OK, a little background, 6'4" 250#, former rugby player, cigar smoker, friend to bikers and saints alike, with a beard that makes lesser men gaze upon it with awe ... I am bawling. Absolutely B E A utiful. I don't know where to begin. Aside from the obvious admiration I have for this man I must highlight the amazing mother this young man has. The celebrity with the beard (sorry, I can't recall his name) used the word "proactive". This woman could have taken so many other paths including the ugly "black vs. white" which is popular today. Instead ... she took the time out of what I am certain are very busy days with an autistic son and a husband who travels, to visit the police station. I'm balling. This is so beautiful! And I know first hand how scary the feeling is that this mother had. I have an autistic child as well and I've seen and heard awful things happen between cops and people on the spectrum. My autistic cousin was tazed and beaten and thrown in jail for being suspicious when he's severely autistic nonverbal and deaf! They thought he was on drugs. Introducing my son to the local police is a wonderful idea. Ill have to remember that when they start allowing people back in their offices.

As a Autistic person I did the same thing as a child in the 1980s to a girl I met in person asking her if she wanted to keep in touch from Canada she came to visit me in Seattle Washington area with her family and my older sister Sharon told me I should keep in her through letter writing and I said I don't know how to write letters. After we wrote letters I ask her if she would be my little sister since I didn't have one! And she said yes and we've writing letters back and forth up until emails started, then she introduced me to Facebook and were still friends now, still communicate mainly through online of course. She's the greatest little sister I've had since I was little

I have always been the person writing notes, letters, etc. I have had pen pals since I was probably 14. This is great to hear on so many levels. So amazing. I think people forget how much written word between people can be very important. It's a very personal expression and form of communication.

I've met a lot of cops in my life due to the jobs I've worked and things like that, and I have to tell you that the great majority of them are like him. The problem we get a lot is that especially in big cities in their attempt to make sure that everything is done "uniformly" everything is set to these super strict protocols on how to respond to every situation, and unfortunately not all situations are created equal. So you have these situations where the "protocol" would call for the responding officer to react a certain way, but there might be some detail about this situation that makes that response unreasonable but so many times it involves something that might not be completely apparent at first to the people there. And then just from the bad interactions that stem from that and other negativity it kind of breeds this "us versus them" mentality which is just bad for everyone. I agree with him that we need to focus more on community policing, but again like with anything else, there's no one solution that works for every situation, so there might be times where community policing might not be beneficial. So there really needs to be a lot of complexity to all of this and how to really decrease this tension between police and the people. And unfortunately most of the media thrives on sensationalism so they don't do anything to help the situation at all...

We need to focus on the police union's. I fully support unions and I believe that every employee should have a union fighting for their rights. Even IF the department does acknowledge a bad cop it's almost impossible to fire them. I've seen story after story of a cop being fired for breaking the law in various and extreme ways, only to have the union sue for their job back and win. It's corruption in the highest form. Only bad cops tho because I've also seen multiple stories, the most recent one is from the Miami PD and it's always female cop's that suffer. This woman wanted to be a police officer her whole life and she finally got a job with Miami PD only to be constantly sexually harassed and threatened and when she finally reported it she was fired, but nothing from the union tho.
