What do the RED STARS on Edison Diamond Disc labels mean? This is a quick look at the origin of the Edison red star discs and what they mean to 78rpm (or in this case, 80rpm) record collectors.

So glad I found this channel! I certainly hope a younger generation continues this! My grandparents were born in the 1910s and 1920s. These were songs of their childhood. My generation and the younger generation who have had the privilege to speak to a centenarian are the last to speak to a living human being who were around during that time. We have to carry the torch .

Back in the 1970s a friend got me into a derekect farmhouse in Maine with lots of Edison diamond discs. His late uncle had been a traveling salesman for Edison and would leave records with buyers of machines "on approval". He would return periodically to collect for the records the customer wanted to keep, take back the others, and leave more on approval for next time. The red star records could not be returned.

First time watching. Very entertaining! The 78 rpm is my format of choice. I remember my parents collection of late 50's boleros from Puerto Rico and the doo wop 78s of the time. How fantastic these gems sounded! Srew digital! I want my music on 78 and played on a gorgeous 50's console hi fi with that deep jukebox sound. Magic!, i say! ❤❤❤

Firstly: Excellent channel. You did a great job explaining the stars. Most of mine are red. Have a couple purple and 1 green! Took me years to discover this info. I was so naive back in 1970, when I first collected, that I believed what a dealer told me that the D.D's. were the first disc records and that they were made from 1890's to about 1910. So your channel will help newer collectors from getting incorrect info.

I have never encountered a green star! Is it on an Irish themed disc?

I do not remember. While I have a bazillion of them I do not collect Vertical discs. So I do not maintain a catalogue of them. I do remember that it is an electric recording. Not a jazz, blues or good orchestra. If I can find it in my stacks of these I will let you know.

Before the information we have today, people made such wild guesstimates on records and machines. I once saw an article from the 1950s where this guy thought his Edison Standard was from 1882!😂

Had a lady once hand me a small stack of Diamond Discs. She said her great grandfather bought them right after the war. That would make sense,except for the fact that,she said the Civil War!

@@tedlawrence4189 technically the truth but not “right after” the civil war. I think player pianolas, music boxes and Mandolinas were already a thing.
