I had a Quarter Horse mare that was a big 3 yr old I was training, and roping off of. She got colic and became very ill. Our vet treated her and said it was up to her, but keep her moving, don't let her lay down. I walked her in circles in the round pen for about 8 hrs, basically all night, and I'll never forget her raising her tail and blasting poo 15 ft behind her. She was saved. I'm not ashamed to say a tough ol' boy hugged her neck and cried......I fed her earlier today and scratched her head a bit. She's now 28 yrs old and is just a pet, but make no mistake, Dixie is part of the family....

Give that young man a raise! 👍 Heck, I'm a veterinary tech by trade, and there's no way I'd try giving a horse mineral oil orally. Keep them walking, wait for the veterinarian.

Hey DeWayne! I lost my horse to Colic in November. I called my vet immediately and he got there in 15 minutes. He did the mineral oil thing and it didn’t help. We loaded him on a trailer and took him on a 2 hour ride to the University of Illinois hospital. They opened him up and were able to untwist his colon, but it stayed gray. They told me the best thing to do for him was to put him down. That hurt me bad. I’ve been with you since you only had about 10,000 subscribers. You’ve taught me a lot! Thank you.

i bought my first horse in 1976, a six year old brown and white paint named Tootsie Roll. I had her stabled at a friends house and one night about six months later I got a call from him saying Tootsie laid down and they couldn't get her up. When I arrived she was laboring with her breathing. The vet had been called but he couldn't get there until about 7am and it was already after 4am. My friend and I had no idea what was wrong or what to do. The vet did say it might be colic and to get her up and walk her. Well, we couldn't get her up and she passed away before the vet arrived. It was a hard colic lesson for all involved. Thanks for putting out this video. I hope it saves someone a lot pain and grief.

So glad hearing Biscuit is fine. I have an 7 yr old AQHA gelding who I show and ride for pleasure. He lives at home and is a special horse to me. He coliced last September and had a 270” rotation where is small intestine meet his large. He was treated at home and pooped right after the treatment but was still clearly in pain. There is an amazing hospital just a few miles from my home-this was very lucky. He had surgery and he had fully recovered and doing even better than before the surgery thanks to the amazing vets at Wilheit and Fries in Pecular Mo.

A friend who is an equine vet, here in Florida, always reminds his clients to add salt to their grain, when the weather is going to turn cold. It gets them to drink more and helps with digestion. He figured out that colics spiked during a change to cold weather.

Good information to put out there. You can also put your ear to their flank (or I should say back part of stomach) and listen for intestinal sounds. If you don’t hear any gut sounds of digestion, be very concerned.

I've kept many, many kinds of animals my whole life and I agree wholeheartedly that you need to know what's normal behavior so that you'll recognize abnormal behavior because it may mean something is wrong. Good advice.

Know your horse is good advice. My young gelding was usually 1st to thr barn and he was last and then seemed like hips were our he wasn't tracking correctly. Scratched my head listened to his gut and had a colic. But unless I knew him I would have missed it.

Been there with colic. I have lost one from it and recently saved one. Had meds on me to relax him and got him in a trailer and he did poop. I'm sure his case was minor that day but your correct that now I really keep an eye on how he acts so we don't have a repeat episode.

Thank you Dwayne, in my heart I need to relay this to ya. My Dad at 66, we found out has aggressive bladder cancer. He's ok and we are on the path to getting it out to prevent it from spreading. The doctors blamed it on his cigar smoking all his life. We don't have much cancer at all in our family so this was an eye opener. Bless you & thank you. Hey Dwayne. As a 24yr young man that has the privilege of working with horses, I look forwards to you checking on all of us. It gives me inspiration in my daily life. I resonate with what you have to say about the animals and I work on incorporating your wisdom in my interactions with them. We've lost some horses over the years that I have been volunteering, despite our best efforts. Sometimes it just happens that way. I'm not really sure where I'm going right now in life, but I'm certain there's a way forwards that works out. You said in an earlier video that it's okay to "act your age" in regards to how much you can reasonably do. I think there's truth to that; It's good to be realistic with yourself. I'm always just looking to try and understand how much of the world I can carry. It takes a lot of spirit and strength. Thanks for what you post here, and the work you do outside of it. Poor Biscuit. I’ve had colic all my life … I can only imagine how much worse it is for a larger horse. I hope all is well now. Humans & horses do have similarities. As a nurse, you are so correct, humans have feeding tubes passed into their stomachs but we always double check that it is in place, & not in the lungs, where a human or a horse can asphyxiate. Humans are also ‘walked’ after surgery, so they pass gas LOL Also horse’s eyes get blepharitis from flies & wind, so they use hypochlorous acid spray to fight bacteria, which humans use too. Humans are also starting to use ketamine (horse anesthetic) for depression. Also if a horse has cataracts, it doesn’t matter whether a vet, or a human eye surgeon operates. So I agree with you on paying attention to detail, when a horse can’t tell you in words what’s going on. We all need to pay more attention.

