The plaintiff says she hired the defendant to fix her dock. He took her money, began the work, and then took off. She later found out he was not licensed and was being sued. She’s suing for her money back. The defendant says he told the plaintiff he wasn’t licensed to perform certain tasks, so the plaintiff dumped his tools in the street.

Plaintiff's claims are laughable. She, like so many people, use unlicensed and/or unskilled labor because they want the job done cheaply with no permit fees. Then after the fact, the repairs and fines incurred turn out to be more expensive than just paying a licensed person to do the job right the first time. These people never learn. Always trying to cut corners.

Same with people claiming they though a person was licensed to do X, Y, and Z. The county has a list of everyones contractors license online; before I hire anyone, I check to verify they have a license. That $500 bid sounds better than the $900 one but it'll bite you in the ass if they aren't licensed.

She was getting it cheaper knowing he wasn't licensed and now that there's a problem she's complaining that he wasn't. Honestly, it seems like she knew he wasn't licensed and was going to try to bully him into doing what she wants when she wants or she'd file an official complaint. That's not saying he's completely innocent but she can't claim she is either.

She did a lot of research after the fact!!!! She knew exactly what she was doing by hiring a painter to replace the decking. i don't agree with the judge in this case. we have a house on the lake and lots of people hire someone to replace the decking when they know the entire dock needs replacing. even if he didn't order the materials, his work to dismantle the dock decking and haul it all away was worth something.

A perfect example of a homeowner wanting a champagne job done on a beer budget! JM nailed it when she asked how the plaintiff thought he was qualified, just because he was working at the neighbors. She knew darn well he had no license and that he had not pulled a permit, and if she didn't, she sure knew how to turn a blind eye to it all. She wouldn't had said 'Boo' if things had gone the way she wanted, should have done her research beforehand. Zero empathy for her!

Getting a licensed and insured contractor costs more money. She knew exactly what she was doing talking to the handyman next door. There is no way I'm going to assume someone I see painting, is qualified to repair a dock, and just "take his word" that he is licensed and insured. As Judge Millian says sometimes: "Lo barato sale caro" which means "What's cheap turns out expensive."

She thought that she could get the job done for much cheaper and when she demanded a bill and didn't get it the very same day that she asked she flew off the handle she knew that by going to the county and trying to file a complaint against this man that they would look him up and see that he wasn't license something she already knew I don't think the Judge should have awarded her the full amount back she cost him a $2,000 fine and he hauled off for old dock for free that counts for something she's out of her mind

If the deck is shot, most of the time the base isn't far and sometime worse, as it remains full time under water? He stabilized the deck so the new crew could see the original position of the deck. If he replaced the deck, she would have claimed it was his work that caused the pilings to be damaged? Now he took on more than he's capable to do, and I'm sure used the money for other jobs, that's why he couldn't produce the receipts paid for ordered materials.

Funny these people have no problem with these guys being unlicensed until things go south. Not all work requires a license either. Homeowners are also ultimately responsible for permits. A contractor can pull them (best) but if they don't, the owner is not off the hook. I always check for licenses, insurance and I check with the town about the permits- or pull them myself. A frame on top won't stabilize any pilings. Before accepting the job, it is very easy to see the pilings. This is WHY you want an experienced, licensed and insured contactor. I highly doubt he got into any water. I like how the judge beat him up on the materials issue. She was right. She should have pressed him on "where did you buy them- I will call them now. If you lie, I am dismissing this case and holding you in contempt. Under oath, "DID YOU BUY THESE MATERIALS." He was very clearly trying and failing to deceive her. This strong willed homeowner was trying to get work done cheaply. They are both characters who deserve each other. No sympathy for either. I will say however that there are some contractors you don't want to mess with. Throwing his tools near the street and embarrassing and his reputation on TV could send some over the edge- for real.

I like the point she mentioned: The person has to be licensed and have a marine and sea wall license. Now the viewers can have insight on this matter.. a side point.. Someone could have gotten injured on her dock because he failed to use the proper materials.. I am sure the She can rest easy knowing that she did the right thing.. 😁 It pays to do things the right way from the start..
