Cheap #carbon #MTB frames under microscope. Part 1: the frame. Looking like an old Scott Spark, this is the Trifox MFM100 XC or Downcountry frame, with 120mm or 115mm rear suspension. Close look at the frame build, details and options.

I own 2 Chinese full suspension carbon frames. One is a trail (120mm travel) bike and the other an enduro bike (150mm travek). Almost 3 years on the trail bike, I have done xc races with it, and totally love it. Less than 3 months on the enduro one, the extra travel provides extra confidence on jumps, to the point I destroyed both enduro carbon rims. I love it too.

Spot on about the dropper. I was sent one of these frames to review and did a build up video on it. While picking the right dropper I went with a PNW Loam 125mm post because it has a short enough post to fit and the cool option of adjustable travel. I'm 5'8" and got a med frame. At my size I have to slam the post down for my legs to reach to pedals correctly. This post seemed to do the job for me 👍

I bought an OG Evkin XC hardtail frame from Chinese manufacturer, last year so it was around 250 USD, the first frame came with a scratch on a chainstay, I wrote them and attached the picture and they have sent the second frame for no charge the very next day. I have around 3000-4000 km on a frame, mixed terrain, road, gravel, unpaved mountain trails, the frame looks just like the day it came out the box. The only 4 issues I have with the frame are 1. Cane Creek headset bearing does not fit the top nicely, so I have to use their provided bearing with it for the top, bottom bearing fits nor problem 2. The dropout is interchangeable, available for both 135*9 or 142*12, the qr wheels fit with a quite bit of force and are removed with a similar amount of force, did not try with 142*12 but I guess the same issue will persist 3. I cannot fit 40t oval on it for short track/amateur city races (most people ride cheap mtb-s with a 3x so really need the extra gears) 4. The derailleur cable comes out of bottom of the chainstay Other than that the frame rocks, and I most of my memorable long distance rides on it

I'm on chinese carbon rims and quite happy with them. Got a few friends who are riding chinese xc full suspension frames and as far as I know some of them needed slight improvements on the pivots by a local mechanic. Also quality may vary from one frame to another, you can buy two or three of the same frame but the overall quality might be different. As for the support, if you buy via aliexpress they usually honor warranty claims (sometimes even when it was fully user error).
@graved1gger
@graved1gger 3 жыл бұрын
@@LoveMTB nice. What rim that was and it's weight, if that's not a secret? Mine are quite heavy with 2 year warranty (still have 13 month left). Also, seen quite of few broken chinese rims but usually it was light xc rims (300-320 grams for 29 rim with 23-25mm inner width) which were run on low pressures. The good part, it can be fixed, though it might cost like half of the rim itself.
@graved1gger

I'm inclined to believe that Scott frames are made in the same Chinese factory that makes these Trifox frames. My guess is that the factory takes orders from Scott and manufactures the Spark but then uses the same design with some slight modification (so that they're not direct copy) to make their own Trifox brand

Other people that tested this frame noted you should not put 120mm fork, because it's designed for 100mm (even from the model number that's clear), but they will write anything like 100-120mm to sell it. The BB gets too high, handling is compromised with the longer travel option. The overall suspension kinematics are not so good, especially once longer travel options are used. I'm very interested to know your opinions on this though.

Looking like an interesting build, I am currently looking into a full sus XC ebike build myself for general riding in aluminium though as its quite hard to get a bike ordered at the moment. However, I have just completed a full sus chinese carbon build using Dengfu frame E10 in XL and 150mm travel (ebike with bafang). Similar to the Luna X1 Been testing for 2-3 months now with no issues other than one needs to grease al linkages, locktite on key bolts holding the battery and the main chainstay linkage. All internal routing worked OK but a bit fiddly when installing as I did not have the routing tubes pre installed like the trifox one. Looking forward to what you make out of the frame. 👍🏾

Thanks MTB! I have mixed feelings about in-expensive frames from China (or any other country). My take is that if these were to be available here in the USA, they need to meet USA safety standards as other companies do. Assuming we do here (department of transportation?). There are other things to consider: reliability, warranty, taxes, safety, etc. Are other countries also implementing taxes sold online? I think these topics go beyond the bike itself. My own personal take on this.

I'm on my 6th bike build using frames and wheelsets direct from the manufacture in China. I paid $695 for the last carbon FS frame and $895 for the carbon wheelset with DT Swiss 350 hubs and arrow blade spokes. With the savings on the frame and wheelset, I was able to afford a Sram XX1 Drivetrain and a $900 fork, and complete a very high-end build that cost at least $9000 at ALL retails stores for $4750. I beat the hell out of my bikes all over Colorado, Arizona, and the Mid-West, and not 1 problem with the frame after a few crashes. If you have $3500 for a brand name frame and $2500 for a Wheelset - Great! I'm one of the guys that needs to save $$ where I can, so I go for discount frames.

