This music is raw. Nothing but instruments and original voices. Music nowadays is fake and bad voices are perfected or distorted with auto tune. The further back you go from today's music, you find real talent.

This was a HUGE hit when it came out in 1970. Mungo Jerry is the name of the group - they took their name from a poem by the American ex-pat T.S. Eliot called "Mungojerrie and Rumpleteaser" - It was originally published in a book of cat themed poems called "Old Possum's Book of Practical; Cats" The Broadway musical Cats is based on it. It was a cute song back "in the olden days" but the line, "Have a drink, have a drive" didn't age well.444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444

You'd be surprised that modern pop music isnt more complex than what Mungo Jerry is doing here. At least from a musical perspective. Also, this may be already known, but Mungo Jerry was doing a jugband throwback thing here. Late 60s- early 70s pop rock bands weren't routinely throwing washboards and jug instrumentation into their music.

Though this older music may sound basic and simple to your ears, it takes true talent to make. Each member of the group is a true musician that’s put thousands of hours into their craft. And groups back then didn’t have the technology in the studio to clean up off tempo’s and make the timing perfect through a computer program. The voices you heard were theirs, and had to stand on their own without modulation, auto tune or anything of the sort. Usually, people that sold records and got popular back then, did so based on their talent. Of course image has always been important, but now, there are recording “artists” that have no musical ability, and many are mediocre singers at best, but they have a certain look, and portray a certain image and with the help of studio magic, they are made to sound like they have talent It sucks the soul out of the music. Most of the songs that make the top 40 are produced by just a handful of people and it all starts to get homogeneous if you ask me. There’s is still plenty of talent and plenty of good music now days, but it doesn’t blow up and hit the mainstream nearly as much as it should. One great thing about the internet is these artists can get their music out there and can even make a living doing it. They just don’t become mega stars. Which, for most people, that’s probs my not a bad thing.
