In one specific section of his book, Tomlinson details that to qualify for the Increment, a certain amount of time must be served with MI6: “...SAS and SBS personnel must have served for at least five years and have reached the rank of sergeant. They are security vetted by MI6 and given a short induction course into the function and objectives of the service. If they have not already learnt surveillance skills, they take a three-week course at the Fort. Back at their bases in Hereford and Poole, their already substantial military skills are fine-tuned. They learn how to use improvised explosives and sabotage techniques, as well as advanced VIP protection skills, study guerilla warfare organisation and practise advanced insertion techniques - for example, high-altitude parachuting from commercial aircraft or covert landings from submarines.
Advanced civilian qualifications are acquired: several of the SBS Increment have commercial ship's skipper’s tickets in their alias name, enabling them legally to hire, say, a fishing trawler.” Recruiters for E Squadron are also known to choose a wide variety of individuals to fill their vacancies, hiring from countries such as Fiji, Malta and Jamaica, as well as British citizens of India, Yemen and Nigeria, to name a few. Additionally, women are also regularly recruited in these positions, with hired individuals needing to be able to fit in anywhere, easily, with one source telling The Sun, “Women are often the best at this sort of work. If a group of blokes turns up, it always looks suspicious. We haven’t had a female Bond in the films, but there are already lots in real life.” Welcome to Wars of the World....

@christopherjones6607 no, the SAS didn't make Delta. A US Army Special Forces Officer named Charles Alvin Beckwith created Delta after he served on exchange with 22 SAS, where he commanded 3 Troop, A Squadron. His career is quite incredible. He served in Korea, then the Indonesia Confrontation, Malaysia Emergency, Vietnam War, etc. Let's give credit where it's due.

Delta's original selection and structure were modelled on the SAS, but Delta went on to become its own distinct unit. One that has more in common with the OSS than the SAS today.

@@andyedison2416 Below an extract from Jack Murph's BLUE LIGHT series, SOFREP. "Delta Force continued to evolve, developing not as an offshoot of British special operations, but as a distinctly American unit that had more in common with the OSS than the SAS. The British influence has always been there, though, largely due to Beckwith. Beckwith believed in big-boy rules and individual self-discipline, something he picked up from his time with the SAS. “He learned a lot over there,” Jim said. “In the stockade, we trained a lot with live fire. Operators would go about their business in and out of the main building, walking around with loaded guns in their holsters all the time, in condition one. If you had an accidental discharge, you were out of the unit before the sun went down. You were gone.”“We went by internal nicknames and call signs, not rank. However, even with the apparent lack of formal rank titles and common first names used between seniors and juniors in the operational elements, I never saw a breakdown in the internal discipline, because in Delta, it was there. Everyone had the freedom to offer opinions and bring up solutions to problems."

Steve Mitchell was a Sgt, not a commissioned officer. He was also a first class pillock. He originally served in the Royal Green jackets. His operational planning for the Bravo Two Zero patrol was absolutely gash, he was 'advised' to reconsider using vehicles, but he insisted on the patrol tabbing with massive weight-a ridiculous concept in the desert. He didn't even suss out the climatic conditions that the patrol would face in the desert- hot by day, freezing by night, so they weren't kitted out appropriately. His book is full of gross exaggeration and dishonesty. Chris Ryan's book also contains some gross exaggeration. Neither is welcome at Hereford as a result of going public with their books.

The "Increment" personnel are pulled from 22SAS, SBS, SRR (prev 14 Int. Co.), and other UKSF groups such as JSF Aviation Wing and 16th Signals for liaison to MI5, MI6 and GCHQ operations on an as needs basis. It's a pretty amorphous group due to the specialized nature of missions required, though it's oversight structure is more established. It is totally separate from 22SAS Counter Revolutionary Warfare Team or the established 22SAS Squadrons. It is definitely not a secret squadron within 22SAS. It exists separate to them and other UKSF groups, drawing on all. MI6 needs a qualified pilot or a ship captain for an operation? That man likely comes from one of the UKSF groups above into the Increment for secondement. MI5 needs a domestic terrorist to be assassinated at the behest of UK Gov? Guess who gets that work? Or overseas wet work for MI6? Same. Put it this way, if MI6 has a Double O section, it's formed from Increment men. IF. What you also have to understand is UKSF falls under Defense Ministry, MI5 under Home Office and MI6 under Foreign Office as far as government structure is concerned so Increment responsibility is shared between them and overseen all the way up to COBRA - Cabinet Office Briefing Room. Yes, they typically undergo some extra training and enhanced security vetting by whoever is using them. After that any more training, language work etc. will be on an as-needs basis. And once the work is done back to their UKSF units they will go.

