This is showing an overview of an upcoming project. Calling it the DIY Poor Man's ironworker. Using a Dayton 12" plate shear, harbor freight trailer jack, and harbor freight pipe threader for the automation. This could be a cool DIY homemade metal cutter shear ripper for steel or aluminum.

Looks like a cool build. Can't wait to see it done. Air over hydro ram from the freight might be cool too.

This looks to be an interesting build! I built a similar one with a hole punch 20 yrs ago, used Scotchman punches and dies. It would do a one inch hole in half inch A36. Then I ran into a new 6509-24M Scotchman with single phase and a bunch of tooling for 10k. Just recently stripped the cylinder and 5hp motor off my self built and scrapped it. You can go a long ways with what you're building there.
@turbocobra
@turbocobra 6 жыл бұрын
Well this would just be something to do small stuff wiht more for the home shop, and not spend a bunch of money on it. Why did you scrap the scotchman?

Ramsey Customs - turbocobra Oh I didn't scrap the Scotchman, it's a fine machine. Scrapped my homebuilt one. It worked fine, but my space is at a premium and the hydraulic cylinder, 5hp motor and pump were worth more to me than I would have got had I sold it in our small "cheap people" area. Will be interesting to see what that can shear. On my small hand shear like yours I mounted an adjustable 1/4x4 plate edgewise on the inlet side the full length of it with clearance for 1/4 stock, drilled a 1" hole through it for access to the rod shear so that no matter how narrow or wide the stock is you don't have to dick with the little round hold down, just shove your metal in and shear it.

Cool Gary, Say what about powering it up with a HF air-over Hyd. 12 ton jack? Nice work on the the tear down and clean up of this plate shear.

i definitely thought about that, but just wanted to try something that is electrically actuated. we will see how it all works out! Thanks for watching

Very nice, I'm loving all of these, DIY/laser cut flatpack/HFmod stuff that's been coming out. Odd question though, I have a milled out 300zx plenum, are you still able to do the top covers?

Is it gonna be a portable shear or an iron worker? There’s a big difference but if it is gonna be an iron worker I’d definitely be interested depending on how it comes out

Our "ironworker" concept is based on several machines that we both have that are usually combined into one large unit. Punching, Shearing, Bending etc... hence the "poor man's workaround" solution is to use several of the smaller, more affordable machines that accomplish identical tasks without the $20k + price tag.

On mine I built a rest that bolts on to the left side, you just loosen the bolts and it slides down on to them and levels up perfectly with the blade, then put a removable stop at the back which is squared up perfectly with the blade, this way you can rest sheet on it and cut a perfect right angle quickly.

can you email me a pic of what you are describing? gary@ramseycustoms.com my plan is to bolt some angle iron to the left side, with a series of 3/8th holes and make a fence that also serves as the replacement for hte chrome stop to keep it from tipping up

Top (fold down) bottom (fold up) electrodes for spot welding small panels? Maybe the electrodes would be long enough to extend the reach somewhat? Thanks looks like a cool project!

The top electrode will be hinged and for spot welding this electrode will rotate down and be locked in place, then the bottom electrode is hinged and will rotate up and locked into place, both lock locations are predetermined in order for both electrode to make contact at their points. Then raise up the shear mechanism stick your panels to be spot welded and lower the shear mechanism back down hit the spot weld energize switch which is controlled by a timer to set the duration of electricity for thinner or thicker materials. Thanks

a 50 ton plus cpapacity ironworker sells for scrap prices around here. while this build is cool, its honestly not close to an iron worker. i have two, a hydraulic and an old Buffalo 96 ton mechanical one. both were picked up for the cost of hauling them out of where they were.
