See these at the Great Midwest Train Show tomorrow, 11/5/2023!
UPDATE: About half of the collection was sold at the train show, and the rest will be up on eBay later. Links will be in the Community section of my channel when ready!
Quite the collection up for repair today! This is quite a bit more varied than the previous mass repair video, and there are some really nice pieces here!

Super. All of those incredible locomotives, including some that I own, and I want that Mantua/Tyco Plymouth CR-4 Center Cab Switcher and the AHM V&T 2-4-0 J. W. Bowker steam locomotive. 💙 T.E.N.

I just acquired one of these Playart 260 based locomotives that you fixed in this video, mine was sold under the Like-Like brand. It looked nearly unused when I found it at a sale, so I snatched it up with great hope that it would work, but no joy. It seems to have the same problem (I opened it up and it looks like that same gear had a chunk missing). Thank you for this video, it’s given me some great information. I don’t know if I would have the skill to replace that part, but at least I will know where to start if I try.

It actually would've been easier if I'd used a slightly smaller 14 or 15 tooth gear, so then the mesh wouldn't have needed adjustment. The gear installation itself is pretty easy since the wheels don't have an especially tight fit, so a quick twist by hand is enough to get them quartered and adjusted after reassembling.

Hi Darth, you really do find some interesting locos! That's the first time a Mantua 0-4-0 tank has come on to my radar. I quite like the NYC colour scheme. I'll be looking out for one from now on, hopefully something might pop up here in Europe, otherwise I will have to get one of my US friends to bring one over for me. It will fit right into my vintage 1950's layout. Thanks again for the videos. All best from France. Guy

1) Man! The second 0-B-0 diesel sounds like a B-17 taking off!! 2) The 0-4-0T is probably a European shell as he Belpaire Firebox was rare in the US. One line that used them on almost all its stream was the PRR so your lettering is appropriate. Another B-17 blasting down the runway. Needs couplers, though. 3) PCC has a trolley pole with a wheel or slider contacting the trolley wire, not a pantograph. It needs a fine piece of string in a fairly loose arc from the top of the pole to the rear of the car to represent the retriever. This was used by the motorman to 1) lower the pole when going out of service 2) reverse the pole's direction when going backwards 3) place the pole back on the trolley wire if the contactor dewired. And, you've got a whole squadron of B-17's here. 4) How did you fix the commutator problem on the 0-6-0T? God! It's a whole Bomb Group!! Like to see how slow the switchers run as that is where the lived in real life. 5) The General was a Western and Atlantic, not Central Pacific locomotive, of course. Maybe you either rename it or change the tender lettering 6) F3 - you need an ultrasonic cleaner. They are very affordable. Mine set me back about 10 bucks when I went online. It can also clean your wife's jewelry and the silver she got from Grandma. As far as the paint job, I'd add some judicious weathering over the chippe areas and there you go. BTW, it is an EMD F3 Phase 1 with dynamic brakes and a steam generator for optional passenger service. www.trainweb.org/jfuhrtrain/CF7frames/F3Phases/F2F3F5chart.html On a personal note, my first HO locomotive was a second hand Gilbert PRR B6sb 0-6-0, sixty years later I've added supermagnets to the motors, replaced the X2f couplers with Kadees and clean and lubricate her about every five years and she runs great. 7) 2-8-2 - Anyone have an idea as the prototype? It's USRA-ish looking, but has a cast trailing truck rather than fabricated, but then plenty of lines bought USRA copies with cast trailing trucks in the Twenties. I would add a coupler up front as these type of locos did their share of double heading and helper and road switching duties. 8) There's plenty of Tyco tenders for sale on the net 9) F9 - Horns and Athearn mounting pads are available on line. hoseeker.net/assemblyexplosionAthearn/athearnf7ab1973.jpg Needs a front coupler, though 10) PRR BS-12 - While it doesn't have stand alone hand rails, I think an attempt at them is molded to the shell 11) RDG GP7 - Darth! It's REDDING not REEDING. As I said before, parts (motor mounts, hand rails, horns) are available on line, IIRC, RDG ran it's first generation roadswitchers long hood first, so the coupler is on the front of the locomotive. It's in the later livery, as delivered they were solid green www.readingrailroadmuseum.org/roster/images/gp7_632.jpg 12) Cab Forward - I would suggest looking up the loco on Hoseeker before you attack one, hoseeker.net/AHMRivarossiassembly/rivarossi4882cabforward1988.jpg 13) LV RS2 - Has for and aft stack which indicates an air cooled turbocharger, which was a disaster. Alco had to develop a kit with a water cooled turbo which the railroads could apply to fix the problem (side to side stack) - at Alco's expense. 14) The 2-6-0 is obviously a European loco lettered for the ATSF 15) Tuscan Red GG1's were rare, most were painted in "Brunswick Green" (officially Dark Green Locomotive Enamel 16)

