Both 6 speeds have the same size input . A big problem with the g56 is case flex. It would allow the countershaft gear to climb the input gear and split the case. I had this happen in my 08. Also all the synchro guides and the tower are tac welded very poorly and split as well

Depends on the gearing, my parents didn't lug there on purpose, but it could do it empty. Span of 35 years, 3 diesel trucks, owned/used consecutively (two Cummins; 12v 92 and 24v 05, and one 97 7.3L F350) All manual. None of them had any issues at the collective average of 300k miles. Though the 7.3 took the most abuse; 32ft gooseneck with a cab over Deere and a Detroit diesel powered spreader. Most people want to start them in 1st for some reason lol the 92 we had could bark the tires on the 2-3 shift on command Getrag and was basically a 13" dump truck clutch

I had a 07.5 with the g56 and really liked it. Idling in neutral It rattled like a bag of marbles til you mashed the clutch pedals. I only had the truck 3 years but I hauled some heavy loads with it and the truck never even hiccuped. A 3 axle trailer with 14 round bales was the biggest load I ever towed and it never even lost any RPM’s in. Those control at 65mph. The wife was really impressed when she rode along on that trip. She never really understood why I insisted on a stick shift or a Cummins but she said “now I understand why you wanted this kind of truck”.

Excellent video!!!!!!! One important thing to remember is higher gearing does not always mean better fuel milage. Engines can be over geared and get worse fuel milage. The most important thing to remember is correct engine RPM at a certain MPH range. HP and torque need to be taken into consideration when choosing gearing. Ultimately you want a low enough first and reverse with the correct final drive gear ratio, with enough ratios in between to accomplish the task the truck is expected to perform. Diesels like 6 or more gears for moving heavy weight because of their narrow power range. If a vehicle is slightly under geared there will be no noticeable increase in fuel usage. If slightly over geared the engine can struggle and cause increased fuel consumption. Also, the speed of the drive shaft in relationship to the engine crankshaft does not automatically decrease or increase fuel milage ("over drive") but is just a term that is used to describe the crankshaft turning slower than the drive shaft as power is transmitted through the transmission. Weight of the vehicle, wind resistance, engine HP and torque, rear end gear ratio and tire diameter all need to be taken into consideration when choosing the final engine RPM. A transmission does not have to be "over driven" to have all the correct gear ratios that are needed for a specific application. This is why there are different rear end gear ratios and or tire diameters available.

Great video, I can't help but think that the benefit of the cast steel case over aluminium is actually more about the gear shafts not "walking" and creating excessive backlash and adversely binding the engagement area of the gears. Aluminum is stiff, but cast steel would be better at maintaining the overall structural integrity needed in such a high torque area.

Every 6000 miles I add 1 qt. So far most I have towed combined weight is about 28000. I just hauled a d2 5j dozer 8 hours out of town. Once it starts leaking more I think I'm just going to overhaul the nv5600 as I have blown up at least 3 nv4500s. I tow heavy all the time my truck never sees daily driving.

The nv4500 5th gear nut will not grenade the transmission if it backs off. If 2wd, pull the driveshaft and tail housing and simply screw the nut back on. YOU MUST USE GL4 TRANS FLUID! It’s like $300 for a full rebuild kit and very easy. You must buy a bearing puller and heavy duty lock ring pliers along with a new main shaft.

Great info, I’m a huge manual dodge guy and have multiple of each manuals besides the getrag. You hit all the points I could think of. Nv4500s are great for lower hp or stockish pickups, the only competition use where an nv4500 fits very well is sled pulling. Guys run tons of power through them by only using direct drive and installing 4.56-4.88 gears. For anyone putting together a street truck though the nv5600 is arguably the best choice. I’ve got one In my 03 that has around 750hp and it’s been awesome. All factory 300k mile trans. Worst part about an nv5600 imo is just how complex of transmission it is and how it’s harder to rebuild than any other dodge manual. Cody alberect has really been backing the capabilities of a g56, supposedly the early models with the lower ratio od are stronger and he can swap later .74 models to the .79 ratio. Between that and his new input shaft he’s released a g56 may be a great option for a hot rod stick shift truck

I had a 1993 1st gen with the Getrag. I bought it with 29k miles and the Getrag had the “sound of imminent death” . I bought the extended warranty because I didn’t expect it to last more than a couple of months. The tranny finally died at 179k miles. It was only at stock power for the first month I owned it. Torque at the rear wheels was just north of 1k lb/ft for a couple of years before it died. Believe it or not, I ran Rotella 5w40 synthetic in the tranny (engine too). I filled it through the shifter so that the oil level was greater than just filling it through the fill plug on the side.

