Next up on the printer unboxing and first impressions is the Ender 3 S1, the first Ender 3 I have ever owned! In this video, I show you what you can expect in the box, provide my first impressions along the way and also run a quick test print.
The Ender 3 S1 has definitely pushed the price up, I picked this one up for £360, but have seen them over £400 on a number of sites! Is it going to be worth the extra dosh? We shall see.
I hope you enjoy the video, don't forget to LIKE and SUBSCRIBE :D

Just bought my first 3D printer the S1 yesterday. I wish I had watched your video first! Very well done and clear instructions. 5 months later and the price difference here in Oz is now about 50-60% dearer than the Ender 3 V2 which means it is very good value.

Hey Ross, thanks for the comment, how are you getting on with your S1? Yes it’s got some serious upgrades over the V2, so worth the extra cash in my opinion.

seeing you handle this without manually levelling all 4 corners like i see some people flat out insist and then for it to work out is genuinely relieving, second video demonstration ive seen now to prove you can just use the automatic leveling and adjust the z offset.

Yes it works quite well! Not absolutely perfect, but pretty good and you still have the option to fine tweak with the bed knobs too of course.

Hi callum coles I have ender 3 s1 today. Does I need update new firmware for it? Thanks
@CallumColes
@CallumColes 2 жыл бұрын
It is possible, when you switch the printer on, go to Control >> Info. Then see what firmware version is loaded, if the latest firmware is higher, you may chose to update the firmware to save some bugs! The latest firmware can be found here: www.creality.com/download

Would love to see you compare the S1 with the anycubic vyper, i am stuck as to which one i should get as my first ever 3D printer. Both are similar in price and look like solid first time machines. But it would be great to hear your expert opinion on them.👍👍😎🇬🇧

Thanks for the comment, could make an interesting video for sure. I've not personally used the Anycubic Vyper but just had a quick look at the specs online. I do think from a reliability standpoint this Ender 3 S1 would take some beating at this price point to be honest. The completely redesigned hot end and extrusion system 'Sprite' is quite impressive, whereas the Vyper is still using a fairly basic extruder and hot end combo. Where the other upgrades are concerned, they look more evenly matched and obviously the Vyper boasts a bigger build volume which may be attractive to some. I suspect the part cooling performance would also be better on the vyper. Must admit, I am a little disappointed this ender still only has one directional cooling. But yes, the main difference is the extrusion system. Direct drive vs Bowden. I've already had the pleasure of printing some TPU with this Ender 3 S1 and its a delight. Some of the cleanest TPU prints I have ever produced.

Do you see where the filament run out sensor plugs into my came unplug and i cannot figure out where to re plug it into. Thank you and Great video
@CallumColes
@CallumColes 2 жыл бұрын
The port in the filament run out sensor plugs into a cable that should be sat in the top of the printer in the 2020 extrusion. If you see the belt that link the two Z lead screws together it should be behind that. The other end plugs into the smallest of the three ports in the back corner of the printer, on mine it was marked 'filament detector' Hope that helps:)

If you can, do a 5-point bed level check, I've been hearing some of the beds were warped. Mine was definitely not level, when I leveled all 4 corners using paper, I checked the middle, the nozzle was 15-20mm from scraping the paper.

Callum, thanks for the video! I've been looking at finally getting a printer, and having the S1 be it (thought there was a bit of looking at the Anycubic and Artillery offerings during the course of my initial research). But it was nice to actually see what the initial actions were, as I was hearing that despite having the auto-leveling feature, a manual bed adjustment would need to be made. At least from what I saw, that doesn't look to be the case outside of doing the z-offset. Based on your experience with the unit, is there anything that I should be prepared to handle initially outside of just getting used to whatever slicer software I end up using (looks like it will be Cura, since I've been playing with that just for familiarization)? Based on what I've seen about the unit, including this video, the $439 USD price tag seems quite reasonable. Though instead of the cat, I think the first print might be a custom test cube I cobbled together in Rhino - happy to send it along if you're interested. But thanks again!

Hey Jason, thanks for the comment, glad you liked the video! Pleased to hear you're going to join the printing club! I won't lie to you, it can be a challenge at times, but nothing worth having comes easy. I think the S1 is a fabulous choice for a starter printer. So many headaches will be removed vs some of the budget options. There is always the argument that less headaches = less learnt, but some lessons don't need to be learned. It is still possible that a manual bed adjustment could be required if the bed does not start very level out of the box, which is possible. Although, there is a walkthrough built in to the printer that will help you do this. Personally, I've always been a fan of a manual level anyway and have a generic manual bed levelling video also. I've not used the printer enough to pass my final judgement yet. The review video will be a few weeks away. So off the top of my head, I'd say: -> Don't try and print crazily fast, it is still a direct drive extruder with a moving bed. -> Remember part cooling is only from one side, so part orientation will affect your overhang performance. I normally run a mile when I hear of 3d models generated in Rhino. I know, as CAD goes, it is quite easy to introduce mesh errors. But hey, you may be an expert in Rhino (I'm not), so feel free to share some pics of the print @3dtomorrow on socials. Good luck with your printer journey. Hope to see you on my future videos =]

@@CallumColes In re Rhino and bad meshes, if I had to guess, it's probably because people come to it from a more "traditional" solid modeler like SolidWorks/Inventor/Fusion 360/etc. With Rhino, you don't really have solids per se, but rather closed surfaces, and from there, not checking for bad or open meshes. At least, that's just a real off the cuff guess which I could be *horribly* wrong about. Definitely look forward to picking up the S1, though.

Defiantly not twice the price of a v2($280 usd). A v2 upgraded to this point is about the same price. Plug and play in about 20 min. I own 2 of these and they are great! But good video.

Basic math says It's not twice the price. Even if it were. For the same $400 you'd get half the upgrades for an E3v2 that the S1 comes with. I own both.

Unusual point of contention, it is near enough twice the price? In the UK the price of the Ender 3 V2 is around £190, the 3 S1 is over £400 from most outlets. What’s the problem with that assertion?

Not tried it, but not convinced by the design decision of a heavy direct drive extruder being held by a single arm, would have to print very slow to avoid artefacts.
