I lived in Thailand and built up a $400.00 USD 27.5 carbon Chinese carbon hardtail frame for racing about 6 years ago, with the help of Ton form Storywheel Cycles in Chiang Rai.Total cost of the bike wassabout 2100.00 . I'm still riding and racing it. It's been in over 40 races and podium finishes along with a couple rough treatments of international flights and many bike in a bag bus rides to and from races in Thailand. More recently, its taken me to two 2nd place finishes in my age group in Colorado. Just two weeks ago, to a 4th place finish in my first desert race in southern Utah. It's been in several big crashes that broke my collar bone, middle finger, wrist a(nd maybe ribs?), and bent wheels and broken one set of carbon bars, but still, the frame has not cracked and doesn't even creak! I replace the bottom bracket every couple years or less with another cheap shimano BB and it is silent and smooth. BTW, I rode about 300-400 kilometers a week for more than 4 years in Thailand on it training for those races I loved to compete in the looks is pretty poor now as the paint is missing in lots of spots and down to raw carbon. I'm over 60 now and saving for a full sus bike build that will no doubt be a Chinesefull sus xc build. Can't wait for a more cushy ride!

David your 2 videos on the Trifox are great. Both the unboxing and the ride. You have great videos and you are well spoken. I had the Trifox for years and it still is sound as my first ride on it. Zero problems. Carbon frames aren't even close to as bad as people say they are. The key is they have to be bought from quality companies like Trifox and Lightcarbon. What I go by when buying Chinese carbon frames is the testing of quality they do. It really shouldn't go by prices. One thing that people don't realize is that the big name brand frame companies are extremely marked up in price. A lot of those big brand companies are actual buying the frames form Chinese companies for the same cost as someone buying one from a Chinese company directly. The big brands just put a $4,000-5,000 price tag on it. Looking into quality is the way to go and could save $3,000 or $4,000 at the same time. Lightcarbon for example does extensive testing on there frames for quality and longevity.

I recently bought a Carbonda FM936 (NS Bikes Synonym open mold) and have been very happy with it. I moved most of my old bike's parts to the new frame and added a couple of new ones. Carbonda did a nice job supplying most of the hardware needed for the suspension and headset and I sourced a couple of parts like the thru axle and shock pivot hardware. The bike has held up well to some quite rough terrain, though its mostly just an XC rig. Would not hesitate to purchase another Chinese direct frame, and will probably go back to get a gravel frame to build up in the near future.

I contemplated this for months and decided against it for a multitude of reasons. The biggest no go for me was parts availability. It would likely be a number of years before having a problem with bearings or frame components. Would they still be supplying replacement parts? Would they still be in business? I couldn’t answer either of those with certainty. So now I’m 5k into a custom Canfield balance build. Obviously the $$$ being the downside. But, your content is superb and very informational so I’m here to stay sir. Bravo.

Very unconventional to run more travel out back than in the front, I'd expect to see a 120 or even 130 up front. I'm also a little surprised that you're not running a dropper. I'd love to know some of the specifics on HT angle and ST angle. Oh, and any spacers in that shock? All said, 25 lbs is super reasonable to me, personally I'd be happy about the extra frame weight, without the RnD money the extra carbon will hopefully keep it in one piece a little longer. Awesome project, looking forward to the long term on this one!

I've bought two Chinese frames, both from 'reputable' companies. One was a crit frame, built after a couple crashes left me wanted something I wouldn't cry about destroying. I ended up liking that frame more than my Cervelo that cost 5x as much. I did have a rivet failure on the front derailleur, however, I've seen that happen on mass-market frames as well. The second was a fat tire frame, which was an N+1 bike, that I didn't need, but kind of wanted experiment with. Zero issues with that frame, but I have nothing to compare it to. I was actually thinking of building an ultralight FS XC style bike, so I could more easily stay with all these e-bike people on the climbs... the Chinese frames are on the list, but like you mention guessing parts to build a bike with good handling and tune is a bit of a gamble.

Or even using some of the more modern alloy steels. Chromoly and forming super effective tubes has come a long way. It can be argued that even today steel is the perfect bike frame material. It’s as lightweight as carbon if done right. Unfortunately trends and marketing has made titanium and steel a less desirable product in the mainstream bike consumer world. Fun stuff :)

I read that this was one of two Scott Spark Molds being tested and Scott chose the other one for production then sold the mold rights of the factory back to this factory. Which is what you have here. It is also alleged that the World Cup team rides this version of the "Spark" or at least did prior to final selection of frame. 25lbs with Deore components is not bad. Upgrading this to XTR DRIVE TRAIN, XT 4 piston brakes and Carbon wheels and light tires, light seat, carbon bars, featherweight housings, etc would easily get you into 21-22lbs. Noted that you don't have a dropper post which is fairly heavy but absolutely necessary in my opinion, but you could do a 125mm and save some weight for XC racing. Nice work mate, considering doing this myself and racing it.