Shifting up at 2000 RPM 2nd = 1000 to 1020rpm 3rd = 1075 4th = 1150rpm 5th = 1475rpm I have noticed that fifth gear is only half a gear before but recording this definitely hammers that fact home. I would love if my overdrive was .73:1 or .72:1 like the baby 13 🤗 RTLOO-913 Ideal pickup transmission. Aluminium housing yessir 👍

My mid year 2003 has the NV4500. 5th gear fell off at around 275k. Barely ever lugged it. It's just one of those inevitable things & it won't grenade the trans, you just won't have overdrive. Drove it like that for 2 weeks. 5th is all the way in the back of the trans, technically not even in the main case and is easily fixable by removing the rear tail housing. 5th gear will just be hanging out on the back of the shaft. For reference, mine is a 4x4 model. Slid it back on, added the nut fix & it's now pushing 294k.

I am not completely convinced that lugging them has any effect on the synchros. Synchros are only used when shifting from one gear to the next

Can’t wait for the complete episodes of the g56 install I daily my first gen was a automatic put a nv4500 I like the nv4500 compared to the getgrag I have one in my other 1st gen Seeing the video I want to get the g56 as well Also if I can find. A good deal a nv5600 and a zf6 to see how they run 💨

So many options! I'm hoping to try as many as i can haha

Yea I don't know why more people aren't putting G56 in their first gens. Maybe the thinking of all the fab/wiring work scares them away. Personally I would swap one in my 06 to get rid of the 48RE before my first gen. Can't wait to see how yours performs!

Great looking truck buddy. I just got a used NV 5600 6 speed tonight. I bought it for $1,000 it seems to be in great condition and was said to have driven to the parking spot where it was taken out. Thank you for the input it's nice to know that with the inch and 3/8 input shaft I have one of the best transmissions there is to put in my 2001 3500

I have had the nv 4500 and 5600. I like the 4500 better for daily driving and light loads , it shifts better and with 5 speeds you shift less. For heavy towing the 5600 is nicer . Ive got gear vendors overdrive s behind them both and if you have deep gears 4.10s or deeper the overdrive is really nice when empty. The guys do shift faster for sure.

Great video I personally have an nv4500 in my first gen and I have had to deal with the 5th gear nut I don’t wanna step on anyone’s toes but when you lose the nut you do lose 5th but the transmission isn’t destroyed you can easily fix this with the transmission in the truck I like these transmission because of how easy I can find them in Utah

They did also change where reverse was on the 2 different g56 trans. The first Gen reverse was beside 1st gear and the 2nd Gen was beside 2. Small clarification that is not really noteworthy but figured I’d tell you 🤙🏼
@decentgarage2 жыл бұрын
This is actually not true. All g56's from 05.5+ had reverse to the bottom left next to 2nd 👍

i bought my dodge in 1990 an currently have over 400,000 miles on the G360 trans. it's been good. the only thing i did was modify the vent for it. Just ran a hose up the firewall. cause the check ball was leaking.

Make sure to replace clutch components if you get any sort of vibration through it seen the g56 cracking bell housings before from bad clutches

If I wasn't doing a Eaton with overdrive I would be putting a brownie box behind a factory Getrag. A well taken care of properly driven G360 is hard to beat.

I've heard the complaints about the aluminum casing on the g56. As if every other transmission used in modern trucks isn't aluminum as well. I wouldn't call it a weakness as i've never seen one break simply because it was aluminum vs steel.

I have a 92 f350 dually with a 91.5 Cummins running the zf5. South bend clutch I put new synchros and bearings and new reverse gear. Got 4.10 rears, it was a gasser. feels like when the light turns green I have to get to 3200 rpm’s in third gear to pass pedestrians on the sidewalk.

NV5600 with a big input is the best close to factory trans behind a 12v IMO. Throw in a dual disc clutch and they're beafy as hell, safe to 500whp/ 1000ftlbs all day. The G56 shifts better but not as robust. I think the best 6 speed manual trans you can put behind a 12v is actually a zf6, need some aftermarket parts to make it work but they shift as well as a g56 but are as strong as an nv5600.

I ordered a 2005.5 model when it first became available. When the dealer later contacted me they the dreaded Good News/Bad scenario. The truck had arrived but Dodge had initiated a system wide hold on deliveries due to reports of the G56 having catastrophic failures within days of driving off the lot. I was so disappointed but decided to wait for the cause of the failures to be determined before cancelling the order. Luckily, the problem was due to the factory lubricant fill being inadequate. Once they topped up the fluid I went and picked up the truck. Unfortunately withing a couple of months the synchro's for L failed and had to be repaired under warranty. Perhaps it was partially my fault although based on the fact there is now 350,000 miles on the vehicle with NO other transmission issues and the first clutch lasted 250,000, I would have to believe I'm fairly easy on my equipment. One thing that's been an ongoing annoyance ever since the warranty trans rebuild is difficulty shifting into 2nd gear when at a dead stop. Its like the shift collar gets jammed and cannot engage all the way.