Around every August my mare gets mild colic from the barometric pressure changes. This is during our monsoons in north Phoenix. Praise God I haven't had to call the vet yet. The mare is now 27 and it happens every year.

Hey, Old Cowboy, Thanks, great information.

This is an area I’ve had some experience in, good and bad. Dewayne, you’re spot on, in my opinion, on everything you’ve said here. From reading signs of colic to knowing your animals. Like humans and dogs, horses have different traits and personalities and even quirks. Some prefer to lay down on a nice day and some prefer to keep their eyes peeled for what’s going on around them. Some will do things others won’t. So you get to know the signs of something being off with one of them. We’ve saved some and lost some from colic. One of the biggest gut punches we experienced was catching a “been there, done that” kind of mare who was a solid, experienced horse, too late with colic and all our walking and the vet couldn’t save her. Then we’ve had those few who just walking them to the trailer and going for a ride to the barn or around the mile section will get things moving. Sometimes you swear if you want to get one to poop is just load them in a trailer you just cleaned out! Talking about oiling one up, we always left that to our vet. He’d cautiously work that slick hose up the nose and into the gut. He’d even blow on the end and listen and smell for gut signs prior to hooking the end to the pump. Anyway, I’m rambling but it sounds like you’ve got the makings of a good hand in Noah. He’s learning and making right decisions. Thanks for sharing!

Great bit of info Dewayne. I had an incident couple years ago on a family friends operation where we came upon a younger foal that caulicked. In that case we managed to mix a vet recommended dose of banamine, and mineral oil with yogurt to entire her to swallow it down. Most important was to keep her on her feet and not alow her to roll. Important for anyone in the industry to recognize symptoms and know what they can do to minimize the issue.

I know there is a marker that retailers use to see if a bill is counterfeit. It turns one color if it's real and another color if it's not. My horse has never colic'd, thank goodness. Deathly afraid of it! Had him 22 years now. He got West Nile a month after I got him. Spent a lot of time crying, hoping he would pull thru. He sliced his eyelid on barbed wire one time. Came running when I got there. He knows his Mama will take care of him ❤ He's my best boy. I would def know if something was up with him. 💕💕

You should look into Total Equine horse feed. It’s a natural, forage based, highly palatable and nutritious feed. The extruded form makes the feed pop which horses love. Get yourself a couple of bags. With your channel you could probably get them to sponsor you. They’re a good brand.

A little over a year ago we had an older horse die from colic. She was fine and looking good the night before. Early next morning I went out to do chores and she was laying down, sweaty, and breathing hard. This was on a Sunday, and I called my vet on their emergency line. I got the horse up on her feet. The vet arrived and started to check the horse out when suddenly the horse collapsed on the ground. The vet said she was to far gone. We had to put the horse down. She was a healthy 25 year old horse that never had a serious health problem.

This is so true.. that’s why I never let my horse feed while out and about while rounding up cattle.. only because I know I’ll be running my horse and don’t want him feeding on natural grass.. which has tons of jagged edges.. plus I try not to let him drink too much water nor put him back to work right after drinking water.. 😫

Spasmodic colic isn't the same as compaction colic. Compaction is more serious. Spasmodic colic is when the food has become fermented in the intestines and has produced gas as a result. Hydration is key in both cases. Dry foods including hay have the effect of dehydrating the gut lining. Dry grass, very cold water, eating droppings, snow are just a few triggers. Pays to look at their droppings regularly for moisture content. Some horses just naturally do not drink enough water and added to dry feedstuffs makes for a problem. I'm retired vet nurse and I've seen more cases that I wish I had.

Yeah colic is _really_ not good for horses and its sometimes difficult to diagnose properly because the symptoms are shared by many things that can cause distress to animal In addition there's so many different types of horse colic that also makes it difficult to diagnose properly and treat properly

Just like you said know your horse any changes means something. You have a kids grandkids cousins grandparents. Changes in what normal in a day. Maybe not ready to talk, same with the younger ones have like get up to do regular things and all of a sudden he or she not talking stand off away, something bothers them just don't know how to ask for advice or help. Like horses try to figure it out. Don't let it feature build up to 😢 .simply ask I've had bullies in school latter in life is that Bullie happy No you are they don't what happy when their not. Butt Bullies need help also alot of energy put energy to good use. I not making sense but time will show.😮

Crazy for me to say horses run no coral free, horses sitting idle to long, possibly gas build up.. never had a horse love ❤️ them all my life. Grandpa said when horses where I live not used anymore Hay Burners no money sad but true all now highway and bypass 😢. I m 64 years old I'd work for free just a shelter and I help cook.
