When I have good compression, I don't pay attention to the cylinder walls. My only concern with a borescope would be to check for excess carbon buildup around the exhaust ports.

Man, I love your content. Fixing to try and bring an evinrude 88 back to life.

Those led lights around the camera do tend to amplify things like simple discoloration and turn them into possible damages but I still like to use the horoscope as it allows at least to rule out many problems. Your videos are always very informative and greatly appreciated !

I don't have a scope so I usually just go by the compression test but I don't have the skills that you do or the tools😅

Eventually I'm going to get one of those inspection cameras with side camera when I start hunting for a replacement outboard/powerhead. I'll keep that in mind, hopefully the one I buy allows adjustable light output to avoid washing out the image. Leakdown test helped me quickly identify a buggered V4 crossflow cylinder wall before investing any money in it whereas the compression test showed within +/-10 on all cylinders before I bought it. Long straight gouge like a locating pin or broken ring on the exhaust port side. No damage to cylinder head. Zero problems found on the exhaust side of the piston looking through the exhaust housing and none on the intake side of piston when looking through the bypass cover. It almost looked like someone just disassembled the powerhead, put a replacement std cylinder size piston in it, and assembled the powerhead back. Doubt this was what happened because it was a salty bugger that last came from the Great Lakes.

cylinder leak test is best way to test cylinders

For a rebore block those cylinders looks like it was burning right. I would try and hone the score areas where it was hard up against the wall.

I've got a 76 Evinrude 115hp v4 on my Holiday 18. Runs great cept for the lower unit was letting in h20 which im resealing (thanks to your videos). I have a sneaking suspicion that it was rebuilt. The outer exhaust cover has orange gasket sealer around the perimeter which probably isn't factory? Im going to check with my bore scope and see if I can see any #s on the pistons. Thing runs 36-38 mph though. Sucks it had milky lower unit oil but ill get it goin soon as the parts get in. Any thoughts on the orange gasket sealer?