3:40 i remember reading an autobiography of a 14 int agent. The author said they want agents who could drink in a pub in a Northern Ireland and not stand out or raise suspicions. It takes a certain personality to do this. And young lads with short haircuts who go to the gym stand out a mile. Any young lad who was gobby and gets into a fight would be a liability.

Pathfinders in the uk are part of the parachute regiment, they are just another unit within the regiment of the parachute regiment, they are not special forces, but the cream of the parachute regiment, they deal in advanced reconnaissance. However all regiments in the British army have reconnaissance platoons that deal in advance reconnaissance which are just as good, if not better. As they are the cream of their regiments. All foreign office diplomats have to undergo developed vetting. Nothing new. They come round your house and look at your bookshelves to see whether you read Barbara Cartland or Marx. Check your bank accounts and medical and dental records - including family members. They want to know if you or family members have problems that may make you susceptible to foreign intelligence service bribes. Psychological testing for integrity and honesty is all part of the procedure. Questions on your sex life and peculiar interests. Even relatively low level chancery attaches who deal with Ambassador correspondence or who require access to secret comms equipment need this. Nothing new. Been like this for decades.

As I understand it the fiercely independent Kiwi men who were the original LRDG troopers were chosen for their rugged self-reliance & I suppose their ability to improvise in difficult situations.Good choice I would say. They were my favourite warriors in schoolboy comic days, still feel proud of those lads .

Green Berets modeled after SAS, Seals modeled after SBS. Delta Force is a culmination of Army, Air Force, Marine, Navy special operators. The Brits are some absolutely excellent warfighters !!! And great examples of how to conduct urself in combat, and how to structure a combat unit !!

You know that "Special Forces" was first developed and deployed in Italy and Norway by a joint Canadian / American element, right? They even made a movie about it....I'd post a link but can't on this lame site.

Green Berets were not modeled after the SAS, as the Green Berets are quite unique in the world in terms of their mission focus, which is FID. The Green Berets trace their lineage back to the First Special Service Force of WWII, a joint US/Canadian outfit. The SEALs are not based on the SBS either. You can visit the National UDT SEAL Museum in Fort Pierce, Florida. While there are several foriegn entities that helped influence the creation of the SEAL Teams, the SBS weren't one of them. The SEAL Teams were a culmination of the UDT Frogmen of WWII and Korea.

Delta was modelled on the UK SAS, after the founder, Charles Beckwith (a Green Beret) spent time in Hereford on exchange. The US Green Berets and SEALs have their own distinct history and roles. The SEALs developed from WWII Underwater Demolition Teams (UDT), who cleared beach obstacles prior to amphibious landings. They adopted a special operations role in '62... as the US Navy did not have an unconventional and direct action warfare unit for amphibious operations to meet the demands of proxy wars of the Cold War era. Similarly, the Green Berets evolved from WWII OSS (Office of Strategic Services). Primarily, their mission was coordinating with, and supporting, partisan units fighting against the Axis nations. The UK didn't have a direct equivalent of the Green Berets until the very recent founding of the Ranger Regt. That unit has the role of delivering training and support to foreign forces. Whilst that has been done before, under the umbrella of 'defence diplomacy', UK forces didn't typically embed into foreign forces for combat missions - the Rangers can.

Preceding all of these, the very first were the Chindits in Burma. Without them, no special forces units would exist. Before them it was believed small teams couldnt do anything effective. The Chindits did, proving it possible and it went from there.

Similar to CAG and The Seals, there would be no Delta if it wasn’t for the Reg(22 SAS). Charging Charley Beckwith who founded and created CAG (Delta) had been seconded to 22 ,passed selection and led a troop realised the USA needed something just like the SAS and this is why CAG are just like 22 in every way possible. E squadron are what was once known as ‘The Det’,closest thing to James Bond you will find in real life.

Great video. 👍 Well done. Don't get me wrong I'm not claiming to be SAS. I wasn't. I was a technician/radio op with the Royal Signals att to 264 Sqn for 16 years, which is basically partnered which the SAS. I can 100% confirm that there's a "E SQN" but they were always known as and not to be confused with the Netflix series Top Boy but they were always known as the "Top Boys" . You can check my credentials if necessary on the Internet. They basically did our dirty work. I don't know how u got this info but it's impressive. If I can help in anyway in future vids I'd happily help. I'm currently working on a vid about the Deepcut murders.