The 0-4-0T was the original Mantua/Tyco shell. Instead of a Belpaire firebox, it was actually a saddle-tank on each side of the boiler while the boiler itself was closer to an USRA design. It's possible it was a fantasy model with multiple influences, which was common in the 50's. For the 0-6-0T, the wire was broken/disconnected from the commutator. All I had to do was scrape a little insulation off and resolder it. I do know that Athearn motor pads are available, but I was at a point where I couldn't wait for new ones to be mailed over, and express shipping would've cost too much. I had to get it done quick and keep the repair cost down. Sorry, I hadn't actually heard the pronunciation for the Reading Railroad before. The 2-6-0 reuses an early Marklin BR 24 plastic shell on a cheap chassis, so it is a German prototype.

Entertaining collection; had to stop at the brass steamer (time). The apparently common use of the same materials for worm and worm wheel does not bode well. How about turning up some metal wheels for the insulated side of the first loco to achieve a good root radius? How do you dispose of the lacquer thinner used to strip locos? The brass steamer is impressive. I note the universal joint instead of the usual plastic sleeve - full marks. I have always wondered at the usual plastic sleeve. Pendon's Guy Williams wrote some notes on universal joint wear characteristics as applied to his Great Western 'The Great Bear'. HIs conclusion was that, in that case at least, the wear went so far and then stopped. The loco ran exhibition trains for years. Perhaps others might share experiences. Why replace motor? Enjoyed.
@DarthSantaFe
@DarthSantaFe 8 ай бұрын
Thanks! The original wheels are working well enough in this case, although I’ve thought of trying to make my own before on some. My city has an annual chemical disposal, so once the thinner is no longer usable, I bring it there. I usually only replace motors if the originals are not worth fixing or don’t work well enough for where they’re needed.

Hooray, another great video from Darth. Where do you find these locos to work on? You mentioned you were going to "re-charge" the magnet on the Mantua 0-4-0T. How would you do that? Your layout is like mine: a small tabletop setup of two loops with crossovers on the near side. My curves are 18 and 22 inch radius and I'd heard and read that they were too tight for a larger loco like the Rivarossi cab forward, yet it seemed to run fine on your layout. I may have to rethink this. What are your curve radii?
@DarthSantaFe
@DarthSantaFe 8 ай бұрын
Sometimes you can use a couple of powerful magnets to restore the old magnet's strength. There's also someone who makes recharging devices using powerful electromagnets, which is something I'll likely get soon to do better restoration work. Rivarossi made their steam engines to European standards, which involves deep flanges and tight curves. I think the Big Boy can go down to a 15" or 16" radius if needed, and they've never had any problems on my 18" inner curve.

@DarthSantaFe

Yeah, it's actually made from the old Marklin BR 24 molds (24058) with some adjustments. Safe to say that it's not a Marklin quality chassis! Playart also made the Japanese bullet trains painted in Amtrak and the ATSF Warbonnet, so realism definitely wasn't their concern.

As long as you can get the quartering set just right, I've found that a little 2-part epoxy works pretty well to keep the wheels in place. I used that for my Rapido Turbo train repair, and it's been holding up great so far: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z7amlbepmsvbeo0.html
