Some quick sniper shots under pressure while hunting NZ. 308 & 223 doing the job nicely. Good friends making memories in the hills with a nice red deer hind and some goats taken for wild game meat.‪@controlledrecoil-nzhunting‬ behind the camera and even editing this one for me. What a legend!!

Nice shot 😁. I see so many people shoot behind the shoulder and then watch the deer run. How far would you attempt a deer that with your 223? I'm a relatively good shot, but not that experienced as a hunter! I use a 243 win and I'm comfortable out to 400yds, but that's on steel at the moment.
@ChasetheWildNZ
@ChasetheWildNZ Жыл бұрын
If you use a decent frangible bullet like an eldx, ELDm and TMK of decent weight we have taken deer cleanly with shoulder shots at 300-400y without issue.

Thoughts on 223 for taking deer, and what ammunition would you recommend with barrel with 8-1 twist
@ChasetheWildNZ
@ChasetheWildNZ 11 ай бұрын
Can you hand load? If so.. a 75gr eldm or similar in eldx is a great option. Taken many red deer with 223 using those bullets. If it's a big stag then something harder with more penetration works well. Of course shot placement and the impact velocity make a huge difference.

Forgive me for my ignorance but why do you use rifles with such short barrels would you not lose or not have as much velocity
@ChasetheWildNZ
@ChasetheWildNZ Жыл бұрын
They are actually longer than they look. The suppressors here are mostly over barrel type and stick out only 3-4" forward.

@@ChasetheWildNZ Im from NZ and looking for a good rifle for Fellow deer. I have been looking at both the Tikka .223 and the Howa .223 can you provide any recommendation on best option and ammo available here in nz? I currently use a 7mm08 but find it hard to get any factory ammo less than 150grain. I find my 7mm too heavy for Fellow, and would much prefer something more accurate and lighter for taking neck and head shots. Most my hunting would be 100 - 150m max! Thanks in advance
@ChasetheWildNZ
@ChasetheWildNZ Жыл бұрын
You really can't go long with a tikka but the hows is also a good option. Good 10shot mags for howa too if you do lots of shooting. My pick would still be the tikka in. 1-8 twist
@robhowardlivefree5519
@robhowardlivefree5519 Жыл бұрын
@@ChasetheWildNZ So is the 1-8 twist better suited to heavier grain projectile (60-70grain)? What barrel length do you recommend, and does a suppressor effect performance at all? cheers
@ChasetheWildNZ
@ChasetheWildNZ Жыл бұрын
Yes the faster twist is needed for going up to say a 75gr ELDm. Barrel length depends on your main usage. If it's for bush stalking and closer ranges then 20" and shorter. If your a longer range shooter then 20" and above. I like 20" as a good alrounder

I can't understand why you'd need to adjust up 2 MOA for a shot at 250m? Is it zeroed at 50m?
@ChasetheWildNZ
@ChasetheWildNZ Жыл бұрын
308 zeroed at 100m. Run it through a ballistic app with a 1.8" sight height and itl be in the ball park of 2-3moa

@@ChasetheWildNZ thanks mate. I use a 25-06 in Oz for deer. 1" high at 100m and 1.5" low at 300m. No adjustment required for me, but I'm only using 75gn bullets.
