"Master of Puppets" is about drug abuse. There are allusions to heroin (sucking darkest clear / needlework away) and cocaine (chop your breakfast on a mirror). In the middle, the calls for the Master fade away as the drugs kick in, and on comes the mellow part as the user is experiencing the bliss of the drugs. Then slowly, the effects start to wear off, and the yearning for the drug becomes even greater. Most of the song is presented from the drug's point of view, how it's trying to lure you in. After the epic middle solo, the song switches to the user's point of view, asking where the dreams are that the drugs promised. needing its fix (Fix Me!). The drug then answers it's worth the sacrifice as it revels in snaring another victim (I will run through you, now I rule you too).

Welcome to the club young man. I was 16 years old when this album came out. I’m now 50. Back then we all thought the Master was drugs. And it was. But it can also be anything that takes control of your life.

If your drug addiction could talk this is what it would say.

I swear metal festivals are most fun of all the music genres...everyone is really inclusive and welcoming, its nothing like the metal community strereotype people imagine.

The first part of the song is the drugs perspective, the melodic part is actually taking it and the euphoria of taking it. The last part is the crash after it wears off.

"Deaths Construction" a phrase used in this song was also used in Black Sabbath's song "War Pigs" when talking about the evils of war. So I think Metallica was sort of giving a nod to Ozzy Osbourne and the band Black Sabbath with their use of that phrase.

So glad I was a teen & able to see these guys when they hit the scene. So much fun growing up in the 80s

I have a request that you listen to the song "One" by Metallica. But, in my opinion, if you want to get the better version of the video, DO NOT watch the official video, there are too many other things in it that take the focus off the song. One of the things that turned me onto Metal was that the songs were just deeper....these guys spoke of real things. Stuff that meant something to them. OK... so much to say... where to begin... The Song -------- The puppet master referred to in this song is cocaine. If you notice in the little phrase "chop your breakfast on a mirror" it's kind of a dead giveaway. Also, the song itself reflects the highs and lows of addiction. There are parts of the song that are very fast tempo, and those are the parts that somebody is wanting the drug. And then when they get the drug there are parts of the song that are very mellow - that goes along with that high you get from the drug. The Genre --------- Metal comes in an unbelievable number of subgenres. Metallica is the biggest metal band of all, and they are in the thrash metal or just plain heavy metal category - kind of the umbrella category. There are subcategories of every kind you can imagine. Doom, black, goth, industrial, speed, death, groove, symphonic, folk, and even pirate metal... and that's not even all of them! There's even EDM metal. Truly something for everyone. The Rules -------- Yep. There are rules when it comes to reacting to metal on KZfaq. 1. Whatever you do, NEVER pause during a solo - especially an epic solo, like a guitar or drum solo, or something of the like. Just don't ever do it. 2. Always wear headphones (earbuds are OK, too). I got this album/cassette the day it came out. So 34 years of hearing it and seen them 33 times live and I just now realized the two points of view in the lyrics. lol Every time you sit and listen you'll get a new take on their songs. Nice vid.

MEANING - so the song is about the use and addiction of drugs - spoken in the voice of the drug - 'come crawling faster and obey your master.'. The user is an addict and a slave to the drug's effects. The aggression at the onset is the feigning - the need for a hit. The line "chop your breakfast on a mirror" clearly refers to cocaine. The melodic part of the middle is the representation of the high-effect; it has a little psychadelic appeal to that interlude. But the effect isn't long lasting. The user then screams to the drug 'you promised only lies. 'all i hear or see is laughter.' Then he yells FIX ME - as the aggression returns, and the guitars wail, and builds back to the part of the drug ruling the addict but nothing can stop it even as it's killing him. A great anti-drug song if ever there was one. parents in the 80s were convinced metal was the devil's music. Metallica was telling us 'don't do drugs.'

It's funny you mentioned Triple H, he is a die-hard Metallica fan and has used songs like "For Whom the Bell Tolls," "Am I Savage?", "The Memory Remains" and others as part of his video packages for feuds and Wrestlemania entrances. I also attended Metallica's Big 4 concert at Yankee Stadium in 2011 and before they came onstage Triple H was on the stage being led to a side stage area to watch the show (with Stephanie McMahon) and he threw the DX "X" up in the air with his arms and the crowd cheered for him. It was pretty cool!

Welcome to the Metal Show brother! Too many just write it off as screaming and noise. But you will find metal songs usually have deep meanings. Its alot like rap in that regard in that it's has a deep message - just delivered in a different way. Compare to say pop which is mostly insipid and vapid expressions to make you want to dance and nothing more. Those songs get old and forgotten fast. Metal is very popular and found usually in younger years to help deal with our own aggression and steam and tension built up and it releases that stress in productive ways. I used to listen to Metallica (specifcally MotorBreath on Kill Em All album) before every high school football game I played. That was in the late 80s. That pumped me up like I could take on the world. Try listening to that while working out. So you like hard hitting songs - you can't go wrong with just about anything Metallica especially before 1992. Every song on Master of Puppets is a fantastic. One of the best - if not THE best metal albums of all time. definitely check out Disposable Heroes and Battery from that. Then Creeping Death from Ride the Lightning. check out a diff band Avenged Sevenfold - songs Nightmare, and Critical Acclaim. Other hard bass using bands - Tool and Korn. That all being said - you started with the cream of the crop - so there are alot of great songs in the metal library - but it will be hard to find something that tops Puppets.

Im a HUGE HDM fan. Grew up as a metal-head back in the 80s. Was a junior in high school when "Kill 'Em All" came out and have loved Metallica since. I started raving in 1990, back when all Electronic Music was under the umbrella of "Techno". I just rediscovered my love for electronic a few years ago. It's amazing just how much of an influence Hard Rock and Metal has in the HDM/EDM genre. Especially Hardcore and Raw. Both genres of music are awesome! Glad you are finding Metallica! The nice thing about metal in my opinion is, that it is such a diverse genre and cover so many different styles, there is something for almost everyone. From uplifting power-metal like Rhapsody and Blind Guardian, to dark and gloomy black metal like Burzum, metal about serious topics of war and religion like Megadeth to self-ironic Pirate-metal like Alestorm. Simple radio metal, complex prog-metal, short songs, extremely song songs (haha Sabazius goes brrr) ... there is everything
