Hi everyone! My name is Vasil and I am restoring my 1974 Columbia 45. In this episode I am removing large sections of wood from the galley, dinette, and taking off the headliner. Taking care of this demolition before I take my maiden voyage is crucial because it will allow me to remove bulky items once I get to a dock.

Looking good. In my opinion you're correct in gutting the boat in this condition. It will make life a lot easier. Full ahead!

As long as you have the footage the longer vlog is better as we get to see 1 more destruction 2 more of the boat & its condition 3 what blank canvas you'll be working with in the future. Full steam ahead I say - loving this channel.

I have two suggestions. When you work in some area, like that dining area, you can put camera on tripod and make a timelapse, this would be cool. Another one is rather important, those pieces of wood you removed are bulkheads, not complete bulkheads though but they give additional strength and stability. You will have to put them back at some point and attach to the hull with fiberglass.

Great feedback! I’m looking at getting a couple more GoPros to do exactly what you just said. Not being gear obsessed is hard, especially when starting out. So much to learn as well. You guys are really helping with that as well. Speaking of the bulkheads, I’m in a tough spot. I need to figure out what can be taken out without loosing a ton of structural support. This boat is going to get a complete interior redesign, so I might need to put up temporary support beams while this happens.

I like the longer videos. I find you tear down of the interior very interesting as I have a 1973 Columbia 45. I believe my is built slightly different (i.e. more fiberglass) as it was before the 1973 Oil Embargo. Keep up the good work.

Domenic, I'm happy to hear you are enjoying the videos! I'm working VERY hard to make them. The 1973 Oil embargo was huge. I was researching everything I could the night before I bought this boat. You are absolutely right, most of the boats post the embargo were build like crap for many years. Luckily this one started production in 1973 and was finished in 1974. Our hulls should be identical, the inside is where the cutting of the corners began. The hard work will continue.

I like the vids being a bit longer. I love a blank slate to work with. With the expense of wood you may want to keep some of that around. haha

Thank you for the feedback, much appreciated! Agreed on the wood front, I'm trying to keep as much as I can. At least the higher quality wood. It's amazing how much cheap wood was used on this boat.

Haha! I sure am, everything outside of the captains quarters pretty much needs to be dismantled. Captain's quarters will get its destruction in due time as well. I feel like this is the best way to do a proper restoration/buildout.

Vasil, I'm not 100% sure but that large piece of wood may be structural or at least adding strength to the fiberglass moulded cupboards. Good luck.
@ambiguousglobetrotter
@ambiguousglobetrotter Жыл бұрын
I felt the same way, sitting there scratching my head trying to figure out if its structural or not lol. At this point, I'm leaning towards pulling everything out to get that black canvas. It's going to be very important for the design phase to see everything.

Those are bulkheads and indeed structural.

@ambiguousglobetrotter Жыл бұрын
@@psydafke Thanks for letting me know, that certainly helps. I'll need to figure out some sort of temporary reinforcement once that piece is out.

@@ambiguousglobetrotter best thing is to recreate that shape, and fiberglass it back in to the hull. either with marine grade multiplex or the foam sandwich I think “parlay revival” has a good instruction on rebuilding bulkheads.
@ambiguousglobetrotter
@ambiguousglobetrotter Жыл бұрын
@@psydafke long term, that is the plan. Remake structural components out of light weight material. In the short term however, I will have to figure out a reinforcement system for the hull in the areas where bulkheads will be removed. It’s highly likely that it will be several months during which the boat will be gutted and support will be needed for the hull to withstand the pressure from the waves in the bay. If the boat was in dry dock, I probably wouldn’t have to worry about this, but being out on the water really complicated things tremendously. Thank you for the input! I need all the information I can get at the moment.

I hope you have a blueprint if the original design so you can reassemble or redesign the interior placement of galley, salon,head, and cabins. I. Am sure you have a plan in mind, good video but be cautious with dust and fiberglassing without a mask

I have a CD with the plans for this boat from the factory. I was able to get in contact with someone on the forums who had a Columbia 45. He was extremely nice and sent over a copy of the DVD with a ton of information for this boat. Now I just need a CD player for my laptop lol... Thanks for the safety tip, I really do need to be more careful and have PPE.

as i said- you should go carbon ONLY IF you will find it for a good price, dont go new, its too expensive in 'Murica your main target for rigging is Dyneema first and if you get lucky-carbon mast
@ambiguousglobetrotter
@ambiguousglobetrotter Жыл бұрын
Looking around, seems like there a good amount of used carbon masts on the market. I would love to go with a new one, but you're right, the cost is quite high. Would be nice if I could eventually get a sponsor to offset some of that cost. Until then, I'll be on the hunt for a good used one.
