Visually Timing a Cannabis Plants Peak Harvest
Professor DeBacco
Plant Parts to Consider
Stigmas
Trichomes
Size/Development
Stigmas
A female part of the flower. It is the sticky where the pollen lands and starts the fertilization process.
In cannabis this structure looks like these fine white fuzzy structures that look like a whisker.
Trichomes
Trichomes are small mushroom shaped glands that are responsible for producing cannabinoids and terpenes.
Coat the surface having a resin provides a frontline defense against fungus, insects and hungry herbivores.
Bud Size and Development
On a plant there will be variability in the buds on the plant.
The goal is to produce large and dense buds consistently on a plant, which can be influenced by light exposure to the bud.
To maximize production pruning style and harvest process play a role on the final product.

With all due respect, you gave us some lovely definitions and examples of stigmas, trichomes and buds, but you didn't tell us what clues to look for in these three plant parts to tell us when the plant is ready for peak harvest

Hello, I have been checking my plants (outside) with a loupe. They trichomes are cloudy but 30% have not turned amber, although I think they are only days away. The colas are really large and I am intrigued (first year - total novice. This has been more of a gardening project. My husband smokes, I don't). We are supposed to get a frost tonight. Should I cut? Sorry; thank you! Also, the only place we have to dry them is in the basement and I'm afraid they are going to smell up the house bad. We can smell them all over the yard even though they are in a small area.
@phat-kid
@phat-kid Жыл бұрын
yes you should cut. i hope you didnt let them freeze. 15% amber is just fine. yours are 70% meaning you've already lost a lot of potency as the amber means the thc is degrading into cbn, meaning you'll have more of a narcotic couchlock high. if that's what your husband needs, for sleep for example, 40% amber is plenty to get that effect.
@phat-kid
@phat-kid Жыл бұрын
look up kyle kushman's video and harvesting and drying. they will smell up your house. there are a lot of things you can do to mask the smell, but that's just a reality. the best thing would be to invest into carbon air filters. especially since the colas are large, you should be prudent about drying them properly so they don't get mold, and not drying them too fast so they don't taste like hay.

@@phat-kid Dude, God bless. I appreciate all you guys' knowledge base.Thank you for your personal reply - much appreciated. My brother was just over (he's 70; I'm 63 - geezers rock!), and he thought they were barely cloudy. Now, when I look at them, I guess they don't look "milky" white to any degree. I guess we still have about a week to go. Had a frost two nights ago. We bound them together and put inside large contractor bags until the morning. They didn't get any frost. It is starting to get into the early 40s at night, so I am running out of time. Thanks, again. Best to you. I think this is my first and maybe last year. Lots of work and then there's the smell and drying, which is the most difficult part.

I took a look at them again on a sunday morning ,early and they had looks almost grey or brown from a distance...? I got up to them and there were thousands of afids all over the buds of the plant! They have tore up every last buds and deficated all over the plants! :>( So this year i have used some all natural insecticide and the buds look ggreat and no afids this year! :/ I couldnt tell until i got it inside and was able ot take an even closer look? I guess its time to invest in a better magnifying glass?lol I did just pull the plant and have it hanging right now. But is it best to trim the plant now while its fresh or wait until its dried before trimming? HELP?LOL

I believe i picked it a bit too soon. It is the , middle September but i should have left it until the end of the month ......maybe? Plenty of tricombs and a good number all over the plant has its mushroom like top and all fully errect on 90% of the plant. Near the tops of each stalk as im growing outdoors in a garden ,and top my plants for multiple buds/tops. the top buds at the top of each stalk has some that were just starting to bend over a bit but still had a number just forming. The lower buds near the middle and lower parts of the plant all had a white haze and so on lol but I think if i would have waited til most were starting to bend over and turn a bit dark it would have been better.......no?
