Testing a couple of ideas to get power from the track up into the trains. I'm using these to convert battery operated trains to track power but they can equally be used for directional lighting, coach/cab lights and improved running

I lit up a REA (Railway Express Agency) coach with LED lighting. I made my own pickups out of some scrap copper I salvaged from an old computer. I used the strip LED lighting (3 LED's per cut) with about 12 LED's, a mini full wave bridge rectifier and a 3300uF capacitor for flicker free non directional lighting. With strip LED's they have the ballast resistors already built into each 3 LED sections. I had to paint some yellow acrylic paint over the bright white LED's to tone down the lights. Now it looks like old timey yellow light. My wife said it looked more natural with the yellow lighting. Cheers from W Rusty Lane K9POW in eastern Tennessee

Hi Duncan...Cheers mate :) I just try stuff out..If it works, I'll put it here. If it doesn't then nobody knows..haha. As an example, I just melted that other toy steam train trying to make it have real smoke...lol. Just don't tell anyone ;) All the best mate....Tom

Hi Tom Great tutorial on adding power and lights to a train. I'll be keeping this video for an idea I have for a Knightwing plastic kit and maybe some coaches. Cheers Paul

Thanks very much Dave. Needs a little refinement but it's ideal for running the HSTs around the loop and I have some control over the speeds. I'll be fitting these in all my conversions. Thanks again and all the best....Tom

Bogie must be nonconductive to reverse axles. It's more complicated with older all metal frames where pickups need to be insulated from frame. Like the wire wrapping around axle. Maybe a small spring with wire soldered to it and conductive lube on axle?

Hi Ed, yes, absolutely. Thankfully, these bogies are all plastic (as they are toy conversions). For the high speed trains I have continuous wiring through each unit and I've bought some ready made spring pick-ups (the same as the ones you mentioned). These are generally used for coach lighting so I'm testing the trains with all wheel pick-ups to find out if there will be enough power supplied to run the motor. If so, this should allow for very smooth running. There's also much less friction than the wiper style pick-ups.Thanks very much for taking the time to watch and leave a comment...it's much appreciated. All the best....Tom

Hi Tom, but what about the 6v battery operated motor ? all dc power usually output around 0 to 12v on tracks ...did you change the motor or is it the same of the toy version? i wrote from italy and LE frecciarossa looks like well vs acme certainly more expensive..all the best Nicola!

Hi Nick, this is a very interesting subject. At the moment I'm using the same motor and I have no problems. I will be changing the motor at some time in the future for a better quality. I will certainly make sure the new motor is best for 12V Thanks and all the best.....Tom
