you were concerned about it not rising, but I think the problem was a difference in the size of the vintage cake pan and a modern one. Your cake looks bigger in diameter, so this is not about your baking skills! I hope it tasted good after all your effort. Again, great job! I thought it looked yummy! Take care and have a wonderful day! 😊🌸🌷

I'm not reading the other comments, just hoping the Cake Decorating Police didn't give you too hard a time. I enjoy your videos which are always fun, upbeat and relaxing. You have a great personality. The cake looks really cute, be proud of your good work! This is one of the few videos in which I have not seen plates, bowls, mixing bowls, candy dishes and cookbooks that have graced my life. I remember showing my Dad, in 1973, my new Corelle dishes with the green flowers at the border. I also had the matching mixing bowl set and the little casserole set. So fun!

I'll let you know how it all turns out. I can't find any peppermint sticks at Walmart rn, so I am thinking of using some vanilla wafers that I have on hand. We'll see lol

Here are a couple of tips for a flat surface on top: 1) invert the cake so the risen, curved top faces down. 2) fill the center whole with a round cookie (my mom used Oreos for chocolate cake and Nilla wafers for yellow cake) to the level of the top of the cake surface. Then you can frost the top and it will look like a smooth, unbroken surface. Your cake looked adorable, though!

First off, just let me say you shouldn't have to make your own birthday cake. That said, you are way too hard on yourself. That cake turned out pretty well and had you made it for a child, they would have been delighted! It looked to me like your frosting was a bit soft and whipping it longer to get more air into it would have made it easier to control. Something to remember for your next cake with frosting. Your comment about a cake stand / turntable is very true. Put one on your Christmas / birthday list. The plate you used is lower in the center than on the edge which is making your job tougher to frost it. I love watching you cook and the vintage element makes it even better. Sending you hugs from Cincinnati, OH.

Why are these recipes so conservative on the frosting?? As for the cake itself...It was not good! 😂 I feel like they were a little heavy on the flavorings (and 2 strong-ish flavors at that). They clashed and made for a weird medicinal taste. I'd say don't make the cake, but DO decorate a cake in this way.

Don’t you hate it when you try to open the plastic bag and it won’t open?? I hate that so much. I always have to cut it too! This is one weird cake. What is the origin? Is it from the cake flour or ingredient company and they thought that this cake would sell their ingredients?? I know they did that in the old days - the ingredient company would pay magazines or book authors to create things using their ingredient (like Knorr Gelatin or Pillsbury flour) and then they would publish it and everyone would go nuts? Maybe it was an entry in the Pillsbury bake-off?? Sounds like something from those booklets. Happy early birthday! Enjoy the cake!

Thank you! ♥ Oh my gosh, that bag would NOT budge! Had to call in reinforcements and break out the kitchen scissors. This cake is definitely strange, and although the decoration was festive and fun, it didn't taste great. The recipe is from the General Foods Kitchens Cookbook published in 1959. Some of my favorite books are the ones where companies try to push branded products into every recipe!

Thank you! Cake decorating is definitely out of my comfort zone, but I had a lot of fun giving it a try. 😄

@@cooking_the_books you did great. I’m looking everywhere for my Judd family cookbook. It’s worth over 100$ on eBay. Can’t find it😌

Eeh. Photo is of a cake made by a pro who does cakes 5 days a week, or it is not even really the recipe and made by a food-stylist; definitely not made by a frantic housewife who does a decorated cake twice a year.. Trying to live up to cookbooks, magazines, and TV perfection is why well-off women turned to Valium and such. The "Eeh, close enough. It still tastes good." attitude of modern women is much better.

Oh I immediately remembered where it was the second I stopped filming. Figures! Surprisingly, our next door neighbors here do not collect cake stands like our next door neighbors in Ohio! 😂