I think the factory that makes this frame also makes the Scott Spark. The only difference may be Scott sends x amount of carbon fiber sheets to the factory and ask the factory to make X amount of bike frames. They probably calculated how many bikes roughly their carbon fiber sheets can be made which is part of their quality control. The said factory however, since they already have the blue prints for the bike will then make their own version using their own sourced carbon fiber sheets. That is why you see the weight difference between this frame and the Scott's original Spark

@@DaviCupra well if the factory runs an honest business they would pay Scott. But we're talking about excess production. Extra frames the factory produce that were not part of Scott's order. Put it this way, certain 'fake' Nike shoes are made in the same factory in China as the real ones Nike sells. Nike give the design and ask the factory to male 100,000 pairs. I as the factory owner make 100,000 for Nike and 20,000 with spare or cheaper material and don't tell Nike. I sell them as an off brand that look like Nike

These are all coming from the same factory regardless of name. In 2021 a t1000 carbon weave fs frame thats lighter is available. Alibaba also carries carbon suspension forks as well as dnm shocks that are on par with any xc suspension bikes. It took me three weeks in Switzerland to receive my stuff. In America it was about the same time for delivery. I can easily build this bike for under 1,500 bucks with top notch stuff. Those fox 32s are LESS than Suntour epicons. that's basically a chinese copy of a Scott Spark. to buy a similar carbon fibre Scott Spark would cost between $6500 AUD to $7600 AUD. i wonder if the Trifox can be built at half the cost of the original Scott Spark

€1,000 for the frame doesn't strike me as exactly cheap. It seems the build worked out well though so that's good. Will be interesting to see what difference some carbon wheels would make. Also Chinese imports?

I don't think 25lbs is heavy for a full sus' frame, when I started in the mid nineties 25lbs was the weight of a pro' XC race bike. Looking at what you've built I would say it's a pretty robust xc bike that will ride past many superlightweight broken bikes :-)

David David David...where do I start: 1. Where do you think most manufacturers source their frames from? Well, in this case, Specialized gets most of them from Taiwan. Sure, that makes them Taiwanese, but the Chinese consider them Chinese (Lol). 2. You get this frame and then start raiding the left-over parts' bin...really? You spend over 1K on a frame and then start throwing old parts on it. 3) Your bolts came loose...that's because YOU failed to inspect, threadlock, and tighten (to spec), all the bolts (pretty sure Specialized does that when they put a bike together). That's amateur hour. 4) You then complain about the weight...when you are using the heaviest (quality) Shimano groupset, alloy wheels, and whatever parts you scrounged up for the rest of the bike. You could have shaved three pounds just spending under 1K in carbon wheels and a lighter groupset. And had you done that, you would still be thousands under any comparable factory build. You could have also sourced a less expensive quality frame. You can get a good quality Chinese frame for around $650-750 US. You could have also done the same with carbon wheels and used a mid-level groupset and you would have ended up at around the same price with a much better and lighter bike.

@@audimaster5000 it was a (bad?) joke but in all seriousness I clip trees sometimes and bar ends would potentially snag something and rocket me over the bars. That speaks more to my sloppy bike skills than to some fatal flaw in the design. I had them back in the day (1998) and they were great for long rides on tarmac or gravel.

Its not if it will crack or snap its when. Same with all carbon frames they don't age well. Aluminium frames even snap but more likely to bend or fail on a weld. Carbon just gives up without warning that's the danger even with known brands never mind unknown. Try not to scratch it like a glass cutter you might find ally under ther to lol. Rather you than me.

Personally I think the weight would make me not buy this frame. The total bike build is not cheap enough for me to go through the trouble of building this bike when for a little more money I can buy a mainstream bike with a lighter frame. If I didn't race then yeah who cares about extra weight.

You could buy lighter components like wheels, tires and drivetrain parts to make it lighter. Its already lighter than the spark he mentioned. Looking the 900 rc comp online it weighs in at more than 12 kilos while this was about 11.6 kilos. Im sure with some lighter after market items you could get it down to 10.6 kilos without really breaking the bank, using more chinese carbon and maybe more expensive used things like used xtr pedals since they never seem to wear out along with used lightweight wheels and cheap chinese carbon seatposts that dont break. I know coz Iv'e built one myself out of all chinese carbon . It's 6 years old and still being raced.

I dont konw why you think the Chinese carbon frames are more dangerous nowadays.. maybe 7 or 8 years ago that was trueto only an extent. I lived in north Thailand and have ben around and owned chinese carbon frames . They are made in the same factories in mainland China that even Tawian manufacturers contract to nowadays. they go thru extensive testing. They use moulds that OEM use to develop their finished products, maybe one or two generations more evolved, but certainly strong. ANY carbon bike you buy with the exception of maybe two or three worldwide is carbon from China factories Every main brand you know of uses chinese carbon or carbon from Taiwan, and now even Taipei mmanufacturers are subcontracting tothey are now contracting out to mainland China for production of carbon for the biggest named brands. BTW, the Giant factory in China also makes several very big brands that you know here in USA. You'd be shocked to know which ones. Also, the main way that bike companies like Spec, Trek, Scott, KTM, Yeti, Ibis, Santa Cruz, and the others you know make money when selling bikes is thru inflating the cost of their frames. The components are all the same at various price levels that co respond to their competitors. In other words, a sram gx or Shimano xt level drivetrain is gonna cost Trek or Spec or Scott about the same to put on a bike. Its the frame that they set the price to that gives them the profit margin they desire and need to make a profit. Develoment costs money but its American and European engineers who design the frames and moulds for the high end bike frames that are made in China.
