In our series finale on Ayrton Senna, James, Joe, and Nolan relive that fateful moment on May 1, 1994, when Ayrton Senna crashed while driving in the San Marino Grand Prix. Senna’s’ untimely death at Imola was foreshadowed by multiple devastating crashes, and the death of fellow F1 driver, Roland Ratzenberger, who died on the same track just days before Senna. It was, maybe, the worst weekend in Formula 1 history. To this day, Senna continues to be an icon, and his namesake remains as being synonyms with greatness.

You know... I used to love F1 when I was a kid and I loved Senna... my grandparents used to travel a lot to Brazil and one of my most prized possessions is a National blue cap Ayrton used to wear... that weekend was awful and I stopped watching F1 altogether... I think it struck me so bad that I didn’t even learn how to drive... I love cars and car culture but I just can’t drive and I always attribute that to seeing my favorite race driver die that weekend... I feel what you feel James...

When I went to the 2018 Australian Grand Prix, I noticed all the official and VERY exclusive team stores, side-by-side. Ferrari, Mercedes, Red Bull. But there was only ONE driver store. And that was Senna's. Not any other driver stores in that area. That's how popular he still is to this day, not only in my home country Brazil but everywhere else. To the fans, it's not only about the numbers but all of the other Legendary package he has. I watched him dying live on TV at 9 years old and it deeply affected me, he was my childhood hero. Same story around the world, especially in Japan who also mourned his death very dearly. it was surreal and I think it changed mine and many lives forever, more than what we'd like to admit. I love that Americans are getting to know Senna. Most Europeans and Australians know him but with you guys it gives me hope one day Hollywood will make an award winning movie about (maybe Rush alike). You should look up "The Test" on youtube, it's a video of Senna testing Indy's Penske.

Nicely done guys. As a 39 year old guy that used to watch the F1 races live and also watching that dreadful race in Imola I can completely understand how hard it must have been to put this series together. As a big Senna fan (not just the driver but also the human being) I am glad you guys managed to cover his career and celebrate his many achievements. The F1 championship lost a great deal of interest with his passing with the cars becoming more and more advanced, but the world lost a great individual as a whole.

Great series chaps, I was 6 months old when Jim Clark was killed at Hockenheim, Clark was the legend that I grew up reading articles about when I was a young fella. I tended to be a Prost fan in the Eighties because of his smooth "As slow as possible, as fast as necessary", attitude. In an era when the cars were terribly unreliable and very easy to break. It was a driving style very similar to Clark, Fangio and later Jenson Button. Ayrton Senna was divisive, but so exciting to watch, whether you loved him or not. Rather like The Michael was and Max Verstappen is today I have heard a legend that Ayrton had James Hunt's Austin A35 van on 2 wheels around Belgrave Square in London late at night around British Grand Prix time one year.

Small comment for video game fans: Sega was also sponsoring Williams at that time and one of the liveries had a painting like if there was a hole on the cockpit where you could see Sonic little legs on the pedals, like if it was Sonic driving the car. Pretty awesome. i was 13 y.o. back than and grew up playing Mega Drive/Genesis.

Senna definitely didn't die on impact, as he moved his head once after the crash and the head of the F1 medical team Sid Watkins recounts that Senna sighed after they lifted him from his car onto the ground. The authorities also maintain that he was still alive in the hospital, and that they actually restarted his heart once at the hospital.

Some time after the crash french driver Erik Comas came speeding out of the pits. It is still debated why this happened. Some say it was by mistake, some say he wanted to help the man that saved his life in 1992 after a brutal crash during the Belgian Grand Prix. Comas withdrew from the race. He wouldn't talk about what he had seen at Senna's crash site for ten years.
