I think the notion of all life stages isn't as widespread in Europe as it is in USA. A European brand I know makes lots of age specific dog and cat food, and only started making all life stages when they introduced their products in the USA and found that people demanded all life stages.

Their definition of 'holistic' cracks me up when they offer 26 grain-free products. I suppose if a person asked them they'd say they use the "whole pea", "whole sweet potato", or "whole pumpkin" without an acid bath as well... 😂

@@AnimalDocRea I'm just happy they responded to you and provided the dry matter nutrition numbers. I actually filled out their online submission form a couple weeks ago for this exact formula you just reviewed and never received a reply. I tend to not want to spend money on a product when the company can't be bothered to answer basic questions. Thanks as always doc!

Thank you again, Dr Rea!! I thought you would find this interesting--when I adopted my puppy he was being fed raw by the breeder. I continued to feed him this, but he was always having reflux issues and throwing up. He also had a very rough, unhealthy coat. I was spending a ridiculous amount of $$$$ on fresh and freeze-dried raw. I eventually took him to the vet and she convinced me to take him off the raw and feed him Science Diet kibble instead. That was last October and his GI issues literally improved overnight. Also, his coat is now like silk. I am petting him right now and it is so nice to feel a soft, silky coat and have a happy dog that can sleep without waking up all the time from reflux.

and bonus, I am no longer spending $150 to $200 a month to feed a small pug!!! omg, I fell for the "holistic" greenwashing advertising!!! 🙄It feels so good to buy a big bag of kibble now for half the price, and it last sooooo much longer!!

@TJ-kz1ul what kills me is that for $200 people don’t realize they probably can get a home cooked meal plan by a boarded veterinarian nutritionist specific to their pet!

@@AnimalDocReaI was spending more on his food than I do on myself in a month!!! If it were actually helping him, I'd do it again (my dog is my life) but it was harming him which is the part that really is upsetting.

Hi Dr. Rea, can you please review the gently cooked food Country Cookhouse by caravan pet. I am looking for a nutritious fresh food for my 3 year old dog. Since I am from Canada, there are limited options of what’s out there. I recently purchased a few portions of the chicken recipes, just want to make sure it’s ok before introducing it to him. Request: Well I’m not going to give this to my dog anymore. I tried this for the last month when I couldn’t get PPP Bright minds senior. Is there a senior nutrient chart ? Can you look at Ppp 7+ , Science Diet 7+ and maybe Origen ? Senior food is as confusing as all the others.

What exactly do you have to ask a food company to get these nutrients? Can their customer service answer this or do we ask to speak to their nutritionist?

@AnimalDocRea Would you at sometime please do a review of wet can dog food? I've been trying to get nutrition information on Nutrisource Beef and Rice wet can dog food without luck. I know you did a dry kibble review of Nutrisource as I mentioned to another nutritionist, but no luck in getting one on can food as I'm sure the nutrition is different, right from kibble to can of the same dog food? I stand corrected if this isn't the case. And, any other wet can dog food recommendations. Our dog is one that cannot eat kibble even soaked in warm water or broth. Please and thank you.

Convert cans to dry matter basis and you can compare anything.

@@sandypolsky5683 I’ll add in some canned foods for you, but I still like you to know why it is they look different. You can also just ask companies to send you the information on dry matter if you don’t feel Comfortable converting

Would you be able to take a look at Petaluma dog food? I discovered that my picky eater REALLY likes baked dog food, and it was the only baked food I found that seems to hit all the marks.

Hi! Thank you for this review! I switched my husky from this exact food to Purina Proplan Large Breed Sensitive Stomach Salmon and rice because he was dealing with acid reflux every couple of weeks on the Earthborn. The acid reflux stopped once I switched him to Purina. I just contacted Purina because I noticed the calcium and phosphorus on the guaranteed analysis were listed as minimums and I asked them for the levels of both on a dry matter basis. I was a little surprised. The calcium in this specific Proplan formula is 1.49% and the phosphorus is 1.19%. This is actually higher than the Earthborn. Is this Purina formula to excessive? Thank you so much for your channel!

Yes, those numbers would be in excess for an adult. But you need to consider other factors such as his clinical response. I’d consult your vet and I’d venture to say they would suggest doing routine labs vs make another diet change but that is for them to decide.

@@AnimalDocRea Thank you for your reply! He just had his lab work done in April and his vet said everything looked good. I was just surprised that Purina had these excessive levels.

@@AnimalDocRea I hope you didn’t take that question wrong…. I just was curious because and the Petfood puzzle guy really concentrate on the nutrients, so I just thought since the phosphorus and calcium was lower in Earthborn that it might be the better option because of those levels.

Good video. Technically, a dog food that is 22-30% protein, calcium 0.7 - 1.0% and phosphorus 0.6 - 0.8% would be suitable for all life stages. The cost of achieving those narrow parameters would probably be prohibitive. Happy Purrsday!

6:15 - if they're adding taurine because of nDCM, then it's fair to criticize them using FEDIAF guidelines instead of AAFCO. FEDIAF does have separate categories for active adults, inactive adults and senior dogs. And methionine and cysteine levels do differ in inactive guidelines versus active guidelines. Not a requirements for Dr. Rea's PSS, but if Earthborn is going to deceive pet parents then they should know FEDIAF differ from AAFCO

I want tp apologize for being overly harsh, but sometimes with these companies (Acana and Orijen uploads nutritional studies and manufacturing guidelines on their own websites for some reason, just site: URL PDF and you will see them) and I'm like "wait.. you know about all of this this yet you can't make a 8/10 dog food?" So it kind of feels like that with taurine here. Feels like Midwestern Petfoods is aware European pet food have a different manufacturing guideline than the US does.

@@AnimalDocRea Yeah, I just mostly feel bad for pet parents who are not aware the "small companies" can make good food if they really want to. And don't really know how to highlight "yeah... these are subtle cues the stockholders and the board know better and you as the customer have the right to demand more accountability."

2:55 - I do care about ecological sustainability but haven't found a single brand which isn't guilty of greeenwashing (see Bes D. Marx's "Green Capitalism is a Lie" playlist). So it's safe to ignore the marketing gimmicks.

Our Channging Climate also has videos on greenwashinng but not a fan of the over-depedendence on stock footage from Storyblocks. Much rather prefer the personalized aesthetics of Andrewism channel.

@@TJ-kz1ul Yeah, I highly doubt the quality of the processed meat will get better unless these companies actually care about labour rights or land rights. The smaller companies haven't convinced me they are any better than Cargill or Tyson.
