Cross modulate an LFO with another LFO to give a generative effect that never plays the same modulation twice.

Randomizing MIDI velocities works ESPECIALLY well when creating percussion with multisampled drum kits (Like Ableton's Session Drums). It's so easy to just fill up two bars with hi-hats, randomize their velocity and create a really unique sounding groove with just a little bit of manual tweaking. Great video David! Thanks!

Nobody ever talks about this, but the Envelope Follower works like a universal sidechain where you can use the output of one track to dynamically automate any parameter within that track's effect chain or another track's chain entirely. So for instance you throw it on one track and then map it to the gain on one of the bands on EQ Eight on another track and you've created a sidechained dynamic EQ. Basically it means the dynamics of anything can be used to control any parameter elsewhere. The possibilities of that are endless.

You can also randomize velocity of midi notes in the clip itself. That way you can vary randomness without losing accented notes.

Thank you again David. Great tips. You are able to clearly and efficiently share your ideas. I didn't know that you could save entire tracks. I have never tried grouping instruments ( I will now) and I haven't explored the possibilities of the drum rack but I now see the potential. A question: What do you, or can you, do when the tempo is not correct, either that Live selects during a capture or if you record without the metronome and 120 is automatically assigned?
@leroycarr92 жыл бұрын
I realize my question left out the essential part: I meant that the notes don't then correspond with the measures, my playing is out of sync with the actual bar lines. What I do now is just re-record, but I sometimes miss a certain feeling then.

Hi man i have one question related to sample playback. I can’t find the answer, maybe you can help? I play handpans (big ufo-like metal melodic-percussion instrumens with tonefields). My idea is to “transfer” real instrument into Ableton Push with samples. Everything works great except one thing. Imagine that I place one handpan note into one pad. When i hit the pad - the note is played. When i hit it second time it “chokes” the sustain tail of the first hit. Can i make them “stack” together, like layering them by hitting one pad? I didnt find the option for that in Simpler or Sampler. Thank you!

I always had problems with midi in Live. The timing was tied to the audio buffer, always seemed sloppy, not what I played. I got really frustrated with midi in Live that I abandoned the software at version 9. I used a Digitakt, Bitwig, Renoise and Rosetta Sequencer suite on ios instead. I liked your tips, wish I knew them a few years ago.

Thanks, I learned some nice tips. I wonder what happened to the ability to click and hold control and make velocity progressive from note to note. It was in Live 10 but gone in Live 11. I liked that feature. But Live 11 with the scale option is very useful and has some new features I love. I just wish I could still vary velocity in a linear way like before, kind of for a drum roll getting louder. If someone knows how to do this in Live 11 I would like to know. Thanks again for this video.
@patkelly83092 жыл бұрын
Can't you just have each velocity node increasing left to right in an ascending pattern? Just do it in the midi clip...sorry if I've misunderstood your question.
@mistral-unizion-music2 жыл бұрын
@@patkelly8309 It is possible to click on each individualy but in Live 10 we could hold control while we clicked the mouse to choose from which note's velocity we start and then click again at the desired increased or decreased velocity where we want it to end over any number of notes. It made all those note's velocity ramp up or down in a linear pattern from low to high or the other way arround. So it was quick to make an ascending velocity pattern for many notes at once. Now it seems we must click every note's velocity to change those one by one. There must be a way but that definitly changed when they added the Chance feature for random velocity. But I don't use this feature. I want full control of my velocities. Thanks for trying to help. I will try to ask Ableton directly.

Hi David, new viewer and loving the content. I'm most interested in your fascination with the drum rack's flexibility and I was thinking it would be great to see an in depth video about it. It would be extra interesting if you took that video as a challenge to see how far you can go personally with exploiting that flexibility. A good reference video for the kind of depth I mean is Ned Rush's video on creating drones in Ableton with no source material at all (MIDI or Audio). Really inspiring to see these unique and advanced takes on things overlooked by the average user. Reference video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h8qCltOD3b-ue2Q.html
