Country View Acres

We planted a new hay Field a couple months ago, now it time to do some more work to it. We are going to mow it done, to knock down any remaining weeds and to promote stronger roots in the Grass and alfalfa. We are also going to spread fertilizer to the field to help the growth of the hay.

Golden rule with new grass, First cut should be kept no lower 6"-to 8", this is to protect other new grass shouts from the sun a bit. Looking good though. It is interesting that you have better grass around the sides than the middle. Due to the shade of your surrounding trees and hedges, the outsides of the moisture. This is way the grass is thicker on the outside. Have fun.

I am commenting from Allenford, Ontario, Canada My opinon for what its worth let it grow till seeds form then cut it and leave it alone till next year leaves will form compost as they die seeds will hopefully germinate and make more plants for next season Thats the way alot of farmers in this area do it but that may be because of the short growing season in Canada All the best

I know that most turf grasses used for lawns are hybrids and the seeds they produce are sterile. I know nothing about hay, though.......

Should be really good in the years to come. Ours went through the same situation and we started spreading our manures over the worst areas and let it rest long enough to come in healthy. We graze ours mpw and when the grass outgrows our stock in the spring, we drag it down (instead of cutting) and let it rest again (per Greg Judy). Cutting the tops eliminates root and it takes forever to come back. "Bad" weeds die naturally when the soil improves and good forbes come in with good care along with grasses. We were not sure but it worked! Lush pastures thick with quality graze. If you can wait a year to cut, that would be great and the best part is that the only amendment to the soil are the manures. Takes time to make good pasture.

Leaving it in wind rows like you did usually chokes and smothers the grass growing under it. If you're going to cut but not bale it then it's a good idea to leave it spread it out as long as it's not too thick.

Great video. I love watching your videos. Have you ever considered running your chickens through the hay field using the chicken tractors likeJ oel Salatin uses. I enjoy watching Joel Salatinss videos as well and the manure and urine are a great asset to the grass as well as pest removal ;)

You did your field a positive by not baling and returning the clippings back to the soil. I know your soil tests came back saying it didn't need anything, but apparently it does. I would use a 20/10/10 instead of the 10/10/10, more Nitro. Jmo. Wait until fall to over-seed the field/lawn after you filled in the ruts and use a starter fertilizer on the heavy side and pelletized lime and water often, the lawn that is, And keep fertilizing every 2 months. It will pay you back ten fold. How was the 4th party ? Any big fish or turtles caught ? Excellent video and thumbs up !

Watching other YT channels, i understand that AlfaAlfa grows well when it rains less and tall grass grows more when it rains heavily. Hence you have less alfaalfa this year

We have not had a good year for farmers in SE IL and SW IN. I’m thankful for what you received. We just sold the last of our family farm in SE Il. It was all tillable. We live all over the country but I’m still in SW Indiana. I’m probably your parents age so it being subdivided with the nieces and nephews seemed impossible.

What is your rainfall there. It looks droughty the tall grass is stronger than the others. Try adding Clover to the mix, it will add Nitrogen and increase green growth. You have said the soil has been tested. I assume N,P,K and pH. All are ok? Check for Mg, Cu and other micronutrients as well. Please dont bail if possible and take your second cut after seed heads have dried. Ted to shake the seeds out. Keep livestock on the field, free fertiliser :-)))

I thimk lime would help your hay where its sparse. Also that sloped yard area may not be the best dirt. It does need more seed and straw and keep the straw damp. Promotes grass groth and prvents erosion.

Enjoyed watching you use the old brush hog cutting your grass, Question: have you ever taken that brush hog slip clutch apart and cleaned adjusted it, If they are not maintenance the clutch may not slip if you hit a solid object, do not think these units have a shear bolt so the slip clutch is all you have to protect your tractor pto shaft and brush hog gearbox, Take care,

your beautiful farm looks like it may need lime and lots of it...i only know my own experience...a soil test would have been good in beginning...when i first planted my field i had the same mix with added oats to protect the alfalfa first year. i added lime in the grass mix...today years later my pasture is way too rich for my horses so i have to keep them off the pasture first part of the year. Fertilizing it when root are young can burn it up. Fertilize in the beginning before seed may help.

you didnt put enough on, for that size area, plue you need to do the whole area, leaving the out sides, is not helping it, and being new grass and alfalfa, i would have used 19.19.19,,100Lb to the acre, did you apply it when you seeded it?, cutting it and leaving the cuttings is food soil building, i know longer have a tractor, so i put lots of manuer in a big 1000 gallon tank, and fill it with water and stir it up using the air comprsser, i tae it out and spray it on my fields as im all red clay

I’m not a farmer but do own a few acres. Since your soil test was OK do you think your yellow leaves on the alfalfa could have been caused by the excessive rainfall on very young seeded field.
