In some models of ThinkPads, Lenovo decided to throw a junky slab of touchpad into the machine. In this video, I am showing you how to switch the trackpad to the classic 3-button one that is equipped on some of the newer models.

The problem with the "FrankenPad" upgrade on this computer, is the nubs on the middle button of the new pad, WILL make contact with the display with just the slightest pressure. The fix for this, is to place a couple of rubber sticky feet along the top of the display bezel. I almost found this out the hard way, and could've ruined a brand new 1018p IPS display. Fortunately, I discovered the problem pretty quickly, and was able to fix it. Also..... After I learned the proper way of using the factory "ClunkPad", I found that I liked it MUCH better, than a standard touchpad. I do NOT like trackpads in general, and usually disable them on my personal laptops. I prefer using a mouse. The ClunkPad works just fine, with the trackpoint. I spent a whole day w/out a mouse, and just the ClunkPad, and track point. Found that it actually works marvelously together. Try learning to use the "ClunkPad", before replacing it. I have a W540, and a W540/1, and will be swapping the FrankenPad out for the original ClunkPad, on the W540/1.

Thank you very much! The best tutorial for this job on here. Good, clear instructions and close-ups when needed. My replacement trackpad is on the way. Can't wait to install it. Should have done this years ago! BTW I noted a tip from elsewhere that, when sourcing the replacement, find a Synaptics model not an Alps model. The Synaptics version has a stippled backplate, the Alps is smooth and shiny.

You do NOT want to use a flat-head screwdriver, if you mess up you can really screw up your keyboard, palmrest, etc. Just buy a nylon spudger from iFixit, that's what I used. 40 series keyboard's are a massive pain to install, you 100% want a non-metallic spudger here. I'm surprised you got it pretty easily. Usually it bulges in one spot or you have to sort of push in between the keys to get the keyboard 100% in place. I damaged a T440p keyboard and palmrest a while back by using a metallic screwdriver. Just don't do it. Also, make sure your new TouchPad is a Synaptics touchpad, not an Alps one. The drivers in Windows 10 don't work with the Alps touchpad. It's easy to see if it's an Alps or Synaptics, on the bottom it should have a dotted backplate. If it has a smooth backplate, it's an Alps. It looks had you have the Synaptics one in your video, but if you have an Alps the drivers won't work right.

Great video. Any idea why I have only one trackpad wire instead of 2 going to the motherboard like you have. Wondering if I need an additional harness because I have an open slot

I think you should be good. I believe one of them connects to the color sensor, which some models do not have.

@@qiaojiezheng5310 ok cool thanks for the reply. well maybe I'll check my ribbon cable or reinstall the driver. Maybe that will fix it, because the new trackpad doesn't work yet. Fingers crossed

MY w540 has no screws on top of the keyboard. In fact I have owned many T series and none of them have top screws either. My model has the high res screen with the color calibration camera . Is that why there are no screws and will that complicate the swapping of the touch pad?? Thanks for any responses. .

is there an updated drive for this? It used to work fine, but the latest windows auto update just broke it and every time windows updates the driver automatically, it overwrites the one i apply manually. Hoping there's a permanent solution out there, as the hardware works fine.

Great video! My machine seems like it is stuck taking the top cover off. I double checked that I have removed all of the screws but I don't want to apply too much force and right underneath the camera/face scanner it seems like a screw is somehow disconnected.

Update: It just needed a wiggle. Specifically I pushed the top cover towards the screen after popping all the retention clips on the back. I do have a bit of an issue where my new trackpad has weird and inconsistent clicking behaviour at the bottom... Not sure if the 3 button trackpad I bought has issues or if I mounted it into the top cover improperly... the 3 buttons and the trackpad work great, just not the slight springy click at the bottom of the trackpad, which honestly I don't even want, would prefer if this trackpad had no click to it and could just be tapped.

Ok, so uninstalling the old trackpad driver fixed the issue with the unreliable right and left click, but I cannot seem to install a functioning synaptics driver to give me the advanced windows options for things like gestures or scrolling... I did try the driver provided in the video description, perhaps it is not a genuine part...

@@MattTheriot I had that issue because I did not restart my computer, basically every installation and uninstallation requires a restart for further actions.

@@qiaojiezheng5310 In the end, I realized I had the Alps version of the trackpad, not the Synaptics version. I had to follow these instructions for Alps: forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=126860 In addition to editing the .inf to include the device ID, I had to use BCD edit commands to allow unsigned/unverified drivers: BCDEDIT /set nointegritychecks ON bcdedit -set loadoptions DISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS bcdedit -set TESTSIGNING ON Finally the driver was installed and working. As a final step I un-did the disable_integrity_checks and TestSigning bcd options, and I set a local group policy option to disable updating of the driver for that device ID. DO NOT get an Alps version of this trackpad unless you want to go through driver hell. Get the Synaptics version. That being said, ultimately it was a success and its 1000x better than the 'clunkpad' the W540 came with.