@@LoveMTB Cheers for the reply! Should gave guessed there are loads of options. Be interesting to see the build. Seeing as a blur cc is way out of my price, this seems like a way to get a very good cc bike at a decent price. I'd prob go for those cheap adjustible travel forks for maximum downcountry without ruining the climbing.

Lots of people point out that most carbon frames are made in China. Does that imply they are made by the same factory/people and same methods? To me, this frame looks a bit rough and the hardware a little cheesy but hard to tell on a video.

That's a weird way to weigh the frame. No manufacturer weighs the seatpost clamp and an axle to determine the frame weight. Weigh them seperately and it helps the viewers much more. I 'm interested in seeing this frame built up as I was considering it as a project myself.

I just purchased a Lightcarbon model LCFS 911 frame that looks almost identical to this frame except the rear axle area is more the shape of a scott Spark. It is a bit lighter than this and is advertised as 1980 grams for my medium. It was shipped from China and I paid an additional $200.00 or thereabouts for shipping and the box came in eleven days. There wasn't a single dent in the box and not a single scratch or chip of paint missing. All the parts were included. The woman who works for Lightcarbon, Wendy , was extremely prompt in returning my emails and sent shipping tracking numbers to me as well. I'm extremey pleased with mine and would recommend them to anyone who wants this type of style frame.

Idk. Cable under bottom bracket might rub into the carbon. And quality control could be bad. Hm. Not for me.

do you call a cheap carbon frame " cheap carbon " ? or do you call it " carbon frame that`s cheaper than all the others "? ( i`m not even sure that makes sense ) LOL becase it depends on expectations. if you have the money to buy an S-works epic HT frame ( 2500 dollars ) you will, but for the rest of us, a 700 dollar carbon frame is as good as it`s gonna get. Lightweight aluminum frames do exist, but they can be quite expensive. So, if you`re not a particularly heavy of aggressive rider, a carbon frame that`s cheaper can be all the bike you`ll ever need.

I got my scott spark rc 900 carbon HMX frame with fox nude shock, fox 32 step cast fork and scott twinloc system for $2000 and the bike rides like a million bucks, that was 2 years ago and im sure it would be hard to find now for that price but $1000 seems excessive for a cheap, low quality, horrible quality control china frame where there are so many videos of people getting hurt from them breaking, i've owned a couple china frames in the past and personally would never cheap out again. Now that the new scott spark frame came out you should start seeing 2017-2021 frames being sold for half decent prices soon, would be a much better idea then this china frame if you ask me

@@LoveMTB The scott spark is the lightest full suspension bike you can buy, its about a full pound lighter then this china frame, so if you crash and smash the frame on some rocks, or if you take a turn really fast and smash your chainstays on a tree there definitely is a chance of breaking it. Also scott has different level of carbon quality for the spark, the lightest and most expensive is the HMX-SL but even nino schurter rides the HMX because its the most robust for the weight, this guy you speak of most likely has the HMX-SL frame which is so light its basically only meant for high end racers for race day, any story you read of the spark frame breaking is most likely with the HMX-SL frame. That being said im 190 lbs and ride very hard and have not had a single hiccup with my HMX frame, when comparing my scott bike to my past china frames the stiffness and quality difference is through the roof. I seen the way you ride your bikes you are no novice, I personally do not feel its worth it for you to save some money and ride the china frame the same way you do with your norco frames, a frame like this I think is better suited for a novice lightweight rider. I just really want people to understand the main risk with carbon fiber is quality control and china frames have the least amount of quality control, a reputable brand like scott has insanely good quality control in comparison. China's main focus is to copy the frame, build them up as fast as possible, hand them out for free to youtubers to put a good word in and they make a shit ton of money

@@LoveMTB NP i feel I have to give some input from my experience over the years. I know it seems like im trying to scare you from riding the bike but thats not my goal, I think if you decide to ride it just make sure you keep a good eye on all the stress points of the frame, do regular checkups, chances are most likely the frame will survive and be fine since the frame is actually quite heavy compared to the spark. I also feel its just not a good time for everybody to be supporting china, this is one of the main reasons the world is as crappy as it is today : / Take care!

The UCI requirements to pass the tests are not enough for carbon frames, so if the brand is not well known they might be using open-mold frames and might not be doing tests home, only by the manufacturer, and relying only in them for this is not a good idea, so good luck with that.

My only issue with far Eastern carbon is that there's no way to tell what you're getting and customer service is going to be dire (if there's any at all). I do think that there are some decent carbon brands out there though. I've got bars and seatpost and they're solid.
