Very cool, thanks guys. I find it interesting that Mover said that the F-14 could probably outrun the guns as well, but not the missiles, 'cause I saw a debate where people were saying that even though the F-14 has a higher top speed than the Su-57, it doesn't have the acceleration and so wouldn't be able to get away quickly enough to actually outrun it - any comments on that?

I remember someone saying that in a different video. Maverick was trying to signal "comms are down" to justify not hearing them, but you're interacting with a different air force and they may well have different gestures and of course a "down" signal could be interpreted in plenty of ways. I took it as the other pilot thinking "this guy can't hear me, I need him to follow me to a heading" but now it does actually make sense that he'd be seeing "Need to land" and trying to guide Maverick to the nearest runway for repairs.

@@noctisattano2593 I got DCS a while back because of how often I heard people talk about it. I played Ace Combat and later Project Wingman, both fantastic stories but I do recognise they are clearly arcade-combat games not proper simulations... played a bit of DCS and good god it takes a lot to earn your wings. Allegedly, I'll leave it to actual pilots to confirm this, the simulations are that accurate to the real things that you could learn how to start up and fly a real jet fighter using it, that's how accurate the start-up and aerodynamics are of the planes. Again, I'll leave that to real pilots, I'm not about to trash a very expensive plane trying to prove a point.

I haven't flown it in a while, but I do have the Tomcat in DCS, and the bits of start-up shown seemed reasonably accurate. At least compared to how it's simulated in DCS. However, if one had to raise an objection, it'd be that the RIO has a bunch of stuff to do in the cockpit before engine start. And Rooster doesn't seem to play that part. But it's possible they were flying with minimum systems on. Possibly not even radar (can't remember if the scope was shown online).

Yes and no. There is an argument that it was 'easy', but what did you expect? If the whole thing had devolved into an on-ground fight with guns or fists to get to the Tomcat it would have been completely out of character for these characters, the franchise, and everything related to it. Not to mention it would have slowed down the movie to a crawl. The whole point about Top Gun is pilots doing cool thing with planes in the air. The movie argument is that in the mess caused by the bombing earlier, between wounded, killed, and those trying to put out fires or help others, there is a case to be made that the last thing those still standing would think is that there are two enemy pilots in the base (probably they don't even are aware two pilots were shot down), and much less trying to get onto an old fighter specially when the runways are destroyed to take off.
@terryritter7065
@terryritter7065 Жыл бұрын
Is it? There's the "fog of war", but also everyone on the base has a responsibility in a time like that. You wouldn't' be worried about someone else as much. Two pilots running to check if a plane is flyable and getting it into the air would not look out of place, I'd think. It's not like they are going to need clearance from ATC.

I was a Jet Engine Mechanic in the U.S. Navy when I served, I served with VFA-151 on the U.S.S. Midway with the F/A-18A's, Then was stationed with VF-114 on the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln, I worked on the F-14A's B's and D's with VF-24 and VF-31 along with time at Top Gun at NAS Miramar, before returning to the F/A-18 community at the end of my service, With the F-14 Tomcat, the air source is plugged into the starboard side rear fairing under the airbag about where the trailing edge would be if the wings are not swept, now you can from the cockpit pit which engine that you crank first, NORMALLY the starboard engine is started first to get Primary hydraulic pressure for the brakes and horizontal stab actuators, after the engine is running at idle, you can start the other engine or air can be disconnected and start the other engine with cross bleed starting, now after a lot of pausing the instruments look to be right, we do not get a very long glance at them, BUT the fuel is WRONG the gauge reads 20,000 pounds, but that is impossible without drop tanks which this F-14 does not have, the max fuel weight would be 16,000 pounds of internal fuel, I did see a few things that was wrong when "ROOSTER" was going around and prepping the outside for takeoff, the first thing he removed was the electrical connector, this is NOT done till BOTH engines are at idle and both generators are fully online, now I am not an ordie, but I have NEVER seen anyone just grab the flag and yank out the pins out, also I don't even think that is possible, I DO know that those pins are locking pins, there is a button that has to be pushed to release pull them, I do not know which version of Sidewinder that are on this plane, but after he pulled the pins, he DID NOT pull out the T handle, rotate it 90 degrees to enable the rocket motor, and fold back down to the side of the missile body, the pulling of the air hose looked ok, but the main gear safety locks are a bit more complicated than just a locking pin like in the nose gear or any of the gear pins on an F/A-18, as far as how he got onto the plane to enter the cockpit, that is correct, and was quite common to be done, G-suit and oxygen are identical BUT the F-14A had a different ejection seat if they done this, they would NOT have any leg restraints available for them you use, Ejection would be very problematic, in the F/A-18 the leg restraints are ATTACHED to the seats and are fully adjustable for each individual crew member, the the F-14A and B this is not the case, the leg restraints are part of each crew members flight gear, Kock fittings are the same, also when they got in the seats, MAVERICK should have known but on top of the seat is a safety switch, with a little red paddle, before you go flying, that paddle which is usually done by the crew member is flipped down, to arm the seat, upon landing, they reach up and flip it up disarming the seat, now how come when they were in the little hangar, the plane had a launch bar, but when taxi out, no launch bar??? flaps and slats help in takeoff and landing, neither can be used on the F-14 without the wings being in the 20 degree position, yes there is an ejection handle in the F-14A's between your knees, but the Primary is the face curtain rings,

The A and B are but there’s no reason the D couldn’t be flying today. The D was tested for HARM and AMRAAM and those tests were successful. They didn’t get the funding for it. The D was far more an asset than say the Charlie model F-15 was beings it had a very good air to ground capability as well as air to air. The continuation of the heavy use of hydraulic fluid was the only Achilles heel of the D model. That would of course be fixed with 21. The biggest issue was there were still A models flying as late as 2001 and A+ models out to as late as 2003. Those should have been retired decades before.

The movie shot some scenes on the carriers USS Oriskany and USS Kearsarge along with some scenes shot at the US Naval Base in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Japan. The aircraft used are Grumman F9F Panther Fighter Squadron 192 (VF-192) "Golden Dragons. Old movie but worth it to see your take and surprisingly well produced for something made in 1954.
